Potential sites and times for US Open Cup final determined http://thecup.us/potential-sites-fo...-field-rfk-stadium-and-the-home-depot-center/
This time around more Americans paid attention and united the nation following the WC in record numbers on ESPN.
"round the world" is a bit egocentric of us, no doubt, but we Americans seem to do that alot. Getting back to the main point, it isn't the first time we have made the group stage - in fact, in 2002, we made it one step further to the quarterfinals. However, this time we had a critical mass of viewership and the drama in that goal simply cannot be unmatched. It's all about the drama.
Plus, the first time the U.S. won the group. But, I thought Caligiuri's goal that put the U.S. into Italia '90 was the 'shot heard round the world'. First time the team qualified for the finals in how many years?
1930 = SF. Won group (No intermediate stages). 1994 = 16. Finished 3rd in group, made 16's. Lost to Brazil 1-0 + vicious elbow to Ramos. 2002 = QF. 2010 = 16's. I'd say McBride's goal vs. Portugal (or any from that game) were the real shots heard round the world. Or Wynalda's in 1994. Or Caliguiri's to qualify in 1989.

Fcuk Simon Borg, he took a fake quote and ran with it to produce another piece of crap against the Crew. How does this guy working for MLS able to have a vendetta against one of it's teams? It's the fourth thing on MLSsoccer.com this week sucking CONCACAF's cock and saying the Crew are idiots for seeing any problem with this screw job.
I say THAT one was the one heard around the US, not Donovan. Donovan's goal was heard around the world because it shook up the World Cup and everyone saw the United States celebrate a goal like no other in this country's soccer history. Caliguiri's goal was not in the World Cup. It was in qualifying, and it was in Trinidad. I'm sure not many people around the world were watching outside of the US or have even heard of that goal.

Its called "OVER marketing" These idiots are finally coming up to speed where the rest of have been since the 1994 World Cup and suddenly its heard around the world, brought to you by the idiots who call the MLB winner the "World Champs" and NBA winners 'WORLD CHAMPS" Same morons different sport.
Show me a basketball team anywhere else in the world that could beat the Lakers. Should me a baseball team anywhere else in the world that could beat the Yankees. Oh, you can't? That's what I thought.
Simon Borg is only linking in an article written by Daniel Prat Jerez. The most interesting bit from the article is: "Yo no ví la que me dieron, sólo me la puse." Apparently he didn't realize nor was told that the shirt had no number, which probably explains why he turned around on the field, because that is probably when he found out. The article claims Renteria said the referee had good reason to deny the goal, and blames the fourth official for allowing him on: "El árbitro tuvo razón en anular el gol y sacarme amarilla, pero la culpa es del cuarto árbitro que me dejó entrar así." However, Shawn Mitchell reports "I never said that," Renteria said through a translator. "The referees made a mistake. He can't disallow a goal. I said 'why is the referee calling it off?' He couldn't disallow the goal because he called for it. I never said the ref was right for disallowing the goal. It's not right. He made a mistake. He called for the goal. He can't call the goal back."
Does have to be a legal beating. If not i can think of North Korea, China, Mexico, Iran, Congo. Thats on there home turf and not following certain rules.
the nba is supposedly going to play in the new World Club Championship in 2011 which they haven't had since the McDonald's championship which the NBA won all nine years of its existence with mostly reserves/people on trial and sending teams that weren't even the champions. It was canceled because the NBA won every year while taking it as a joke. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/McDonald's_Championship Not to mention its "offcially" called the NBA Finals and not the NBA Word Championship Series anymore. (since 1986 actually) I guess an MLB team could play against the winner of the Japanese league, but i highly doubt that much poorer japanese teams with 4 foreign player limit could compete against the MLB teams that have larger budgets and can draw talent from around the globe without any sort of restrictions. The World Series existed before other countries had professional leagues so it technically was the "world series" when it started. (the first was in 1903) off topic but the constant bitching about the use of world champions in the nba/mlb as a way to complain about American sports psyche is old, played out, and slightly misinformed.
Even the Milwaukee Bucks won the tournament! LMAO!!! So the Milwaukee Bucks at one point were considered the "World Champions?" (LOL)
As I recall, the McDonald's champion was never formally called 'World Champion', but the tournament was the proxy for that, and was supposed to grow into one. But it was too uncompetitive. The NBA was, as pointed out, sending non-champions, who were in preseason and playing bench players, and still won.
In games that count, not friendlies/exhibitions? Olympiakos, from the Greek league, to name one. Last year's Japan league winner, to name one.
Nope. Olympiakos can't even compete with NBA teams in pre-season mode playing a bunch of backups. I seriously doubt the Yomiuri Giants would be able to compete with the Yankees.
And you seem to know this... how? Where's the evidence? "You seriously doubt" ? And you would be wrong. Dead wrong. I guess the bottom line is, can you or anyone else prove it?
As funny as the US Dream Team losing to foreign teams and ending up in 4th place? I'm sure that was deemed impossible back then... right?
