I'm starting this thread to give foreigners some ideas as to what they can buy as gifts or memorabilia in South Africa. Some of these items you can buy here, and ship it to your own home while you are here... Here's to start it off: - Wooden sculptures (everywhere, Pta Zoo) - Beaded vuvuzela (edgars) - South African Art + Link (various art muzeums & galleries, artists next to the road) - Locally produced clothing (once i bought one of the coolest pair of shoes overseas) - South African music - Draadkar
i love CT t shirt wire art beadwork table mountain replica bafana jersey stone from robben island stone from table mountain bottle of sand from the best beaches in the world. anything you can buy off the side of the road. world cup dog clothing (yes) anything from souvenir stores etc. little men sculpture things (not sure what theyre called) wooden sculptures pottery
Very good idea - I have contacts if you want. Also a commerative coin from the mint - check http://goldcoinbroker.co.za/fifa 2010 soccer world cup laduma set.html
Great thread idea! Interested by the South African music idea. Anything you had in mind in particular? I would want something different, not just the South African version of UK/USA mainstream.
This will be ideal gifts if you can actually find them: - Makarapa http://www.witness.co.za/portal/wit.../30000/29859/SA footie fans2_image_lowres.jpg
Woolworths are selling beaded brooches - little figurines holding a flag or a soccer ball + a I love RSA chocolate for R49 in aid or Aids orphans. Very nice and small to take home and the chocolate is delicious - the stuff I have to do for research!!
I'm not that big into SA music.... If you want something different, why not someone like Steve Hofmeyr? Here is a list of music i feel like posting. Not meaning I'm a fan or not. Some of the music I love, some of it I hate, but really worth looking into it: - [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMK2RWM7HXo"]Leon Schuster[/ame] (world cup song) - Mandosa(official site) and [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RqkVq3u4_fY&feature=PlayList&p=3EB608EC9079EC9F&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=18"]on youtube[/ame] - Tree 63 - Reana Nel - The Parlotones - South African Music awards and official website link
Emmex, those Makarapa's look really cool! Do you think they will have ones for each country? How much do they run for?
They do but very expensive as they are unique, considered art and hand made - between R250 and R400. Google them (also MAKARABA) for orders and prices. http://www.makaraba.co.za/
They are usually self made by fans for their own teams in SA. But maybe if you ever see a person with one, and make a good offer, you may buy it from him. I personally consider it original art and my estimation for one would be between R500 and R1000...which i personally would find it worth it. It would make a great decoration in your home, especially a bar, which may also have a story to tell with it. As for there being originals for your own country? I doubt that there will be many...I am guessing these things may be rather rare, and each one being very unique. Maybe even collectable... You can also try this website: http://www.makarapa.co.za/ (snap Grounum!) (bewteen R200 and R300, lower than my estimated worth) Gallery: 3-5 of these can really make a cool display impact against a wall or on top of a shelf/bar...almost like installation art...
Gronum, for an original piece of art, that is by no means expensive. The only concern i would have is transporting this back to your country. Maybe ship it from here http://www.sapo.co.za/ (south african post office) http://www.dhl.co.za/en.html http://www.postnet.co.za/
Wow, these are amazing. Thanks guys. Taking it back might be a concern. Worst case scenario, I'll put it on my head for the plane ride home.
Souvenirs for our Family/Friends I'm sure I'm not the only one being bombarded with requests from friends and family to bring them back something from South Africa. What's everyone else thinking when it comes to souvenirs? Scarfs? I'm hoping to find something that's not too expensive and universal so I could buy them by the bulk (in hope of not forgetting anyone) and just hand them out when I get back. Maybe after I view a few corner stands I'll quickly see many options.
Re: Souvenirs for our Family/Friends Soccer stuff - scarves, flags, makarapa helmets, vuvuzelas, shirts, soccerball hats. Beaded articles (small and cheap) - flag keyrings, wild animals, flowers. wooden artciles - masks, animals, salad servers, bowls For the kids - wire cars, wire beaded flowers, soccer ball chocolates, pannini stickers and albums, Naartjie clothing, soccer ball chips Rooibos tea Nice and expensive - Commemerative gold coins, diamonds, Carol Boyes pewterware, gold jewellry, art.
Re: Souvenirs for our Family/Friends ".......wild animals" I want one! NO 2, I want an Elephant and a Lion ;-)
Re: Souvenirs for our Family/Friends has anyone thought about bringing a vuvuzela back with them? For those who do not know it is one of those big horns they blow at the ground. Anyone know if it will fit in normal suitcase or you can carry it is handluggage at airport?
Re: Souvenirs for our Family/Friends BaSotho Hat There's also small ones that you can hang in your rear-view mirror of your car.
Re: Souvenirs for our Family/Friends Please don't take Mandela though - we want him here! Vuvuzela will not fit in a normal suitcase but you get smaller ones.
