well you can leave it out of any "attendance" equation because it is not a "resident" team sport that has a home facility and a regular schedule of games/events to attend. the most events any one site has is two per year. but from somebody who used to live near CMS in Concord, NC ... those few events are very very very well attended by a vast horde of .... i will refrain from any derogatory and humourous monikers and just call them fans. but as far as general sports overall popularity nascar is definitely in the equation and higher than NHL or MLS.
The reason I left it out is because I don't consider it a team sport with the teams based in a single city that play teams from other cities. I left golf out for the same reason. One NASCAR event in a city each year is not comparable to a season of home games. I'm sure there are fans that travel to the races in the different cities - but it simply isn't the same as having a team based in your city that you have season tickets to. I recognize you disagree with me, that's fine. I just don't consider it in the same category as the sports I listed. But, in reality, it doesn't alter the point I was making.
YouTube -The PATH to Red Bull Arenal I meant to include this when the Chicago Fire ad was posted a few weeks back. This ad has been showing on FSC a lot in Buffalo, not sure if it's being nationally bought.. I really think this is an extremely effective ad and wonder if it's being shown a lot in NYC? I apologize, it didn't show up in the post. (used a different streaming feed as a quote to see how).. Will see if I can figure this out.
Pretty awesome commercial, but it's kinda sad how the dude is traveling to the game all alone and appears to be the only one there when he arrives. I realize they wanted to make it realistic, but that's a little too realistic!
It was a bad weather match, and the second home game in a row, and opposition was weak for an afternoon encounter. Besides, they did not advertise this match too well and, since no one in the NY/NJ area has a computer, it was not well known that there was a match that day. The next commercial will be fuller
So, according to the hard work at MLSD (rep given), the Dynamo are besting their average from last year? Yeah, move Houston. We're clearly a drain on the league. OG is a troll and an idiot...dangerous combination
Where did he say "move 'em"? What I got from his post is that he was disapointed with a crowd of under 15k at that match and asked people closer to the scene for some thoughts/explanations....I think, now that he got those, he has stated that he now understands....he is still not impressed by the crowd but understands why it might have happened. Is that sort of discussion not valid?
I think the utter disgust and the huge assumptions are what gets to me (and others). So long as our attendance remains in the black, does anyone really care? We're keeping up our end of the bargain (attendance wise) and are right where we usually are...middle of the pack (give or take). What's so surprising about these numbers?
You would have to ask him, but what I got out of his questioning was a similar feeling I have about NY/NJ...on the one hand it is ok to say "after two matches they are averaging 19k which is good"....on the other hand I wonder (in a non-insulting manner) why they can't do better.....that is what I got from OG's questioning of Houston's crowd yesterday.
I see what you are saying but OG is so all over the board that his comments are hard to take in stride. Like someone mentioned earlier he is overly optimistic one week and then the exact opposite the next. It can get a little tiresome.
I just find that questioning low(er) attendance is sometimes taken way too personally......people need to understand that it is ok to discuss the subject without getting all defensive. As an example, I am not a baseball fan at all but i find it a very interesting discussion point on what has happened to baseball attendance here in Toronto. I don't take it as an insult when someone says "how can the 5th largest metro area in North America get 10k out to a ball game in April when the team has a winning record and a nearby rival is in town"....they are good discussion points not to be taken as "my city is better than your city" or anything of the sort.
New york's franchise is going to take a little time to rebuild it's fanbase and for its fans to get accustomed to a new location and a team that is half decent (even if they should have lost last night). I'm really pleased that the Red Bull Arena can look so good on Television even while half empty. That's a nice design for a team that has historical attendance struggles. Next week they play a local rival and that ticket is included in multiple ticket packages they have been selling. If they draw closer to 20k next week I think we'll all have to feel good about where the New York franchise is heading. I wonder if there is a demonstratable second home game effect in new stadiums. I recall when the HDC opened, it sold out it's first game but it's second game was about 17k. I remember getting a little panicky. It all worked out. It will at RBA as well.
Another perspective on the Portland Timbers attendance. http://www.prostamerika.com/2010/04...w-as-local-clubs-begin-farewell-season-22974/
based on the glimpses of the stands during the broadcast worse than an FCD home game ... or a NYRB home game vs. FCD
From observation.....it will be difficult to believe an over 10k number. The seats behind one net are mostly full....there are people standing in the other end....the side that is visible is mostly (by far) empty (you can read the Colorado in the seats very clealry)...of course we can't see the camera side so that could be full
yeah. looking at the crowd wide shots on the feed the stadium looks like a ghost town ... the left sideline is practically empty.
