Funny how people went from how Argentina sucked and won't even qualify to praises to Argies the favorite to whatever it is now. Duh.

All I can think of: For the first time, Messi is playing well on a general basis for the national team. Now there's a need to figure out the rest. This could be a good thing.

As for WC 2010 - If Germany lose the next game, then what? Or Holland, or Spain? What if Uruguay win it all?

At Italia '90, Italy the favorite went almost 600 minutes without allowing a single goal (WC record). They ended up in 3rd place.

    Haha!

Honestly though, I don't even think winning the lottery would make me happy today.

    Maybe tomorrow.

I discounted Maradon primarily because I followed the CONMEBOL Qualifiers very closely and Argentina was all over the place...in the end, it came down to a single goal minutes before the match was over in Buenos Aires against bottom of the table Peru for the to qualify.

I admit that they had looked like they were getting their shit together little by little coming up to the WC. Especially after totally outplaying Germany in March in Munich - my wife and I were actually at that match and I was embarrassed but the way we (Germany) played.

That said, I thought Billardo, his assistant and former Argie WC winner as a manager in 86, would have done a better job with tactics.

    My opinion.

Sorry...hope you have a better day tomorrow! :(

After the Copa America in 2007 Argentina and Messi fire were gone. Ruined by coaching disasters. The midas touch of Pekermen lasted one year, and then the poison started flickering in.

This Argentina team should have been much stronger this world cup, because the last world cup we were a young team. The only reason the age increased was because the clown of our coach, brought useless old players or older players who he relied on and the never used when we thought he was going to use them.

Argentina once ranked number 1 in the world a few years ago, Argentina once that went over 25 or so games undefeated in the early 90's or so, those days ....

All I know since Diego has touched the team from 1990 on, he's ruined vaporized everything.

    _______________

Right, Argentina doesn't need an international coach, no one gets Argentine football. I use to think, up until, recently that maybe an international coach is good. Argentina need an excellent home grown coach that understands Argentinian football and all that can translate in the field.

Some argentinians were my favourite players growing up.

Especially Ariel Ortega for his skill on the ball. Batistuta was a favourite as well for deceptive skill and finishing.

More recently, Riquelme - for pretty much everything!

I have to say it (and believe me this is no flame)... Argentina is slowly turning into Uruguay in soccer terms... Uruguay has wondered in the world cup wilderness for decades, and it seems Argentina has become just that... 20 years and counting.

Unfair comparison since Uruguay haven't wont, what is it 1937? Plus the amount of talent that Argentina gives to other teams as "nationals", uruguay doesn't come close. Brazil went for 24 years without a world cup. Germany has gone for 20 years without one. Unlike Uruguay, Argentina have always been a constant danger,

Uruguay always barely making it through. Argentina had a tough qualification round, Uruguay's chances were far better this world cup with their hex group.

Spain have never won a world cup. Netherlands have never been to the final since 1978.

Only 4 teams have dominated the last 25 years.

Blame for this elimination fall squarely on Diego's lap. There are many to blame, but he is the main culprit

It was him who put and umbalanced team, selecting players like Garce and others who were useless.
It was him who decided to drop Zanetti, Cambiasso, Dalessandro, etc.
It was him who decided to pick up Veron to play, when everybody knows that Veron is already past his prime and broken.
It was him who decided to play with 3 attackers and leave the midfield unprotected.
It was him who keep trying with Messi and Dimaria, when it was cristal clear that Messi and Dimaria were not delivering and it was necessary to look for alternatives

Another brilliant argentinian generation of top players ruined by a joke of a coach. Messi at least is still young and can look forward to 2014 ...but for many others this was the farewell ... they deserved better :(

I hope the next coach for Argentina will be a real professional, not another amateur guy who thinks that he can win just by showing the flag and shouting "vamos, vamos, Argentina!!" :D

And I hope we have seen now the end of the "Sidieguismo" (Yesdieguism) .... Maradona was a great player, and sure gave the WC86 to Argentina, but that's it ... it is not justification to let him run amok now destroying Argentina's chances to win a new WC ... I am persuaded that with other coach Argentina would make it to the finals

That's a bit drastic. I think Argentina will qualify for every world cup unlike Uruaguay who have missed quite few in the last 20 years.

But yes they do lack players with strong mentalities. They need better midfielders, their strikers are more than fine. Riquelme would have helped them out a lot in this world cup.

Anyone thought that maybe, just maybe the players let their coach down? The man went to 2 finals and got a medal to show. Wtf do these players have? Wtf does the rest of Argentina have over this man?

Today Diego played with five attacking players.

Count them: FIVE. Maxi, Di Maria, Tevez, Messi and Higuain.

And four center backs. Otamendi, Burdisso, Micho and Heinze.

Now, tell me, what is missing?

Holding mids. Someone to connect the four center backs with the forwards, to keep the pressure on Germany.

Don't take me wrong, I do like Diego, he tried to stay true to the essence of futbol argentino, but man, today for the most attacking rival he chose the formation with the least chance to defend successfully in case the attack failed and there was a turnover.

He may yet learn, but the way he played today was a big mistake. He needed Veron and Jonas today. He needed Samuel. He had someone to try with Messi: Pastore.

But no. He didn't select the players who had said they were not too happy with him. At least according to the press, Veron, Samuel and Jonas were unhappy with their roles:

    http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2890...or-argentina-players-unhappy-at-lack-of-pitch-

so maybe there is another story behind this 4-0. That's what happens to a team with internal fights.

He's got Schweini and Khedira. That's twice as many. And Özil was played as an AM, so that's three in the center for holding and recovering.

Maradona played DiMaria and Maxi as wingers, plus three forwards. Only one man was in the center: Masche. Too little.

I'll never forget the first World Cup I ever really cared about, Mexico 1986, when I watched all the games in my favorite local Gasthaus in Traben-Trarbach West Germany.

And when Burruchaga put Argentina ahead 3-2 in the 85th minute, after watching Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Rudi Voeller come back to equalize, I thought I would die.

I've hated, but also respected, Argentina ever since. More hate than respect, but I still feel a lot of pain about that '86 World Cup. Germany was so so so so close, but it was simply not to be.

Still hurts, and it's what, nearly 30 years later.
