The Lunatic Express: Discovering the World . . . via Its Most Dangerous Buses, Boats, Trains, and Planes by Carl Hoffman
Real quick, would anyone agree with this list and that A Game of Thrones is the best fantasy novel ever?
Interestingly enough, I love Tolkien (especially The Silmarillion), but I have no time for the rest of the genre.
Fantasy is not a genre I've read a lot of, so perhaps I'm not entirely qualified. But I thought A Game of Thrones was just "pretty good". There were some good characters and some good battles, but the book also engaged in needlessly pornographic scenes involving a 13-year-old (I'm no prude, but some things just seem entirely gratuitous). I will probably read the next novel in the series eventually. But right now I'm reading Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind (#3 on this list) and I like it better than the Martin book. I also enjoyed The Lord of the Rings better than the Martin.
I personally haven't read it but after reading the Top 25 on that website I was curious what some of you thought. Probably not for me thanks. PS Tolkien is still the king. Did you like the expanded Children of Hurin?
I have to admit, with all the Lost Tales type books, I've read so many versions of that tale that they all blur together after awhile. Same for Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin.
This Song is You Just downloaded to my iPod (thanks to monster's recommendation) and will be reading it during my 6 hour layover in ATL tomorrow morning. It'll be the first time I'll be reading a Kindle book for longer than an hour or two in one sitting. We'll see how it works out.
Killing Pablo, by Mark Bowden. I actually listened to this as an audiobook. My first audiobook ever, in fact. I really enjoyed listening to it-- a pretty great procedural yarn. It would make a good movie-- which it supposedly is going to be soon. The author makes the point that while untold millions were being spent to kill Pablo Escobar, cocaine imports to the US from Colombia just grew more and more.
Finished a few more Discworld novels Guards, Guards, Sourcery, The Color of Magi, and The Light Fantastic. Now I am reading: Tyrannosaur Canyon by Douglas Preston. It is pretty good so far.
I'm about half way through it and would definitely recommend it if you're obsessive about music. I like it enough that when I finish it, I plan on picking up his newest book, Talking to Girls About Duran Duran.
Yeah. It's mostly a memoir about his relationship with his late wife (she died at age 30) told through the mixtapes they made for each other. It's about all sorts of 80s music actually. I think that just made for a catchy title.
Awesome, another on my "To Read" list. Should keep me busy for a while. Currently reading: Dexter is Delicious by Jeff Lindsay (aka Jeffry P. Freundlich) It's the fifth book in the series and so far it's a step up from the last two books, which weren't nearly as well-written or thought out as the second book, Dearly Devoted Dexter.
