Sorry, didn't know exactly where I should post this, but I want to know your opinion (I'm sure some of you have some experience with these groups) on which is the better major American Supporters Group to join and why. I want to join one today and hopefully get discounted tickets with one of these groups for the USA v. Brazil match in August....

Soooo.... Sam's Army vs. American Outlaws... Who should I join and why?

    Thanks in advance. :)

I'm saying this as a non-member of either organization: AO seems to have more energy/momentum right now. I haven't seen any official communications/actions from Sam's Army in a LONG time. If I didn't know any better, I'd say they've pretty much discontinued as a formal organization and now just exist as a collective of un-affiliated USA fans.

Either way - all groups seem to mob up together for home games.

American Outlaws seems to be the only active USMNT supporters group right now. The media frequently calls the American Outlaws Sams Army. The Outlaws are a great organization but really each chapter is different. That said during gametime everybody is together.

yup, exactly. I still consider myself a member of Sam's Army, and so does my entire group, but once the whistle blows everyone is doing the exact same thing.

I love your avatar pic, Nino, thats actually my BAF in the picture.

Thanks alot for the answers, everyone... American Outlaws it is. I'm looking forward to joining them at games. My friends and I belong with them, as we are rabid soccer fans that love to stand, sing and chant the entire game. We went to the our first USA in CT when they played Czech Rep. before the World Cup, and we had like Second row seats, and assholes behind us were yelling at us because we were standing up and yelling too much. I told them, "if you don't want to stand up for your country, you should be at home on your couch". We were pissed, but now we know where we need to be.

Thanks guys, I have another question though: Are AO Chapters binding? because I'm not sure if I want to join Hartford's or New York's... does it have any really binding effect, or can I just as easily be apart of any AO event in the country?

Thanks alot, I loved the picture, thought it would be a perfect Avatar for this world cup. I assume BAF stands for "big American Flag", if not please correct me, but that's awesome man, small world.

I wasn't sure how bit AO was since all I ever hear about is Sam's Army, but now I know the former is the more active one. Even when I join AO, I will still consider myself a member of Sam's Army as well. We are all brothers under this great Red, White and Blue banner anyways. ;)

Personally I am AO till I die. AO has chapters in almost every major city. Each chapter organizes their own pub crawls, happy hours, viewing parties and now a bus trip to the Brazil game. At least that is what we have done here in Hartford. AO National helps with monetary support and also sends us free merchandise from our sponsors.

    Check out our site:
    Hartford.TheAmericanOutlaws.com

I have also gained new friends who also living in the area. It's been a great time since I joined last year. I think it's a fact that AO is a younger group in age and members.

We drink and sing with Sam's Army at games but not sure what else their members do together.

simply put - AO is a brotherhood

Everyone (AO Members and Non-AO Members) is welcome to any AO chapters events. CT has Hartford as their official chapter but we are working on getting an official chapter in New Haven/Bridgeport.

I would pick the closest chapter to where you live.

    Thanks

    American Outlaws.

They're much more up to date with their ticket sales/merchandise/ticketing. The tailgates with AO are an absolute blast, and I can honestly say I've never met somebody involved in the organization that I don't like. Sam's Army is great and all, but if your looking for the cutting edge future of American Soccer Support, the American Outlaws is the way to do it.

If you want to fund someone's trip to South Africa on your dime, feel free to join that supporter's group.

I'd rather not have my membership dues spent that way, to be fair.

I feel sorry for you. Do you see any negativity from any of the other posts. I read this same comment in another site and I'm sure it's from the same guy. I hope everyone who reads this ignores it because I rather this stay about which supporters group does the most for it's members. Not about restarting an AO vs SA rift.

Not to comment on positive vs negative spin, but metroflip has been around a very long time and has been at the forefront of supporters activities. I would not blow off his opinion out of hand.

I support all soccer fans and people who advance the sport. But you hit the nail on the head, he's been around a long time. I'm sure that AO's increasing media attention and popularity has some people feeling like their losing their control of the fanbase. I can tell you that the leaders of AO did go to South Africa (and additional 48 AO people) but paid for it out of their pocket. Spreading lies is not an opinion.

Bridgeport's almost done, I heard from another poster. I'm from/live in bridgeport, and like 10 (or more) of my friends/relatives are from the area that will probably join once I get verification of the existence of this currently unofficial chapter. I'm fairly certain that, once my boys all join this AO chapter, it will be official. Very much looking forward to this, this is were we belong, I was in brennan's in bridgegport leading the bar in song singing "Your a Grand Old Flag" after the Algeria game, wearing my "The Yanks Are Coming' Shirt and Uncle Sam hat, signed by Alexi Lalas. It was beautiful.

I've have scarcely been as excited to officially be a part of something in my life. I've already paid my AO membership dues lastnight. We're about to take this to the next level.

WITH THAT SAID, PLEASE GIVE ME ANY CONTACT INFO THAT MAY BE USEFUL IN REACHING THE LEADERS/MEMBERS OF BRIDGEPORT'S UNOFFICIAL CHAPTER, SO I MAY PROMPTLY ALERT THEM OF THE iINFLUX OF QUALITY MEMBERS I WILL BE RECRUITING. THANK YOU, SEND IT IN A PRIVATE MESSAGE IF YOU CAN.

I think if part of my measly $18 helps American fans travel and organize to support our Team in the most important sports event the world, I will not complain. And, maybe one day I will be in that number. There's probably no more worthy of a cause to put that money towards.

Glory to these United States while this Planet still spins, and the Sun stays burning. And thereafter.

    SA v. AO

For all the fun I had in SA, it just wasn't the same without Flip leading the ruckus in the Cat III section. He was truly missed. I hope he's in our midst in Brazil!

I'm curious about this statement as well. Metroflip, what's the story here? You can't throw out an accusation like that and not back it up.

I am loyal Sams Army, but appreciate AO because it will push Sams Army(and maybe other groups) to do better. If you are threatened by competition than a group should step up their game. Sams army started it all so you can't bash them that much. However, as of late, they have not done as much(from the outside looking in), AO is the in thing right now. Shame on them if the claims are true about using money. Either way, more american fan groups equals great for our team. As many have said, we are all on the same team when the whistle blows.

I love how you pigeon hole AO members as Frat boys.
Maybe you had an experience with the boys from Nebraska, but
AO NYC isn't like that...nor alot of other chapters I suspect.

Welcome to The American Outlaws, we'll be in touch with you to finalize your request for the Bridgeport Chapter.

AO Hartford only has 4 seats left on our party bus trip to the Brazil game.

    Email AOHartford@gmail.com for info

    Thanks again Nino!

I'm happy this post was created to signup new members for The American Outlaws. Perfect example of where the two supporters groups are heading and why!

    Re: SA v. AO

Someone who was in South Africa heard that as a 'rumor' going around.
I have no clue if it is true or not.

I just hope that if it is true, the information was disclosed to AO Members.

I am not a dues paying member to either organization and one of the main reasons why was that I was never 100% sure where the money was going to.

A rumor based on what? This is purely based on paranoia and speculation

My $18.99 a year is probably the best $18.99 I'll spend... The shirt and bandana; not to mention AO is the only supporters group that actually hosts tailgates, bar parties, and pre/post game partys for games.

One thing I'd like to see AO do is have a American Outlaw Convention every year at a different city... get all the AO's together at a hotel and hold some meetings and party
