Yeah I'm okay with this status, at least for now. They definitely deserved "Best Moment" and Carlos and Landon kept the speeches short and classy. Congrats to them.
Well that's one award down... I don't think they will give us both awards though. The Under Pressure Award I think will go to Crosby's goal in the Canada-USA gold medal game.
Guys, you have to realize the super bowl wasn't on espn the olympics weren't on espn the masters wasn't on cbs for much of it the world cup was on ESPN/ABC for all of it. the first award was a gimme, espn will find a way to pimp "their" events.
WHOA. did not see that coming at all... Was this voted on by fans?? If it was, totally shocked that it beat the Saints winning the Super Bowl! but maybe ESPN just wanted to get something out of all they put into the World Cup
it was "voted on by the fans" (i.e., espn decided anyway, but they make the fans feel like they had some input) still, I personally believe we should have won that award, and i'm glad we did.
I'm sure that ESPN has latched onto Donovan and will be using him as the first legitimately recognizable soccer star. (Lalas doesn't count because he was recognizable because of his hair and his guitar, not his playing). Saying that, Donovan has been on literally every talk show imaginable, and ESPN has no say in that. I think it's also important to note that in the opening monologue when Landon Donovan was mentioned by Seth Meyers, he got the loudest cheer. Yeah, the World Cup is fresh in everyone's minds, but that is still significant.
I'm pleasantly surprised, but I fully agree. All those games were nailbiters, but the Algeria match and goal was on a total other level. One of the best moments I've had following US soccer.
I love the US team and all, but the Algeria game topping a New Orleans Super Bowl win? Not even close.
No but seriously. As someone whose family is from that area and has two teams--the Saints and the Nats-- I can't even describe to you how much a championship meant to that city. It's unexplainable.
problem is, its new orleans vs. all the rest of usa. easy call you also have to refer to my earlier post, the usa team was the only one shown on espn...it was an easy win since espn promotes their own events. further, who cares about the saints? ... pretty much the saints fanbase plus a few. not me, thats for sure. your bias comes through having family from there. not that it wasn't special, but when you look at the rest of the WORLD voting, the rest of the usa will probably go with the usa team, and the rest of the world will probably go with soccer.
haha YES! It really was....there is a Super Bowl every year. The US winning their group in a World Cup hasn't happened since 1930(?) and the way they won it was something I will never forget.
3 ESPY's, his ex-wife at his side, and no baby for Landon. It's a shutout! http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b190462_landon_donovan_i_dont_have_love_child.html
And I can't describe to you how much that goal meant for this country and soccer in this country end of discussion...Just look at the tv ratings such a huge step
Exactly! Think of it this way, New Orleans vs the USA... this was a moment for the whole country! not just a part of the country...
Are you kidding me? Where was Donovan, Dempsey, Howard, Bradley, etc. for the Best Male Athlete Award? And where was the US soccer team in the Best Team Award? We were robbed again, this time by ESPN from awards we deserved...we will clearly never develop into a soccer nation until we start receiving some respect.
