The only problem Mr. Watson had while he was here was a complete and total inability to hold off any defender...his lightweight challenging left his easy prey for being ridden out of every tackle he went in to. If he has beefed and strengthened up without losing his speed, he has a chance of getting back into the league.
Just checked the current 2010 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup wikipedia page. It looks like a number of ex-RSL players have scored goals so far in the tournament, and quite a few are still alive in the tournament. Jamie Watson - Austin Aztex (D2 Pro) - 2 goals - both on June 15, First Round vs. (Dallas-Fort Worth) DFW Tornadoes (PDL) - next match @ Chivas USA on June 29, 3rd Round Joey Worthen - Austin Aztex - 1 goal - also vs. DFW Tornadoes (the 2 ex-RSL'ers combined for all 3 Austin goals) Nicolas Besagno - Kitsap Pumas (PDL) - 0 or 1 goal??? - Listed as a goal scorer on the wikipedia page, but match summaries only credit him with a yellow card in both First and Second Round matches - eliminated in Second Round vs. Portland Timbers Alex Nimo - Portland Timbers (D2 Pro) - 1 goal - June 15, First Round vs. Sonoma County Sol (USASA) - second half goal was the first and game winner in a 3-0 victory - next match vs. Seattle Sounders on June 29, 3rd round Tino Nunez - Rochester Rhinos (D2 Pro) - 1 goal - June 15, First Round vs. Dayton Dutch Lions (PDL) - early goal was first and game winner in a 2-0 victory - next match @ Columbus Crew on June 29, 3rd round Abe Thompson - Miami FC (D2 Pro) - 1 goal - June 22, Second Round vs. FC Tampa Bay (D2 Pro) - extra time penalty kick was game winner in a 2-1 A.E.T. victory - next match @ Houston Dynamo on June 29, 3rd round (OK, I know Abe never saw a single match with RSL - never even made it through pre-season camp. But he was signed on with the team for a few months of the off season)
I was watching TV this past Sunday and pretty much nothing was on (during the time that no soccer was on) so I was channel surfing. I landed on "America's Got Talent" for the Portland show. While watching a strage act the camera cut out to a shot of the audience and zoomed in on a couple. I was thinking "that guy looks really familiar, but why?" and then it hit me... Ian Joy. They then showed him and some girl a couple more times throughout the show. I was laughing with my wife saying "wow, its a small world"
6 of the 8 R16 matches in the US Open Cup were yesterday, with the other two tonight. How did the ex-RSL'ers do? Tino Nunez did not play in Rochester's 2-1 Extra Time loss to Columbus Abe Thompson (never played a match with RSL after getting picked up and cut this preseason) played the full 90 in Miami's 1-0 loss to Houston Jamie Watson started and played 88 minutes in Austin's 1-0 loss to Chivas USA Joey Worthen did not play in Austin's 1-0 loss to Chivas USA Chris Klein played the full 90 and scored the game winner in LAG's 2-0 win over St. Louis
In the last US Open Cup R16 match: Nate Sturgis played the full 120 and scored Seattle's first goal of the penalty shootout in a 4-3 PK victory (after a 1-1 draw) vs. Portland. Ian Joy went the full 120 for Portland. Alex Nimo started and played 69 minutes for Portland.
Yura scores in Europa qualifying today for Randers! Update: He ended with 2 for the game. https://www.bigsoccer.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1478607
Yura better get working on his paper work. If Findley can make and start for the national team at the world cup... well yeah, Yura should too. I really hope to see him make it at a bigger club, dude has LOADS of potential and is way young
Which national team/teams is Yura eligible for? He was born in Azerbaijan but has negative feelings from what I've heard (because he's not Muslim?). He calls himself Armenian. Is he eligible for Armenia? US Team?
Interesting you should ask, because I've crunched some numbers on this: Born in Azerbaijan: Azeri NT Ranked 119 in world on Balance's favorite index (that'd be ESPN and not FIFA) Chance of playing: 0% (he does not like the Azeris) Armenian Heritage: Armenian NT Ranked 111 in world Chance of playing: 25.6% (he likes Armenia, wants to go to World Cup) Raised in USA: USNT Ranked 19 in world (a cool 100 above the Azeris, so the US would win a game against Azerbaijan by 100 goals - at least I think that is how it works) Chance of playing: Bob Bradley as coach, 50% (he likes surprises at striker) Someone else as coach, 25% Falls in Love, Marries Danish Girl while with Randers: Denmark NT Ranked 37 in the world Chance of playing: 24.6% (have you seen the Danish girls?) The totals do not add up to 100% if Bob Bradley isn't USNT coach because I am a social scientist and not an engineer, and I make up all of my "facts" and "figures" and "statistics" in the first place. In the immortal words of Jack Handey, you may call them facts, but I call them "impressions," and if we have different impressions, so what, can't we all be brothers?
According to the interview here he could play for Armenia or the U.S. and he would rather play for the U.S. According to Ives he will be on the 2014 U.S. World Cup roster...
Yura should get a national team call-up soon, it would be hard to imagine the U.S. not taking notice of his talent. I see him as a huge part of our World Cup Qualifiying in the next few years and if healthy? a member of the U.S. team in Brazil 2014. We sure do miss his aggressive play this season in S.L.C.
Yura is not a US citizen yet. But I read from Ives (who recently named him to a potential US 2014 WC roster) that he is working on getting his citizenship at the moment. To me, Yura would do well in... well.... let me think about that for a day or two...
It's almost impossible for a foreigner to get the chance to play for Denmark, because the danish laws in that area probably are the most strict in Europe ... Mohamed Zidan lived and played in Denmark for 6 years, openly saying that he would like a danish citizenship and to play for the Danish NT... he also refused to play for Egypt, using all sorts of excuses, but finally caved in, when he moved to a German club and then knew he could never become a Danish citizen.... Ther are special rules for other Scandinavians, but if your not of Scandinavia origin, you must have lived in Denmark for a continuous period of at least 9 years to apply for a danish citizenship... and you can only apply if you have no known criminal record and/or are not charged with a criminal offence. .
I dont think the USMNT will even consider Yura IF he gets his papers. His selfish play wont bode well will the team. The USMNT needs to do a better job in getting strickers that play unselfishly
Wrong, Yura has been playing very well in Denmark, and incase you have not noticed, strikers are not coming out of the wood work for the United States. Past selfish play from a young striker needs to be forgiven if you want to see the best possible players on the pitch in the future.
Not because he isn't Muslim, but because he's Armenian. Most Azeris are "culturally" Muslim, and are very tolerant of other religions. On the other hand Armenians and Azeris don't really get along in any situation, regardless of religion.
I agree. I'd rather see Yura than any of our current World Cup strikers, even Altidore/Findley. His size and speed he should be a lock to at least get a look. With citizenship of course.
Yura is a perfect fit for the national team, I dont get how anyone could argue otherwise. He has the size and control (even better) of Jozy, speed that rivals Findley's (you guys dont remember him simply running past defenders here?) and a shot much like Gomez/Buddle in their domestic leagues. Not sure why he shouldnt even be given a chance. Hell, Cunningham got a look by Bradley and he is one of the most selfish players in the history of the US game. really? Dont look at Yura? Yeah, why would we want a guy that is tearing it up in Europe for a team he played a HUGE factor in not only saving from relegation, but now playing in Euro ball (where he scored twice).
