The Union logo is indeed, quite nice. I liked when it was released and they had that poster thing pointing out and explaining all the different elements.
Okay, kuhns, I want to bury the hatchet (well, I'm not really angry, so it isn't really a hatchet - maybe a foamy finger in silver and purple). My counterpoint was this though: if it is all about tradition and history (and I am not saying it shouldn't be: for the same reasons as you, I want vancouver to be the Whitecaps, etc.) then why not go back to the rainbow on the uniform? Since no one seems to want to rainbow back, which was a change, why be so opposed to the darker blue, or yellow? As a fan of the Caps, if they added gold or silver or yellow to the traditional colors of two blues and white, it wouldn't bother me that much. For the record, I am actually one of the few people who actually liked the rainbow jerseys, I just thought the version you got stuck with the first couple years (red and orange stripes, wasn't it?) looked horrible. A band of green, red, and yellow might have worked. Silver and purple foamy finger buried.
Re: Anyone think Kansas City will re branded once they move into new stadiums next year? You mean your not in Kansas any more? I don't mind anything about the darn badge or color. The badge is not bad to look at but not inspirational as far as design. It will become what ever the team becomes as far as the badge and what it represents on the field; if they are kick ass team then the name will be feared even if it's a girls name like Sue or Chelsea. I like The Crew, I might be weired but it is very original and THE is not strange as it is: THE CREW.
Uh, something was clearly lost in translation here such as where I said that I really like the Wizards name and feel that the team should retain it, as well as the blue color, even if they go through some mild rebranding. My point was not addressed to diehard Wizards fans who love the name (I'm generally on their side in this debate), but to all the mindless Eurosnobs around here who if had their way would change the team's name to CSKA Olympique Real Bayern Lokomotiv Atletico Kansas City United Rangers F.C. Grasshopper 1996. I'm quite on record as saying how much I like such unique nicknames as Galaxy, Wizards, Crew, Rapids, and, yes, Burn. The worse names in MLS are the Euro derivative names, especially the really unimaginative ones that include F.C. in their name. In NA, we call it soccer.
Because at this point there is 10 years worth of history in the blue jersey (in whatever shade you want to look at), there's been tradition and history built up that way, the rainbow uniforms were only 4 years of the teams history at this point. There is now over double the history with the blue than there was with the rainbow jerseys. I'm not opposed to the darker blue or yellow, I just don't want either one made more prominent than the main blue. The team is developing an identity with blue, you have people outside the Cauldron wearing blue to the games, don't change it up and start from square one with a completely different color as it took a little while to recover after we changed to the darker blue only a few years ago.
Not wishing to sound homophobic, but on the subject of KC having a rainbow on the uniform, and bearing in mind that a good number of people in the US say soccer's a pansy sport; does the rainbow have cultural connotations in the US? The reason I ask is that in the UK the rainbow is a gay symbol. In the famously gay town of Brighton, gay pubs and other establishments show their gay friendliness by having rainbows above the door. I've got nothing against gay people myself, just don't want to give Jim Rome and his mates any more ammunition.
yeah. on top of naming yourself after/from a judy garland movie a rainbow motif in your badge seems like a bit much.
I have heard some people call us City before and I wasn't referring to anybody calling us Kansas City City. Your point is understood, and no we are not in Europe, so don't call us City because our city actually already has the word City in it. Simply put, our name is Kansas City....not Kansas (which is a state)....not City (which is a stupid nickname for a team IMO). If you have trouble with it, just call us KC for short.
The notion of "soccer as a pansy sport" was well entrenched before gay culture hijacked the "rainbow". It doesn't help matters with you filthy euros falling to the ground at the slightest touch and writhing around like you're going into shock. Thanks for the info. *crosses Brighton off the itinerary* If Jim Rome or any other semi-national media member made a comment about soccer being "gay", they'd be out of a job by the end of their show and doing AM news updates. IIRC, they were originally called "The Wiz" and got sued for that.
good thing too. as questionable as lifting your name from a judy garland movie might be lifting your name from the Michael Jackson version of the same movie, given his penchant for controversy (even as a corpse), would easily have been worse so i would consider the lawsuit a blessing in disguise...like maybe a long flowing bluish robe with stars and a pointy hat and a long grey beard with a wand type disguise.
Do you even know what company it was that forced the Wizards to change their name? Hint: It wasn't a movie.
Did you know that no matter who sued them over using the name Wiz my statement about dodging the bullet of being associated with Michael Jackson and his musical version of The Wizard of Oz (which is what most people think of when you say The Wiz) is a fortunate accident of said lawsuit. Hint: It is.
You know what would be an awesome name for Kansas City: The Chiefs. There's no professional football team with that name.
Just my two cents, but why would KC change colors? They're the only team in the league that uses a royal-esque blue other than Seattle, FC Dallas and San Jose, but rave green, red and black are more pronounced in those teams, respectively. Chivas, NYRB, Colorado, LA, RSL, New England, and Philly use either a navy blue or sky blue. I have no problem identifying KC by their uniforms. It is distinct from the others so why change it? Even if Montreal and Vancouver stick with their navy blue colors once they enter the league, it will up to them to create an identifiable brand that's somewhat unique within the league.
i'd actually like to see them go with a purple as the main color and redo the logo. Vikings and Rockies among the few teams I can think of with a purple. Saprissa in Costa Rica the only soccer team that comes do mind with a purple.
I agree. As MLS expands hopefully they stick with traditional North American names and don't keep borrowing the names of the most famous clubs in the world. I can't believe Garber even tried to get Seattle to names themselves, FC, Republic, or Union. That's just stupid. Hopefully Portland remains the Timbers.
Purple's a no-go. K-State is predominantly purple and many in the KC area would associate the purple to that - at least I could see it happening. While blue is a part of KU's colors, I think that the absence of red is important there. The Royals having blue is convenient for the Wizards, esp. since the Royals logo is simply KC. As per re-branding the team, it seems to me that it would be a pretty total loss. The upside of re-branding would be the 'newness' of the new name/team, but that would be greatly outweighed by the confusion a change would create ("XYZ? I'd rather go to a Wizards game. When are they finishing that stadium for the Wizards anyway?"). The best you could hope for is to find a name which the city identified with _so_ much that it became a talking point and whatnot. Good luck figuring that out... As per Montreal, I think they have a much better chance of re-branding and making some changes. Technically they'll be an entirely new team, right? Granted, it still makes more sense to maintain the current branding, but at least there are reasons for them to make a change.
If by rebrand you mean same blue kit and a new crest logo that would be cool by me. After 15 years I don't see any need to rename the team. It would be akward to do so. FCD was a rebrand of an already valueless brand. I can't see how re branding is going to put any more bums in seats than a nice shiny stadium. I would be more than happy with a retro style template kit with a white collar and strings with a sponsor like chase or something across the front. Not rebranding is thanking the fans that you have had for 15 years. Increasing activation is as important as bring in new fans.
I do like when multiple teams in a city share a palette like Pittsburgh for example. Especially when that are classic in terms of color and design.
I second that notion. There are not many teams that can rock the full bore Royal blue. Usually it ends up with white shorts so I consider them to have a distinct look, which is hard as hell to have when there a hundreds of uni's running around my head. Besides its a regional thing too, your rivals all have clashing colors. All I can think of is how the north west teams are all going to be official members of the Hartford Whalers fan club next year.
I was looking at the new Liverpool uniform on the front page of BigSoccer right now and I thought if turned royal blue that would make a really nice Wizards Jersey for next season. Just a thought.
