Yes you'd have to look back to March 24 1993 since Italy won by a 5 goal margin in a WC qualifier against Malta!!!
    Definitely worth mentioning...

The Sisters of Mercy would have beaten New Zealand 3-1.

5 goal win= morale booster... plus even though we beat up on a really bad squad the monkey on their backs (not scoring goals) was lifted. Morale and faith in your team plays a big part in chemistry.

even though it was a great win with some nice goals; cassano and pirlo....a team like italy should have more games like this.....the thing i liked about this match which i hope it continues for every game from now on is that they never took their foot of the pedal, they kept going for scoring even til 90th min....in todays football u cant give up and think u won, one goal changes everything and teams make comebacks

The Faroe Islands are soft competition, no doubt, but Italy are rarely as aggressive and fluent as they were on Tuesday, and generally happy to close the shop at 1-0 or 2-0. Also, keep in mind under Donadoni we played the Faroes twice and not nearly as well. So it was a morale booster, yes, but also something of a statement of intent by Prandelli and this new group of players.

Italy 6 - 1 Malta by the WC 94 Qualifiers, right?

That was what came to mind as soon as the match against Faroe Islands was over. And yep, it's been a long time.

That is correct...and Cesare Prandelli tactically reminds me of Arrigo Sacchi who was not afraid to keep trying new lineups and was eventually very unlucky to lose to Brasil in 94...

Unlucky to lose? no way. Brasil dominated the match from start to finish we were lucky it even went to pk's. Romario missed a sitter.

Italy's defense was wrecked by suspensions and injuries too (if memory serves) and Roby Baggio was playing hurt.

brasil had at least 10 more shots on goal than us. I recall the game very well. Maybe you should ask yourself what game you watched.

Not too long ago and we were all talking about how bad 2010 was going to be remembered, what with the terrible WC performance and all. Now... We can also remember it as a year when Italy won by a five goal margin after a long, long time.

Not to to mention it is still possible for the Azzurri to finish the year in a very confortable position on their Euro 2012 Qualifying group.
