I was at the game tonight, the stadium is just beautiful. Couple of thoughts. Chinn is a terrible horrible player. Two goals but he just had to poke them in. He can't control, pass or dribble. He's slow doesn't make proper runs, but that I think will come with time, however he's a bad player. I was impressed with tchani, very good first half, was a no show for the second. He needs to command the ball more get match fit & we could have a pretty .good midfield. Daluz was pretty good, def liked him and also thought # 99 added a spark..need to see more of these players. Albright looked dreadful, however, I know he's been injured so he deserves a few more games. Overall, I'm super excited about the season. Riquelme would be ideal for this team. Hey, wishing is free :)

Had a great time these past two games despite the losses. Most of the Red Bull fans we encountered were really cool.

But there are some bad eggs in your ranks. Many of us were threatened and physically intimidated, like the 70 or 80 of you that surrounded the 5 of us walking back to the train station. That was about to get ugly before one of your own, a huge guy in a Red Bull hard hat, came to our side and played the cooler. You need more of those guys, and less of the riffraff.

Some of the worst I've encountered this week in Newark are the British ex-pats. Fat, sad bastards in their forties who think they're still on Green Street. Get with the program. It's 2010. You're at a freaking MLS game. I'm pretty sure I speak for most Red Bulls fans as well when I say that we all have real lives that we're going to get on with once the game is over.

I'd be horrified if something really violent were to happen to someone on either side of the Delaware River. The rock throwing, too? Is it 2010 B.C.?

Much love to the fans who welcomed us. I have hopes that this can be the most spirited rivalry in MLS (implying that we would win at some point). This is a first world country. Let's act like it.

I understood the point just fine. MY POINT was the stadium feed rarely, if ever, zooms out to see the stands. If you're at the stadium and your eyes on the screen AND the camera is zoomed out, you're going to have a difficult time seeing the relevant detail around the ball. The screen is just too far away and not big enough. HENCE, they must zoom in. Getting a wide view is not an option. It's a different story when you're at home watching the thing on a television set that is ten feet from your face.

No one running the stadium feed was intentionally keeping the camera view away from the empty seats, which was the implication in the post to which I was replying.

Any word on Le Toux's injury?
It would be a shame for the league to lose him.

Tony Tchani was a standout player, Chinn hustled his ass off and did what forwards are supposed to do.. put the ball in the back of the net, Nielsen over dribbled, Albright will be an upgrade at RB.

It is not rude in the least. If RB supporters are threatening other supporters that is a valid reason to post.

If it is true it is BS, this should not happen.

There's seriously no place for threatening any other supporter. Out chant them, do some friendly ribbing... but actual threats? (not to mention moronic stuff like rock throwing) - NO. Get away from being associated with my team.

Outmost respect to those who were there last night (despite weeknight, less meaningful game, B team etc.)!

How was the atmosphere? Is the reported 3,000 attendance a real number? I thought it might be because it was not included in the ST's. If so, I am actually much more impressed by it than the hugely inflated 15k for the MLS game on Saturday.

    Thanks

I am sorry, didn't really mean to be rude. The experience was fresh on my mind after the two hours back to Philly. And I doubt the antisocial element of either fan base is really active on here either. But it's the responsibility of the people who are smart enough to know better to police their own supporters.

EDIT: How awesome would it be if our capo and yours met on the banks of the Hudson to secure a truce like Tony Soprano and Johnny Sack?...oh wait, I don't think that ended well. Or at all. "Don't Stop Believin'"??????

As a long time San Francisco fan, I have seen all 4 years of Coner's time there (plus the"video"). Your reaction is valid. It was mine so many times as well. Where he, Conor, earned my respect was after McDonald (Quakes) graduated and Coner led his team to the WCC title.

USF under Viser for much of the time plays a 1-2-3-4 (or 1-5-4 for others). Chin played the "1" spot and now holds the WCC goals scored record. Coner broke his USF predecessor's WCC record at the #1 spot; Aaron Chandler.

Coner looks "lazy" IMO because he uses change of speed so well. Think of the other Coner on the USMNT. Chinn looks like a poacher because his goals are "garbage". But I think Chinn will grow on you as he scores in bunches like his track record has been.

I am so looking forward to come to the RB Arena in September and to America's #1 city.

Personally thought it was a great atmosphere last night despite the relatively empty stadium. I think 3K is a hell of a turnout for the 1st of potentially three play-in games.

And FWIW, i dont think 15K was inflated from last weekend.

Had an absolute blast last night. So sweet to beat those guys twice in 4 days. That's the way to start out a new rivalry.

Not a bad turnout. That was the first Open Cup match I'd been to since the ill-fated Final with Chicago back in... when was that? In any case, I felt like there probably WERE nearly 3,000 people there last night which was about the same as we had at that final.

    A few thoughts.

    A. I’m openly anti-Stammler much of the time, love his tackling but have always found him a turnover waiting to happen. However, last night I thought he was truly worthy of the captain’s armband. He delivered trademark crunching tackles, made smart decisions and generally held down the middle of the park. Was this just the fact that he was facing inferior competition? Or is the competition for the starting spot with Robbo a really good thing? Dunno...

    B. Tony Tchani probably has the potential to be a talent in this league. However, if I were Backe I’d have given him the Ferguson “Hairdryer” last night. The thing about this game young Tony, is the fact that it’s played by a TEAM. YOU are not out there alone. PASS the ball EARLIER. YOU are no longer the star you may have been in college. YOU will need to work MUCH harder if you want to break into the first team. Do NOT yell at the ref when you cough up the ball, you get cocky someone takes the ball from you. That’s how it works.
I felt like I was watching Freddy Adu at times with his hands in the air as if to say “ref! I’m Freddy Adu! I’m a star! That I lost the ball can not have been my fault!”

    C. Nielsen is the real deal. However, was it just me or did the look on his face indicate that playing with the “reserves” was well below him. I felt like he could have taken that game by the scruff of the neck but instead he looked like he couldn’t be bothered.

    D. Albright might look rusty but he looks like a proper right back to me. Hats off to Jeremy Hall for busting his tail in there but for my money I hope we see Albright return to his pre-injury form. I think we saw glimpses of that last night.

    E. There’s a massive fall-off from Petke/Ream to Mendes/Boyens.

    F. I really want to see more of Agudello and Garcia. Garcia brought a lot of spark and intent to that right side during his few minutes on the pitch.

His post wasn't rude. If fact, he complemented many Red Bull fans, and thanked one in particular. Not sure how that is rude.

Look, there is a big difference between rivalry banter and harrassment. Banter should not make anyone scared for his/her safety. It doesn't take a genious to know the difference. Anyone that gets their rocks off by intimidating others is just a pathetic little worm.

If I see any rock throwing or harrassement by ANY fans, I will do something about it. And this is not a threat of me coming in with fists flying. It is a threat of me calling the cops, taking pics with my camera phone, and making sure that these idiots don't come back.

And at this point, I realize that my posts sometimes come off a bit preachy, and I want to acknowledge that I used your post as a springboard, eighty, and I am not in any way trying to insinuate that you are a thug, or even condone thuggish behavior.

    Now, a couple of observations:

Was it me, or did Philly have more than 3 subs?

Next, Conner Chinn is the new Woly. His goals, his fight, and his lack of "eligance" reminded me of Woly to the T. I'm really glad to have him signed. His positioning was pretty good, but his goals came from not giving up and fighting every last step of the way. He never let up, and was really frustrating the Philly defense.

Tchani lost his edge in the second half, but he was a rock star in the first half. There was no doubt of his efforts on the field.

The kids pressured Philly a hell of a lot more than the old men did Saturday. They played some of the best soccer this season in that first half. Now, if there is some way to keep that pace going all game!

Open Cup rules allow each team to substitute up to four players.

We had four subs as well:
    Albright for Mendes
    Garcia for Über Maury Povich
    Da Luz for Nielsen
    Woly for Agudelo

Hey hey, new to the fourms. Nice to be amongst local fans.

I was at the game last night and I have to say, I think we looked better going forward than we did on Saturday.

I agree with the positive reviews of Tchani (overlooking his tude' and bad acting). I don't quite understand Nielsen.. I know he's a real talent, but I also know he thinks he's too big for MLS. In his first ever interview he clearly stated his goal was to "move to a bigger league" instead of just saying something safe like "work hard and grow as a player" and let the subtext handle it, he pretty obviously thinks he's too cool for school. But my response to that is "PROVE IT".. show us how good you are.

I agree with Albright deserving a start. I don't think he looked rusty at all, I saw some really lovely through balls down the right side from him. So my question is, with Albright back in, do we start Hall in midfield? I think Hall has the best cross on the team... and I'm pretty much done with Richards. They need to quite trying to sell him to us as some linchpin of the team, I'd rather have Ubi start over him.

Garcia was great, good energy, pretty little step overs...

Chinn needs to shoot more. He was a little too indecisive for me sometimes. He had 2 chances where he should have fired first touch where instead he tried to control the ball. Just work the keeper, don't think too much about it.

It looked like the Backe system reaches down to the sub bench. The team was very well organized and wouldn't have given the Philly reserves a sniff.

Thought Backe should have matched Novak bringing in a couple of starters after the Philly second half starters scored. Instead more reserves held up and even challenged for the third goal. Backe was right I was wrong.

Chinn looked like a man amongst boys against the ghastly Philly back line, I guess the center backs particularly.

Tchani has skills. Like Chinn he just has to figure out how they translate to MLS game action. Needs to give the ball up when he's in space and defenders are collapsing.

Garcia looked like a whirling dervish on the right, impressed.

    Sutton looked rusty.

Albright a couple of times took balls in the air and instead of just launching them over the sideline made headers to open space where he tried to retrieve the ball himself. He essentially headed the ball to himself to maintain possession, plenty impressed.

Stammler looked solid. The official Stammler v Robinson starter battle is on.

Nielson moved into the middle a couple of times and was effective.

If the team gets Henry and a midfield general there's no telling what the ripple effect will be on the lineup. Lindpere could be on the left or holding. Nielson could be on the left or right, Kandji too. I hope if these historic deals are taking place that Backe is even now starting to think about the transition period.

The ESC showed well even got a couple of Let's Go Metro/Red Bulls chants going that the rest of the crowd (closer to 2,000 IMHO) followed. Of course the rest of the crowd chanted Red Bulls. It lost a little of its power because of the dual name chanting thing. Our cross to bear.
