Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 As a big fan of the "careful what you ask for" situation and a NoVa resident, I chuckle everytime I try to navigate Route 1 near the old Potomac Yards past the mega strip mall, the new residential construction and the inevitable widening of Route 1 that must occur. Remember the Del Ray folks who complained that a new football stadium would destroy the character of the area? How do you folks like it now? Trading about 12 weekends a year of gridlock for year-round permanent overdevelopment and daily traffic gridlock.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 I do too. Instead of awful traffic 8-10 times a year the citizens of Alexandria now get it daily!
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 I highly doubt that they would confirm it anyway, so the tweet doesn't really mean that much to me.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Amen - from another Orlando-DCU fan! And although this is not the appropriate forum, let me say that having met Donner (Dillon was there also) at the US-Brazil watch party, I now have ZERO hope in us getting a team here! Nothing about either of them says success OR money!
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 To be followed by another round of economics professors from two-bit colleges being quoted as proving that sports stadiums have negative ecomomic impact.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 That's made even better by the strip mall always having been a placeholder for future development. It just happened that the shopping center did even better than the developers originally thought. Meanwhile, FedEx has been a placeholder for future retail and commercial development in Landover while more residential has been built.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 But that future development is not going to generate the same level of road traffic. Yes, it'll be higher density; but people don't come and go from their condos hourly.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Has DCU looked at south arlington at all? There is some land to be had near shirlington...
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 As if you can believer everything on Tweeter? . . .Twitter? At least the Internet has Wikipedia and is totally reliable.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Well, if it's the head of communications for the team saying there is no announcement, I'd believe him. Else, when there is an announcement, he might as well drop his twitter account if he's just going to be using it to pass along lies to the public. Thx, Jay!
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Director of Marketing Communications. Whatever. If he's lying to fans it's his and the teams credibility at stake. Thx, Jay!
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Why? If he says that there is an announcement, then he'd get in trouble for releasing info too soon. The only option he has is plausible deniability. Except for BigSoccer posters, most of the general public is unaware that there is even a rumor. Why would Sheldon put the DCU organization in a position where it would have to deliver something "major"?
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 If he says nothing at all, then he has nothing on the record. A team official who interacts with fans as part of his job is on the record as saying there is no pending "major announcement". When such announcement occurs, you will never be able to trust information he gives out in his position as a communications executive. If the "major" part turns out to be relatively "minor" we should still cast doubts on the communications issued by that official. It's lose/lose now that he's on the record (add a third lose for us if there is no announcement at all). Thx, Jay!
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Why does that bother you? It's the truth. Even if a sports team were willing to pay for everything involved with a stadium, it would be much harder to do it in VA than it would be in either DC or Maryland. Add in any funding component (even for infrastructure) and VA falls off the table.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 splitting c*nt hairs IMHO comparing the difficulty of getting anything done in Northern Virginia vs DC. For sheezy.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 And has to face the baying of lunatics because he hasn't said anything.
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Arlington/Alexandria = NIMBYville USA (remember the unsuccessful Potomac Yards stadium proposal for the Redskins, already noted in some posts on this thread); there's about as much chance of United getting a stadium in that area as there is of Estonia winning Euro 2012. (I'd love it myself - I reside in South Arlington - but it's just not on.)
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 No, but you can believe 99.99% of it, because 99.99% of it is random disconnected personal trivia like "I just dropped my pencil" and "I'm going to sit down now" and "corn flakes are good" and what reason is there to lie about shit like that?
Re: Major Announcement on 9/13 Well, you might be afraid of the stigma that'd be attached to you if you declared you didn't like corn flakes.
