Whoa. good find. I think that would be good for some of the guys on this team. Harkes is a good guy, and he was a winner in MLS ........ captain of the Nats. I would love to see him back with the organization. This is really beginning to look like a whole different ballgame in DC.

This Harkes coaching thing did surface somewhere last week so it's not totally surprising. I remember reading a post or two expressing reservations about this, speculating that Harkes might undermine Nowak in the long run and become head coach himself. Possible, but not likely IMO. I actually believe that Harkesey is not an egomaniac and that he'd like to try coaching and that he does care about DCU and the game. I also think he has a lot of knowledge to impart. Finally I (and every other sane MLS player) deeply respects Nowak and will follow his orders.

    Offer him a job.

The Harkes item was in The Post last weekend. Ussocceruk.com picked up on it yesterday and attributed the initial item to The Post.

This is something that I would like to see. I think Harkes has a lot to offer. I agree with Ursula, offer him a job.

I just worry about Sean Wheelock if Harkes leaves FSW for a job at United.

Hey, maybe Ray Hudson could take his place. I respect Harkes and his accomplishments, but that show definitely needs an injection of more personality.

Hmmm...I liked John as a player, but his ego is Super-Sized. I'd be concerned about his ability to play well with others.

You'd have to think that after his humbling years in New England and Columbus, his ego's probably been knocked down a peg or two. God knows it won't hurt having someone on the staff who can teach the youngsters how to strike a dead ball.

While I think this is a great idea, John's gonna really miss those cameras.

I like the idea of Harkes overseeing the Youth Program. Usually in college football, a coach with pro experience lands the big recruits because he knows how to get to the big-time. I saw how UVA does it with Al Groh (former head coach of the Jets). Having someone who has the credentials with a name like Harkes, could bring young players into our younger teams.

Harkes was captain of the US National Team, is American born, played locally (Virginia), has MLS Cup Championships, was a big part of DC United, played under Arena, etc so..........

Given Nowak and Harkes have about the same amount of coaching experience (zero), what is it about Nowak that makes him more qualified to head coach this team than Harkes??

Anyways, would be great to see Harkes a part of DC United again.

    Harksie

I'd like to see Harkes give it a shot. As far as ego goes, any other United coaches with big egos come to mind?

As far as MLS Wrap goes, I thought the other guy who subbed for Harkes for a few weeks last year was much better. Harkes had a tendency to slip into platitudes.

I'd love to see Harksie get into coaching, and I think this sounds like a great way. I also think Hudson would be a natural for the broadcast booth, whether it be on FSW, MLS's ESPN2 team, or even ABC.

Harkes has always been a complimentary player, never "the man". By all press accounts he's self centered. Other than his "fans", have you ever heard of him leading a team? He was a veteran with DC, played a role and helped the team win a championship. He wasn't Marco or Nowak. I'm not that impressed with what I've heard about his character. And character, IMHO, is essential to lead a team. Nowak has it. Let him do PR.

I vote for Chris Sullivan to again take Harkes seat on MLS Wrap. Ray is fun to listen to, but I'd prefer him as a color guy. Wrap needs analysis, not witty one liners.

I can't see Wheelock making those goo-goo eyes at Hudson.

But we should have known when during the draft and watching Harkes and Wheelock during the comercial breaks, we never once saw the two lip lock! Not once! They barely even looked at each other! Obviously those two are on the outs and Harksey is drowning his sorrows by pouring himself into working for DCU.

Maybe Ray has already been the other man between Sean and Johnny.....

USsoccerUK.com is reporting that John Harkes is set to "take up the role of Director of Youth Development" and "will be confirmed into his new role by DC United within the next 24 hours, following talks over the past few weeks."
