I suspect that ITN would actually make a good moderator. There was always a strong sense of fairness about him, in spite of his sometimes entrenched positions when it came to policy.

My top 5... The biggest and most important issues we're currently screwing up:

    1. Completely and radically alter the educational system.

    2. Reform corporate regulatory environment based on overall best interests of the nation.

    3. Begin coordinated conversion to a national energy policy based on renewable resources.

    4. End the Drug War and all other government restrictions on victimless behavior.

    5. Reformulate foreign policy focused on long term national priorities.

I like all of these, but 3 is critical in my mind, and I would add one to it: coordinate a national trade policy.

Not just negotiated agreements like NAFTA. Given the rise of China with a centralized plan for markets and trade, I think the US needs to get more of a grip on long term trade and not simply allow the markets and business evolution control. While we are waiting for evolution, China will corner the markets in places like Africa and India.

True. I hoped that would be covered between #2 and #5, but maybe it's its own thing...

I don't know anything about visa relations we may have with countries. Frankly, this is all utopia-level stuff. The current logistics behind any of this, especially my ascendency to the "throne" of the U.S. would be very hard to comprehend.

I'd just like to see our country put those two languages, especially English, at the top in every way possible. It is our identity.

You know that Germans are still historically the biggest groups of immigrants to the US, if you don't lump Irish and English together, right? (soon to be overtaken by Mexicans, however). English is deeply embedded in the American culture, but pursuing an active cultural policy promoting English and Spanish is going to rightly antagonize some of your allies. I mean it's not like European culture, which you are still a part of somehow, is deeply divided by language. Just think of paintings, music, or sports, for example.

Having said that, it would make sense to have compulsary Spanish classes at some level in school (the earlier the better). But then you should maybe promote foreign languages in general, it should not be at the expense of Latin, Mandarin or French classes.

That's weird because in my idea of utopia, the death penalty is neither necessary nor desirable.

Not a bad idea. Depends on how you define "south." I want to keep Lousiana for the food and music. :D

-Eliminate 75% of all military expenditures
-Turn SS and Medicare/Medicaid into a simple, low contribution-low benefit, means tested social insurance program.
-Decentralize nearly every single federal agency possible. Let the states solve their own problems and pay for their own solutions
-Auction off federal lands to pay down the national debt
-Cut taxes, let the states raise taxes as much as they feel to compensate

"If you were King of the USA, what would you do?"

assuming the USA was a constitutional monarchy, I would immediately eliminate the constitution and dissolve Congress.

Historically it makes sense they'd be. But again, I don't keep track of these stats.

Hey hey. Some of them speak spanish. :p

Well, I believe in some level of language conformity. Agree to disagree on that, I suppose. Yes, we ultimately have European roots, but we are not Europe.

Absolutely agreed! But I think English and Spanish are the most important. Immersion in other languages should also be required, but to lesser proficiency. More just for exposure. I think I'll be fine not being fluent in Polish. But if it's offered at a school, great.

Guess utopia is a bad word, but boy! If you non-San Diegans are keeping track of the Chelsea King / amber Du Bois murders , this Gardner guy is scary as hell. Sorry, but this guy serves no purpose on earth. He is human, but that's not saying anything.

I know he's the new guy, but I feel so sorry for his cellmate.
