I can't see Argentina having trouble here. No offense to Mexico but Argentina's just too deadly this world cup.

Two things may come into play though... suspect defense and Maradona coaching. Yes... they look deadly, and they certainly have a good offensive trio up front... but they do not have a real creative midfielder that can clarify things in a close defensive match (like Riquelme), and their defense has looked vulnerable against bad teams.

Mexico tends to play better against teams that give them some space to roam... and unlike Uruguay, Argentina will give them that in spades.

I think this is going to be a very memorable match (just like in 2006), regardless of who wins.

This may well be the most intriguing round of 16 match-up yet. Brazil vs. Spain, Portugal vs. Spain, or England vs. Germany may seem like more attractive matches, but the fact these two met in 2006 and Argentina won only with a late goal makes this confrontation one that soccer fans must not miss!

Mexico is better than it was in 2006, but Messi is 4 years older and better. Mexico will test Argentina's defense, and Mexico will face a team better than all of the ones it faced in Group A.

I predict Argentina will win, but it'll be a war. If somehow Mexico advances, I definitely won't be surprised.

This is a match I'm really looking forward to especially after the memorable match of 2006. This is a match Mexico can win and no doubt will be up for but I really see this Argentina side dialed in which I myself didn't think was going to happen. I really can't say for sure if we'll see the line-ups from the first two matches in their entirety but I would definitely like to see Burdisso on for Demechelis, Pastore on for Veron and Clemente moved to the right side. Aside from that I'd stick with the rest of the players we've started with.

The great thing about Mexico vs. Argentina is that both teams play wide open atacking games.

No bunkering or cynical dives for set-piece goals. Neither team is noted for its defense and they have be attack oriented teams to compensate.

Very similar playing styles while Argentina has the individual talent advantage Mexico always plays up to prestigious opposition.

Both coaches have been criticized for being stubborn about their player and formation choices. Both have guided their teams to the knockout rounds and will pick whatever formation and whatever players they fkn want and everyone else just has to accept it.

I'd like to see Mexico play a 4-2-3-1 but it isn't going to happen because Aguirre doesn't give a crap about anyone else's opinion.

My favorite lineup (assuming Vela is injured):
    --------------------Ochoa-----------------------
    --Osorio-----Rafa----------Maza------Salcido--
    --------------Juarez-------Torrado---------------
    ---Barrera-----------Gio-------------Guardado---
    -------------------Chicharito---------------------

What we will probably see 4-3-3:
    -------------------Conejo------------------------
    Osorio-------Maza----------Moreno----Salcido-
    ---------Juarez-----Rafa-------Torrado----------
    -----Gio-----------Guille----------Barrera/Quien Sabe?-

That's what I'd like to see too. In the Argentina-Mexico thread in the Argentina forum I posted the same line-up, with the exception of Maxi Rodriguez instead of Pastore. I think it's always a plus to have wingers like Maxi that can cause trouble on the flanks and center the ball to our forwards. Besides, I also like seeing Messi more in the middle and in control of the team.

Still, I wouldn't mind seeing Pastore: he's an outstanding player that has a lot to offer to the team. Too bad that Maradona will (most likely) opt for Veron over both Pastore and Maxi. :(

I'd actually liked to see Veron come on over Pastore. His dominion of the Jubulani on long distance passing has been superb! His cambios de frente will create the width we might need without the wide players. While he might only last 60-75 mins, they might be all we need.

It's not really a matter of how long he can last on the pitch, IMO: the guy is in amazing shape and can easily play the whole game. I just personally don't think he contributes much to the team and actually takes away from what others could bring in his place.

Anyway, it's going to be a great game.. can't wait till Sunday.

Micho will be alright against Mexico, don't worry about him. Still, a tough opponent who knows how to play us. Messi and Tevez must have a go at the Mexican defenders, good things will happen for us if they do that.

Would Carlos Vela return from injuries on time? If so, the intensity of this match exceeds my expectations...

This is the probably the first game where Argentina's back line will be tested, Uruguay managed to shutout Mexico though.

I can't see how Argentina can screw up the next one after topping their group stage with ease. Mexico are a good side but Argentina is just unstoppable now.

    Carlos Vela is overrated.

I think a 4-3-1-2 would be fine for Mexico but for teams that really bunker, we should go with a Barca style 4-3-3 to stretch them on the wings.

These factors will indeed give Argentina problems, but not with Mexico, they themselves will have bigger self exploits facing a team like Argentina. Hopefully Brasil can! :p
vulnerable defense against "bad" teams? their are no bad teams in the World Cup, and I think their defense is solid; but for sure Mexico will test their defense more than the teams they faced.

Very true! which is why it'll be a great game to watch.

in yesterdays match how much time veron loose the ball in the midfield and i never saw any creative pass made by veron yesterday.....

but once after pastores arrival team looks more fluent , more importantly messi looks more dangerous with the combo of messi and pastore personaly i love to watch pastore instead of veron .

and i think we need to reconsider the 3-striker strategy against mexico so my line up will be

    ----------------------------Romero----------------------------
    clemente---------Burdisso---------samuel-----------heinze

    --------------------------mash----------------------------

    ------Maxi--------------Pastore----------------Dimaria---------

    -----------messi----------------------------------------------

    ----------------------------------Higuain---------------------

True, but when you have South Korea, Greece and Nigeria as your oponents, you don't need to be "too strategic" anyway.

It remains to be seen if he can do just as well with more challenging opposition.

So he gets no credit whatsoever? I have been one of his biggest critics all throughout qualifying and before the cup. So far he's impressed in pretty mcuh every aspect.

His tactics have improved slowing during his reign as coach. Beating Germany in Germany seems like a challenge even if it was a friendly.

This is the wrong forum to criticise his coaching. Plenty of people have been crying about it for the past year, so we have heard it all.

Fact is we are 3-0, when Germany, Spain, France, England etc. aren't
Maybe you'll say England and Spain's group was easier than ours....
