Great list Carlos. Too bad you can't list heart, pride and love of the team and its fans up there.

    Marco #1!!!

Thanks, Chico. Your good suggestions could certainly be listed under "intangibles".

I normally don't write long posts like the above, but sometime it is important to rebut a troll - Particularly if he/she has a history of such trouble-making posts.

    Glad he's gone.

Why have a one year moratorium when Etcheverry stopped playing in 2000?

Your club, Convey, and all involved instantly got better once Etcheverry's contract ended.

    Cheers!

Good list; but I'd take this one off and put Chico's comment in its place.

Leading a bad team that could not score goals in scoring is really no accomplishment, especially when (i) most of your goals stem from you being the designated penalty kick taker, (ii) you earned almost none of those kicks yourself, (iii) your need to possess the ball and slow the run of play was arguably one of the main reasons nobody scored in the run of play.

Marco was a great player for DCU for 4 years, and a fairly mediocre to bad one for 2-4.

He should eventually be in the ring, he should immediately be added to the "Harkes banner", and his number should get a one year moratorium. But no permanent retirement of the #10 for a 4-year span of brilliance followed by multiple seasons of mediocrity.

    Re: Retire Marcos Number Ten

I thought we hashed this out months ago...you don't retire numbers in soccer. Almost everybody here has given ample reasoning for why that is (future legends, ridiculous numbering, etc.). Let's please put this to rest. Put Marco in the Ring. I've never been his biggest fan but he did earn a place there so by all means put him in the ring and buy him a house if you want, but I want to see the #10 (all all the numbers) on the field where they belong and not in the rafters.

I have made this point before on this board and I will make it again: you don't retire a number in soccer - especially #1-11.

Maybe there won't be another 7 in denver or a 23 in chicago - but there will definitely be quite a few great 10's at DCU and any other soccer team in the world for that matter.

Etcheverry was a great 10, but he did not "define" it.

Maradona defined it, Pele definened it, etc. etc...

Except for the Argentine men's national team - unless you want to count third choice goalkeepers.

Marco defined it for our team, which is what I'm referring to.

First of all, posts split, threads merged.

As I said earlier in this thread, I believe that kind of thinking is an insult to the future of this team. As long as this team's future is not yet written nothing should ever be thought defined. Again, I look forward to seeing a long line of #10s. I hope they make us and Etcheverry proud.

He's the only #10 we've ever had. I would hope that he defined it...

I agree with the one-year moratorium on the number, but let future players have an opportunity of living up to, if not surpassing, Etch's greatness.

    Marco: Legend, Adu: Joke

I am the Biggest Marco Etcheverry Fan. I met him when I was about 12 in Bolivia with the national team(who in turn invited me to practice)...anyway I am the biggest fan. Ive played since I was 3 and ever since seeing him play..Ive dedicated my life to playing in his honor...when i was about 14 I attended Tahuichi Academy In Bolivia just like Marco..and there I played against his brother...Ive tryed everything possible toget my chance to play pro and I did. I played with the team in Bolivia named Wilstermann..I just never signed with them..About Retiring Marco's Jersey I think they should retire his jersey..and put him in the ring of fame..and add a banner in RFK for him..he pulled D.C. United from nothing to Everything him and Jamie Moreno also who Ive followed in his footseps..They are the MLS Pioneers and the biggest players to ever start a Major Soccer League in America. I think you should retire his Jersey because no one else deserves even the chance to step into attempting to fufill Marco's Career...he pulled a Nationals team weight while leading the MLS when it first started...He is a legend of soccer in America. Give Marco the honor of knowing that know one can fulfill his career...You cant be seriously thinking about giving his jersey to this Freddy Adu character...he is 14 he should even be able to play in the MLS...there is no way he can compete with the players of the MLS...why did D.C. waste thier money on such a poor choice player. Maybe he has skill but..there is no way in hell he can pull weight of any proffesional player..this has seriously got to be some joke of the MLS and U.S.A. national team. I will enjoy laughing my ass off when this Adu character destroys the D.C. United team and everything Marco and Jaime created for D.C. united...How on earth can you seriously think a no name player like him can pull that weight...He has the nerve to think he is the next Pele' the standard for soccer players everywhere...Freddy Adu couldnt beat me in soccer and you except this no name..fake football player to make a good impression...D.C. Uniteds reign is over...it was over whenn they traded Moreno and now that Marco retired...its useless to have this club anymore...I would be surprised if D.C. United ranks higher than last place ever again...what a poor publicity stunt. If you wanted a high caliber player...I dont mean to promote myself but look up on my name (Mario Campero) and see the things I have acomplished..then let this Adu character play me on a game and I will show you what a poor decision you have made. Any attempt in promoting soccer in America has been just shot thanks to this stunt. FREEDY ADU IS A JOKE!!

    Re: Marco: Legend, Adu: Joke

My, aren't you a bitter person!

I don't know, maybe you haven't been watching or paying attention lately. Freddy Adu has never said (as far as I know) that he will be the next Pele. The soccer-ignorant American media has said this. And yes, it was somewhat of a publicity stunt to get Americans interested in soccer.

However, Freddy has grown tremendously in the past several weeks. He started the season very slowly, as should have been expected. He hit some rough spots towards the middle of the season, as should have been expected. Now he is starting to show more flashes of the reason why he was signed. He is not up to Marco's standards or ability yet and I seriously doubt anyone thought that he might be at this point in his career. But DC United supporters have noticed the value he is bringing to the team. United, overall, are looking more and more like a team that can attack and compete with everyone week after week. Not entirely because of Freddy, but he has contributed a great deal to the recent run of much better attacking form.

So, in conclusion, thanks, but no thanks, for your "insight". Oh, and by the way, DC did trade Moreno but he is back with the team and in my mind has been the team's MVP this season. He is leading the team in scoring and his leadership is unquestioned.

Last I saw Adu was wearing #9.....And the rest of your post???.....Leads me to wonder if your ""So much better""...then Adu......on the field....but sounds like you dont match his class and team player attitude off the field....so you are what we would call a $hit-sucker!

Oh, and one more thing. Freddy Adu and Marco Etchevery are 2 very different types of players. I think it is somewhat ridiculous to compare the two of them.
