Suideroord is in Jhb south, so Southgate mall will be your closest. Sorry - pta is pretoria! I am sure you will find stuff near Soccer city - not too familiar with Jhb south re safety. You can also try Newtown in the city centre, Oriental Plaza (more indan type stuff there - saris, material, spices, food, samoosas yum etc) Chinatown (chinese crap but lots of knock off soccer stuff). Ask your host about flea markets close by else Rosebank would be your best bet even though it is a bit far from you - held every Sunday. Try this site - might find something closer http://www.southafrica.info/travel/cities/shopping.htm

If you can't make it there try Rietvlei Nature reserve in Pretoria - It has almoste everything except Ellies and Giraffe and it is 40 - 50 km from Jhb.

Kruger June 13 - 16th is when I will be going on a guided safari. Another person I've met on this board (from Chicago too no less) is also going with me.

If you're interested, contact billy@southern-eagle.com and see if he has availability left. I'm going to the US game then getting picked up the next day for this excursion. Cost was $1200 USD which isn't bad at all considering lodging is included

I'm going to South Africa with a friend and we're going to be staying just outside of J'burg and attending the US-England match. However, he leaves J'burg a few days after that match to catch England's second match and I stay in J'burg to catch the U.S.-Slovenia match. So far I'm going to that second U.S. match by myself and would like to meet up with other U.S. fans if possible to hang out and watch the match. I'm a girl so if there are any other girls going solo or groups that include girls, that'd be great! Just looking to have a great time and enjoy the game with other die-hard U.S. fans.

One more reply to anyone who is interested! We are going to be taking a trip to Carnivore Restaurant. A few of us, all solo'ers but everyone is welcome!
    http://www.carnivore.co.za/index.php

If you are interested, the evening of the 16th is likely and maybe we can get a group to head over to a FIFA fan park afterwards to watch South Africa vs. Uruguay.

I don't have tickets for USA v Slovenia, nor am I female. But I am awesome. :) OK, in all seriousness, I think my journey to the next game in the next city will push me towards trying to get a ticket for that match, but would be on my way to Bloemfontein shortly after. If your gang doesn't mind a dude, I wouldn't mind meeting up with ya'alls in J'burg. I am a solo traveler. Let me know!

I will be solo in Durban June 18-19

I will also be in Johannesburg June 13-17, and in Cape Town June 20-22. In both places, I will be joining up with a friend also going from USA (and one of her friends).

    Hello,

Sorry for the long post but any help would be great.

    I am planning my stay from June 25 - July 15. I have tickets to match 52, 54, 55, 58, 60, and 63. I will most likely get match 50 and Spain-Chile.

My questions are as follows and a tentative plan for activities:

    June 25 Spain-Chile Pretoria 2030

    June 26 Round 16 Rustenburg 2030

    June 27 Round 16 Johannesburg 2030

    June 28 Round 16 Johannesburg 2030

    June 29 Round 16 Pretoria 1600

    June 30 Free Day Safari???

    July 1 Free Day Safari???

    July 2 Quarterfinal Johannesburg 2030

    July 3 Quarterfinal Johannesburg 2030

    July 4

    July 5

    July 6

    July 7

    July 8

    July 9

    July 10 3rd Place Port Elizabeth 2030

July 11 FINAL! Travel to CPT and watch Final

July 12 Cape Town Shark Dive ???

July 13 Cape Town Sky Dive / Golf / Wine Tour ???

July 14 Cape Town Penninsula Tour ???

    July 15 Cape Town Depart

As you can see, I have several days to do various things. I really want to get the most out of my trip so spending a lot on accommodations is not important. So does anyone have some good ideas for my free days or alternatives to what I have in mind already?

I was thinking hostels for cheap accommodation since I am only going to sleep but I want something clean and safe too. As far a transportation, to and from matches, etc., what are other solo travelers doing?

I was thinking of the BazBus for travel from Jo'Burg to Port Elizabeth and hostels along the way too since it looks like a great way to see the country.

Thanks everyone and I hope to meet other solo travelers.

    Hi all,

I too am joining the ranks of those bailed on by "friends." Hopefully yours at least paid for their tickets! I had hoped to drive to Victoria Falls from Jo'Berg between my 6/27 and 7/2 games and possibly check out one of the game reserves on the way http://madikwe.safari.co.za/ Has anyone looked into anything similar?

Shark diving in Capetown seems to be the other "must do". I look forward to reading other's posts on their planned adventures.

    Match 52 6/27 Jo'Berg - extra ticket
Match 54 6/28 Jo'Berg - would like to sell both
Match 56 6/29 Capetown - would like to sell both
    Match 58 7/2 Jo'Berg - extra ticket
    Match 59 7/3 Capetown - extra ticket

    Cheers

I looked into that, but it is a good 50-60 hours of driving round trip, that's probably 5-6 days of 10 hours behind the wheel, you will get there see how nice the falls are and then have to head back. Although I'm sure there is plenty to see driving through Botswana or Zimbabwe, it's just too far for me. Get a plane from Joburg to Livingstone, then it's only a few miles to the falls, return flights are around £175 ($250) on 1time and a little more on BA.

Is anyone going to be in Cape Town June 19-22?

Other than shark diving with some friends who are getting in the 21, I have no plans if anyone else also finds themself solo. Tons to do in Cape Town including wineries, restaurants, hiking etc. Let me know, I'll be staying at the Cape Castle Hotel right near the water
