So sweet seeing all the old faces (looking so young, too!).

Clint Peay, Mario Gori, Maessner and Vaudreil, Stev Rammell, Sanneh, and that baby-faced Eddie Pope. And Marco speeding around the field!

And Raul Diaz Arce circa 1996. What can be said?

I'd forgotten how thuggish Tampa Bay was. Kle Kooiman and Ivan McKinley? Yeesh. :)

    Ivan McKinley. Dear God...
Until Zach Wells came along, McKinley was my least favorite player to wear the United shirt.

Ivan was a good dude, he hung out regularly with the Barra whenever he wasn't playing. Up until that time he drank all my beer :D

I've watched the live games the re-runs are better. I'd forgotten how excellent that team was, 3 from RDA and one from Rammel.
Simpson. Gori, Pope, Goose and Peay, lil Richie, Maessner, Harkes, Rammel, Etch and RDA. I was at that game and only wished Tampa had Valderrama and Yallop so we could have whipped them with no excuses. Valdy brought out the real Diablo in Etch. Worth the price of a ticket alone. Oh and the drum man was back from his "lifetime ban" for choking a ref too. Those were the days.

I always loved watching United play against Valderrama, but not because of Etch.
Richie pwned Valderrama, it was always fun to watch :D

That's our problem - nobody on this team gets pissed off any more.

    Check your PMs.

Oh, and I only trade the "Jonny Walker" game for Johnnie Walker Black and Red.

    1. I didn't notice til just yesterday that Diaz Arce wore 2 different jerseys in that TB game...1st half had Diaz Arce on the back, 2nd had just Arce.

    2. These white jerseys they wore vs Vasco were so awesome...at the time though, I didn't really appreciate them...but man, awesome kit.

Love the kits. The USA jerseys reminded me of Vasco....or River Plate.

If you were at the game in Fort Lauderdale back in 1998, raise your hand.

    Raises hand. :D

That was one of my all-time favorite soccer memories. Prior to the game, my wife and I went into Miami and had a nice Cuban meal. Then we walked around "Little Havana" and I went into a hand-rolled cigar shop, chosen completely at random, and bought a few hopeful victory cigars.

Post-game, I was talking to BigSoccer poster Atouk, as I lit up my cigar. He asked if I had an extra, so I gave him one. We're both on cloud nine, waiting in the parking lot near where the team was supposed to come out before boarding their bus. Atouk looks at me and says "hey, did you buy these cigars on purpose?" I ask "what do you mean?" and he says "look at the band, and check out the name."

So I did. The name of the cigar was "Campeones."

Which was a pretty awesome coincidence considering what the team had just accomplished. I have to say it was the best victory cigar I ever tasted.

    :D

    EDDIE POPE!!!

Man, I went absolutely nuts when he scored on the Etch corner.

I also own the jersey that Lassiter wore in this game. Managed to find it on EBay about a year afterwards, and I think it cost me around a hundred bucks. My favorite piece of soccer memorabilia.

Any idea why this is blacked out on Direct TV? (I am in Houston). I called Direct TV--at first they said it's blacked out b/c it's an MLS game and is only available on the package. I told them i have the Direct Kick package. Then the guy said it was likely being shown elsewhere, like on my local Comcast. Obviously it's not. Finally, the guy said this is a Comcast decision, and so is only being shown locally in DC.

Anybody know what's up with this shiznit?

I think its because all of the comcast sports channels are essentially local channels. I know I've been in Philadelphia before during DC United games and they weren't on the Comcast channel up there.

It has to be a COMCAST regional programming decision. While COMCAST is a countrywide provider they program regionally. I'm sure you get Astro's games televised while we get Nat's games. DirectKick only deals with live league games.

I live in FL, have DirecTV and also had this blacked out. I've never been able to watch any of the "classic" DCU games, either this year or in years past, because of blackouts. I have the sports pack and Direct Kick.

It's weird because I can still watch "classic" games from other out of market teams on their respective regional sports channels and have never encountered this issue. One day I'll work up enough motivation to email both DirecTV and Comcast Mid-Atlantic and ask what gives.

Other MLS Markets show classics of their teams? Like Who? Very curious!

...and to the guy who got the Lassiter jersey for that price...lucky bastard :p! I can't even find a black one from that era. :(

Point taken, but getting pissed off while sitting on the bench doesn't help as much!

sorry, should have clarified, I meant other sports...Yankees, Boston Bruins. I understand the reasoning for live tv blackouts, but I see no benefit to blacking out a game from years ago.

Sorry, I should have been more explicit. I have a package that gives me all of the regional sports networks all over the country. So I normally get the Comcast midatlantic (along with the various other comcasts), unless they decide to black something out. Like they did last night.

I talked to a Comcast Mid atlantic rep who says that these decisions are made largely by MLS and the club. the network pays for distribution rights for the local footprint, and not for national distribution. This would fall under national distribution, so that's why they have to be blacked out for all viewings outside of the DC area.

Now, I may call MLS to see what they say -- after all, I have purchased Direct Kick. But I am doubting anyone will care.
