In South America, Uruguay is always considered a big team and their history is a major psychological factor. For instance, Uruguay and Argentina have won 14 Copa America championships. Brazil has only won 8. No other teams are even close. Even looking at the past few Copa Americas, they have made the semifinals in the past 4 editions.

Further, when you look at their players, most of them play in top European leagues and in good teams. And they have done so for many years.

It's probably more of a surprise that Uruguay do not regularly pull off good runs in the World Cup.

we won over romania, and it was a very good romanian side with Hagi. Romania had defeated argentina earlier.

with all respect, you probably didn't watch the Ghana-Uruguay game to say that the win over Ghana was due to luck. The game was pretty much one-sided on the referee side all night long. I'm not only talking about the dive that conceded the last FK to Ghana but the Ghananians fouled Uruguay the entire game with the referee's permission. Check the stats at the end of the first half and yet only Fucile had a yellow card that prevented him from playing the semis.

It was clear Uruguay wasn't supposed to pass the series. It was almost divine justice Uruguay actually made it through.

Gentlemen, since when, Footballs wins are decided by ball possessions or by shots at goal ?

Goals my friend, only more goals than the other team decides who wins or not. pk goals are in fact, goals too. Who makes more, wins. It is simple.

here is test question for a 7 year old Football fan-player :

Team A has 1 % of ball possession, no shots on the other goal, but manages to finish the game without any goals against, while team B, has 99 % of ball possession, and has 1.593 shots on the other goal (you can put the number that you wish here, it doesn`t matter), but none achieved, and the goal keeper in team B, by mistake makes the ball bounce inside its own goal zone.

    Who won ?

    :p

It may not be fair, but that`s how this game is.

I' ve never said that, and you are right a winner is not decided by ball possessions or by shots at goal. Just wanted to show that Uruguay, a which I've gain respect for (thanks Forlan) , despite Suarez handball, didn't dominate the match as some pointed out and did not necessarily deserved to win.

If Uruguay hadn`t won that match, it wouldn`t have played semifinals and wouldn`t have achieved a well deserved Fourth place. Get over it, this whole WC now is history, c`mon ;) Uruguay scored and the other team didn`t know how to, when they should have.

I wonder when are people going to understand that Football isn`t a game about deserving, but achieving. Its not about preparing a test, where you study and after that you studied thoroughly everything you needed to study, according to all the effort you put in it, you receive the well deserved qualifications......, abalones,....you may have not studied a single word or even you may not even know how to read, but if you score and the opponent doesn`t,..... you win.:p

Sure it was due to Suarez's hand that Uruguay got through, however, I don't think they're a bad team at all. The fact that almost everyone was against Uruguay after their match against Ghana is quite unfair. It was only Suarez who did that, not the whole team. And he got punished. Ghana got their chance. They failed. They couldn't win the penalties. Uruguay won. Then it's done. What more do you expect?
Especially after their match against Germany, I'm even more positive that they're truly a good team. They fought courageously & didn't give up. And Diego Forlan, what an amazing player he is!

Seriously,.. do I need to reply to jogger? please don't show me match reports, they are meaningless - watch the game again.

The double standard on Suarez is mind-boggling... Kewell did the same thing against Ghana, the guy scores the penalty and no one is making a big deal. This is a play I've seen many times. Cheating is what the German GK did when he pulled the ball out from inside his goal and ran up to the box clearly trying to deceive the referee. He later confirmed he had cheated.

This is about praising the team Uruguay which was right there with the best. I just can't understand how people mistakenly keep bringing up the Suarez thing. Maybe is due to an utter lack of understanding of the game of football.

Speaking as a most casual fan, the 3rd place match was the most entertaining I watched in the tournament. We felt bad for the Uruguay keeper - and what a bittersweet end to the match....Forlan's final kick going in would have been brilliant!

I think what saved Uruguay.......(to the naysayers i mean), were the 2 performances vs. Holland and Germany.
It was just brilliant and bravery that very few teams showed vs. Holland and especially Germany.

I have a friend from Ghana and he was so bitter with hate , that he said he needed Uruguay to lose 5-0 each game in order to sleep again. Instead, he actually called me and told me he had to take his hat off to Uruguay for what they had done.
He seems to have come in terms with the Suarez thing. His reason is interesting. Apparently Suarez could have just headed it away. To use his hand was basically giving Ghana the game on a platter.

Honestly, I was watching the game and when Suarez handed the ball I thought these guys are gone. They lost. Because most of the time, a play like that in the last minute with a penalty means you lose - I didn't believe Gyan was going to miss so for all purposes, you could argue people were upset with Suarez for just handing the ball (I mean Uruguayans). Then when Gyan missed, it was a totally different situation.

Having said that, I thought the linesman conceding the FK that initiated the play was just flat out robbery. IMHO. Ghana had to qualify.

You heard the man. A sober and accurate statement.

Pará pará pará sacale una foto se van para baviera con el culo rrroto! xD
What is clear is that you see letters and words but dont read, lets read the man:

Uruguay did fairly good (beat england cof) at wc U20 2009,argentina didnt even qualify,in the southamerican they finished in last place (6) with no victories, uruguay 3rd and to some point fought for the title. Name one uruguayan player from that generation>lodeiro (made it to major wc,name an argentine one..errr... well things like that,i expect arrgentina to make a worse 2014 world cup than this last one.

any insight about the absence of cristian rodriguez from the NT for the WC - i know he was suspended for the first 2 WC group games but could have been vital in the knockout rounds especially against holland and germany.

just wondering if there was personality issues or locker room issues with him.

    appreciate the feedback
