No way man. The Colorado Rapids. Somewhat central, large soccer complex, and needs a boost in attendance anyway.

Well...MLS will never scratch those leagues until they have star players or star teams.

If that is what folks want..that's fine...I'd like a bit more.

Re: Henry signs with New York

Well, if you are going to use those standards, I'd say Chicago and Dallas has the edge on both cities. If you're looking at a superclub in the middle of the country, at least Chi-town and the Big D have over a million people and several billionaires (if only Jerrah would buy FCD... he might not know about soccer, but he'll damn sure hire someone who does... lol) and are a HELL of a lot more multicultural.

Of course, very few will ever go for those standards. LA and NY have the advantage (unless Jerry Jones buys FC Dallas, then there are three...:D)

Anyways, if this Thierry Henry rumor is true (and though I don't believe in the Sun, I do appreciate Steven Goff most of the time) welcome to the States and yet another Gillette commercial. Only this time, Tiger probably won't be there to steal your thunder...

As someone who was a daily reader of The Sun while I lived in England, I would disagree. The Sun does a great job with its football coverage.

Being of Irish ancestry it would pain me to root for Henry, at least until he scores his first goal for my local side and then jeers would turn to cheers. If other fans around MLS want to come out and boo Henry for whatever reason, it would be great, just like how Becks became a villain after a while. Makes a great story, and indeed, MLS needs some hype here and there.

As for Z Roberto, he would help tap into that Brazilian population near the RBArena, so RBNY at least has some good ideas brewing.

The post World Cup period could see the most name players since the first few campaigns when we had Valdaramma, Etcheverry, Donadoni, eventaully Stoichkov.

    Or not. We shall see.

Seems that we've found the flaw in the SuperClub concept... ;)

Re: Henry signs with New York

But it has to be the right kind of star power. If every MLS team had at least one name DP of the likes of Henry, Beckham, Ronaldinho, Ljungberg, along with a solid side including other DPs or former DPs who may not be as famous to the average fan but still quality (Angel, Schellotto) plus better young signings and solid role players were now seeing from Central and South America and Eastern Europe, etc., you'd see a difference in time.

When teams then come to your town once a season you have a marketing draw (Come see Henry battle Ronaldinho! Tonight only!) to get folks to the stadiums, and then they see a higher quality than they're used to seeing in MLS and they want to come back and solidify themselves as a supporter of their own team.

Beckham did that his first full year in the league. 66,000 at Giants Stadium when they were averaging 12,000, away games in larger stadiums, etc.

This new DP rule, along with the ability to not have to neuter the rest of your team to accommodate him, plus the academies and better scouting of players, could pay some real dividends in the coming years.

you just wait, RSL is going to be the first Massive Super Nova club, destroying all of MLS and getting an invite to play in the EPL in the coming years.

ill believe this henry rumor when he is in a Red Bull uniform kicking the ball around. until then ill continue to use The Sun as toiletpaper.

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to TheUltra again.

In all seriousness, if this happens (I don't trust anything from the S*n, such a classless rag) its a very good thing for the MLS.

MLS wil never have such star players as those leagues as long as they a summer league and don't have something on the lines of the UEFA Champions League

I don't really see a lot of vitriol coming from MLS fans, namely because a decent amount of time has passed since the handball. Plus, unlike Beckham, Henry showed remorse for his sins.

Well if we're gonna get all theoretical... I've got to toss St Louis into the mix. No salary cap, and yet with a few big signings, a stomp through the Open Cup, a CCL win and a deep effort into CWC, they'd have a team moved there in two shakes of Garber's finger. All for half the cost of an expansion franchise.

I love how this thread is about Henry, but it didn't even make it past page 1 before the convo shifted to "yeah whatever. who else?"

You should go talk to some DC United fans about a highly rated, slightly aged, supposedly unwanted Argentine midfielder being signed, sealed and delivered....

Re: Henry signs with New York

I am hoping at least 3 teams out of LA, DC, NY, and Seattle bring in at least one name big enough to be a decent road draw. Of course they need to help the product on the field, too. It'd be nice to see some decent crowds in some of the struggling stadiums even if it's not because of what the home offices are doing. Plus as weird as beckhamania was, it's good to have buzz about the league.

As someone who lives in England, no, no it doesn't. The Sun is little more than a rag, if the Times/Guardian/Telegraph had reported it then you might have a point.
