Celtic to face Sporting at Fenway. "The Fenway Football Challenge" apparently. The game will be live on NESN.

Sad that the Revs couldn't somehow get involved with this.

    Thoughts?

Ya... its called Superliga2010. Venue in Boston/Foxboro TBA. I know they have a game scheduled on July 20th. I'd bet the farm they use Fenway for that game.

Sporting wears the hoops in homage to Celtic, fun fact. :D

Sorry, chief, venue: Foxboro, MA. The schedule was already released. I'd like to see them get involved, but that requires initiative and we've seen none of that from the offices at 1 Patriots Place. If it happens at Fenway, that's one beer I owe you.

Too bad they cannot do a soft opening on the 20th for the revs morelia game. Would be a site to see. I bet they get 18K to 20K...

I Wish the Krafts cared about this team like they do the Patriots. This is quite a shame.

It's worth checking out for $20 SRO.

A doubleheader with the Revs would have been juicy.

I asked the team on Twitter if there was an chance of a doubleheader or a game at Fenway and this was the response:

I wonder if El Globo will rip Sporting's fans and get them to pull out of the match.

Being a Sporting fan I'll be looking very forward to this game but I'm disappointed the Revs will not be involved in any shape or form. In my opinion the Front Office dropped the ball on this. Rumors have been going on for months about a game at Fenway this was an opportunity to feature the team in the city but nope nothing. It makes me wonder if the F.O. even contacted the Fenway group to even talk about the possibility of a double header. My guess is probably not. And if they did look into it I would like to know why it fell through, but we'll never get an answer to that either

According to their Twitter, Fenway doesn't meet the requirements of the SuperLiga tournament. Look at the SuperLiga thread for more about this.

Thanks for pointing that out, I didn't realize that it didn't meet the requirement. It's to bad they couldn't do it because it would of been fun to see the Revs play there.

I picked up 16 tickets through a couple of Red sox season ticket holders I know on pre sale and sold them all in a day.

This is going to be a sell out.

That's not true. Sporting's green and white hoops were first used during a exhibition trip to Brasil in 1928, because the Stromp jerseys were not suitable to be used in such a hot climate. The soccer team instead of using them, used Sporting's rugby team jerseys, which had green and white hoops since the previous year.
The man behind those hoops was Sporting president Salazar Carreira who was inspired by a french team he saw wearing red and white hoops.

That said, inspired or not by Celtic's hoops. GREEN AND WHITE HOOPS RULE!

This should be a good match, hopefully everyone's well behaved and has a good time at Fenway.

Come to think of it on the hoops conversation..Rev colors are awfully similar to Rangers so maybe there's a psychological block preventing Boston area Celtic fans from supporting the Revs?...if 38k Celtics/Sporting fans come out of the woodwork in Boston for this friendly maybe we've found the attendance pot of gold: green and white hoop jerseys! It ought to keep at least the local Celtic/Sporting fans happy.
All the FO needs to do is:
    1) get rid of "England" from the team name
    2) re-brand to the green and white and rename ourselves Boston Rev O'Lution
    3) roll out Robbie Keane* in our new green and white hoops kit on St. Patrick's Day** in our new urban stadium
    :D

Thanks for the correction. I thought I had read somewhere that was the case, but I'm wrong.

Other teams who wear the green and white hoops.

I know your post is in jest, but this has been given to me as a reason why the Celtic fans at the Banshee don't support The Revs in total seriousness.

As a person who has been to 2 of these European summer friendlies(almost 8 years ago now), I have no interest in any of these types of games anymore. How the Revs have not been asked to be involved is beyond me. 2 european teams in a preseason friendly, no thank you! I have learned and paid too much money before to see two teams that don't care that much. Any European team or South Ameriocan team against an mls team, I am there in a heartbeat but other than that, I am all set. I hope people enjoy themselves.

Wow, really? Well I was tongue in cheek on most of that post but the green and white hoop re-brand thought actually may be something that could spark more local interest in the Revs (sorry gers fans).

Would be interesting if the Revs did market research among Sporting and Celtic fans at this game to gauge awareness / interest in the Revs locally (especially relevant given the urban environment and fans who don't just say but do go to games).

    Sorry for threadjacking!
