Yeah that's him, here is his profile from the Hearts Official web site http://www.heartsfc.co.uk/thesquad/playerprofiles/austin_mccann.shtml
Re: Mccann to metros? The article also states that he has fallen out of the first team with his club Hearts. Why would we want this loser if he can't even play in the starting 11 for Hearts! Hey Nick/Bob - we really need strikers! We can look for a left back after we have some decent strikers!
Re: Re: Mccann to metros? Well 1) He come froma very professional league that is very competitive below the top two. 2) Many Scottish teams are hemorraging money so 'out of favor' may as well be code word for 'costs too much' (see John Spencer) 3) Mr Pope contribution to our team is really up in the air right now and we could really use the coverage. The fact Eddie went down in the last week and that this guy is Scttish lends credence to the #3. Mo using his connections to bring in someone on short notice.
Would McCann be our final senior international? If so, does that mean we'll use our allocation and salary cap on a US forward?
The authors of those two articles do work together, so I think it's effectively the same scoop. I'd completely blow it off, except for the fact that he didn't go to Spain. I don't really think McCann and Pope are related, though. Letting Edgar go, and filling out a solid back line, makes some sense. It doesn't get us another starting-quality striker, but it makes some sense.
I knew money played a role here. No way you give up a defender that young no matter how big a liability he is (see Glen Johnson). But.... 1) Didn't we just get a left back from Dallas (Bonseu). 2) This guys is short but will bring that high work rate style off play we see in Scotland. 3) I hope this guys is a TI 4) We still have no one to play wide on the left up front. I don't think Edgar was anywhere near as terrible as some people think he was last year but he might have to go to make room for this super secret striker we hear about. 5) Any news on this African kid we were trialing from Greece? Would he be a TI as well.
Bonseu is a centerback. Peter Ofori-Quaye is out of the picture, didnt make the trip to Spain. Good but not good enough for Bob.
Re: Re: Mccann to metros? How many Scottish matches have you seen that an Old Firm team isn't involved with . BTW being that he plays the same position as Hearts Captain/Scottish International Steve Pressley I wonder why he has a difficult time breaking into the starting 11 . Prior to his transfer to Hearts he was Airdie's captain ,, not bad for a 21 year old (at the time ) .
Re: Re: Re: Mccann to metros? Ed, have u ever seen him play? If u have, what do u think of him and do u think he could make it in MLS?
Re: Re: Re: Re: Mccann to metros? Sorry last time I saw Hearts live play it was against Dundee United in 1998 before he came to Hearts . I've been told by Airdie and Hearts supporters that he is a solid player and most likely be a decent Defender for the Metros ( not a star ) . They agree with me that his main hold back with Hearts is he plays the same position as "Elvis" . If he plays the normal "Scottish" game he should be fine . If the Metros really wanted a dominating Central Defender they should look into Lee Wilkie currently with Dundee .
1, McCann is a left back (not the same position as Pressley). 2, He genuinely has fallen out of favour, not for financial reasons. Hearts signed a versatile defender/midfielder in the Australian, Patrick Kisnorbo. They also have two right backs (Alan Maybury and Robbie Nielson) who can play left back. 3, McCann played very poorly in the derby match early this season. He has hardly played since then for their first team. 4, He is most famous for scoring the winning goal in a match v Celtic last season. He had a bit of a run in the team at the end of last season (nearly one year ago) because of injuries and kept his place for a while. 5, They are cutting the wage bill (like everyone else), and his contract expires in the summer, so since he is not a first team player, he will be released. http://edinburghnews.scotsman.com/sport.cfm?id=245412004 Main sports article in today's local paper: (my emphasis) I'm curious in that (ie surprised). He is a guy who has struggled to establish himself as an SPL-quality player over a few years now. He did show some promise at Airdrie and was picked up by Hearts (and has occaisonally shown good play there), but he is hardly outstanding. That is code for "we'll test the market in Britain, if no-one on a good level is interested, then we'll get back to the MetroStars". Don't expect anything immediate. http://www.soccerbase.com/footballlive/?MIval=players_details&playerid=11469 He has only started 35 league games for Hearts in over three years. 24 y/o. My own assessment of him is that he would be a good player on a weak SPL team (ie Partick) or a strong first division team (Inverness/Clyde). If he went to England I would expect him to sign with a second division side.
