A free kick from 25 yds out into the top corner is hardly lucky.

Oh I agree, and that was a beautiful goal!
I meant lucky in not conceding any goal to clear Greece's chances (and a debatable disallowed equalizer). Well that's soccer and the tables can turn around next game :)

Well, i don't think I am going to get into this kind of talk... there is no "must not win" in world cup... haha

Anyway, my greek friends don't fall under your generalized description and, in fact, really worry that Greece will fair miserably... The Korean team is very respected. Perhaps among teens there is some excess of pride and trash talking... I look past this.

There seems to be a lot of skepticism as to the thoroughness of the Greek camp owed to their relative lack of friendly preparation compared to other teams and their short return to Greece for a day or two before leaving for South Africa. Perhaps someone who is in the know can elaborate as to why they're returning.

One player I was impressed with was Ninis who is highly spoken of among Greek supporters that I know but, ironically may not start at all for any of the matches due to the manager's insistence on known qualities. Having said that, he does add the option of dangerous forays forward from midfield and is a very creative attacking outlet. One player I was less than impressed with was Papadopolous who might be troubled by some players with pace.

Avraam Papadopoulos is a terrible player. Papastathopoulos and Moras are both much better than him. Seeing Avraam start against Paraguay worries me that Rehagle will play him against Korea.

That said, i dont like our chances. Players look disinterested and some that should not start probably will, i.e. seitaridis, tziolis, charisteas, etc.

All you greek fans out there,

Korean media is reporting that Moras and the Liverpool defender (Kry something) are injured and likely to miss Korea match. Is it true or made up story

Moras most likely out but Kyrgiakos is ok. The puzzle looks hard for Rehagel...

I think S. Korea are the favorites but Nigeria most likely for the 2nd spot. I doubt they will find Argentina at its best in their opener...

Latest (JUNE 9) moneyline odds for all you would-be punters:

(quick and dirty: for +numbers, that's the amount you would win if you bet $100, for -numbers, that's the number you would need to bet, to win $100).

    betus: Greece +150, draw +210, Korea +185

    bet365: Greece +162, draw +210, Korea +188

    paddypower: Greece +163, draw +210, Korea +180

    bodog: Greece +150, draw +200, Korea +180

    titanbet: Greece +158, draw +208, Korea +190

    average: Greece +157, draw +208, Korea +187

Comment: I've followed the lines over the past few months, and it appears that money has turned east toward Korea over the last month or so, as various power rankings and views on form/fitness have dropped the odds on Korea from +300 down to a low of +180. Money on Greece has dried up a bit, pushing the odds to make a Greek victory look more attractive, as book-makers leech.

Call this one even, and a punter would still see Korea as the value bet if a no-draw were the call, but a draw pays double and that's where a neutral might see the most bang.

not really into betting but very well described!

we may well see two X's in group B's openers which will leave only Nigeria happy ...

Both South Korea AND Greece will be looking for the 3 points here. They know this is their "easy" match.

That said, South Korea's been looking much stronger in the recent flurry of friendlies.

South Korea have got their best team in years to face us. Its sure gonna be tough.

But i reckon if we can just weather the storm and try to sneak a goal on the break we'll do ok. So long as we dont concede an early goal. Coz if we do, we're screwed. Idk how we'll react but we havent been at the WC for a long time so ya know. But im optimistic bout our chances tbh.

    What is this nonsense?

Why would Koreans be looked down upon? How are they considered lucky to be qualified for the WC? And when was the last time Korea half-assed a significant match (regardless of the strength of the opponent).

Lastly, the Greek's have not shown any arrogance about their upcoming match against Korea, in fact, they recognize the importance of the opening match and although it could be implied that the Greeks worry more about Nigeria and Argentina, the same applies to Korea. Why? Because both Nigeria and Argentina are a better team than Korea and/or Greece. To be honest, it seems like you're reading random articles to affirm your biased interpretation of how the Korean's are perceived and using that as support to how the Greeks are arrogant, but you're wrong on both counts.

Korean football is still looked down upon in general. People who do know some stuffs don't see us as a "We should beat them 6-0" type of team though.

It is the casual soccer fan that tends to look down on South Korea.

The casual soccer fan thinks that Brazil, Spain, Ivory Coast, Argentina, Japan, France and other "good reputation team" are the favorites.

Well most of the teams are being "looked down" ... but who cares really. It's not easy if you don't make it to the top consistently to be considered "strong". On top of that, you (the national team) have to have "big names" that pay big in popular domestic leagues. So it is about money too. It's a bit of showbiz.

The hell? The same Japan that went from winning a 1-0 match to losing 3-1 to Australia within a 10 minute span? the same Japan that went from winning a 1-0 friendly against England to losing 2-1 off two OWN GOALS????

    Japan. Lol.

good call pourfood. unfortunately that kid has already littered this thread. seriously folks, no need to turn this into a troll-fest.

no denying the importance of this match to both teams: crucial W to get the tournament rolling and to garner a little breathing room so to speak.

big Greek population in my hometown and like a previous poster said, other than the brash "kids" (of which Korea have our fair share as well :p) the majority of knowledgable Greek fans are well aware of Korea's strengths and weaknesses and are very respectful for what they are in for come tomorrow morning.

at the outset, the pundits might have looked past this group, but the leadup to the tourney has proven this group to be VERY interesting. 3 teams that are for the most part on par mixed with a giant led by their unpredictable talisman. anything could happen...

what ever happens tomorrow i hope both S. Korea and Greece remain contenders in this group. I don't wish for a tie... just that i have secret hopes that Argentina and Nigeria will lose some games to make it interesting for all till the end of the group phase.
