Anyone else catch the match? I continue to believe that the future of the USMNT for the next 10 years will ride on Jozy Altidore's progress and success. At least as much any TEAM's success rides on one player.

The kid just keeps getting better. Jozy used to be marked by one person with another defender positioned to strip him of the ball once he settled the long pass. Jozy learned to beat that so he is now marked by 2 defenders full time. What an advantage to have!

In last weekend Fulham match he beat three defenders in one play. The usual tow who were marking him appeared to have pinned Jozy to the sideline. Jozy quickly turned back up field taking the two defenders with him while a teammate speed past him who he calmly back heeled a 5 yard pass. The defender who was guarding his teammate got caught up in the traffic freeing his teammate open with nothing but air to beat for 30 yards.

That demonstrated finesse, awareness and skill all at once. Add that to his strength that earned a PK and several cards early in the match, Jozy was the man. Demps was MIA IMO in the match.

Yes Jozy has to work double or triple covered at Hull, we would assume that this type of thing would help his development. But at the same time lets look at the down side, he has had almost no time/experience working in open space yet.

Why does this have to be a Jozy vs Dempsey thing?

He drew a ton of fouls (including 3 yellows) and a penalty. Drove some Fulham fans I know bonkers with what they saw as a tendency to go down at the slightest touch. I don't agree....I thought at least 2 of the yellows and several of the freekicks were legit calls, but I will say he's gaining a reputation.

I thought he played well and gave Fulham fits, though. He'll learn to anticipate passes and ricochets better to get into position for shots...I know Hull City is a bad team (better with Bullard, though), but one thing Jozy is lacking is getting more and better shots on goal. His time in the PL will do wonders for his confidence and, hopefully, make him an adept scorer for the Nats. At least, that's the hope.

I unfortunately missed this match, but this has matched what I've seen from Altidore at Hull City the last time I caught him. He has an amazing knack for drawing fouls.

If he doesn't develop into our best striker in 50 years, it's looking like he'll at least develop into a great dirty work man and draw some set pieces. Not as good as being an excellent goal scorer but a very good trait to have. Also he's new to everyone outside of a few BS American posters so no one can claim he's getting favoritism calls either. He's legitimately drawing them.

For this skill alone I believe Hull should be playing him as much as they can... but he is constantly yanked and even not played. I hope this just has something to do with him being a loan player and not an owned player for them though, if they get regulated as is highly possible there will be tough decisions to be made one of which is the extremely like scenerio that Jozy won't be back for Hull.

Also, one possibilty that I've been dreaming of... is England getting frustrated by not scoring on the USA then Jozy gets under England's skin with his foul drawing ability and we get a great set piece in the World Cup to at least etch a loss on only one goal.

He may be doing great at Hull.........but he ain't scoring goals.

And for the USMNT, he needs to score goals.

I also think Jozy has a great future. The sky's the limit. But is he good enough right now to lead us deep into the World Cup? Due to our lack of forwards, he's gotta perform at a high level in South Africa for us to suceed. It's pretty easy for good coaches to see how to stop the USMNT. Stop Donovan and Dempsey. Make somebody else beat you................

I think this is a very likely scenario. I see something like 2-1 where we score late in the match after Jozy gets fouled by a frustrated back line. The only other part is that the officiating in the WC will be different than Jozy is used to in England...depending on the referees of course. I'd hate to see him draw a second yellow for diving after he's gotten his first for scoring a golazo and ripping his shirt off :D

Obviously we want a tie but I'll feel that a one goal loss is not horrible. As far as Jozy v. Dempsey, well, I'm glad we have both of them in the EPL and in the WC. Both excellent players with completely different playing styles and qualities.

I wonder how many goals Jozy and Dempsey would be able to score as a tandem. It's kinda funny, people will look at Jozy's huge size, but most of his goals have come from powerful shots on the ground, while teams may think Dempsey will be playing behind Jozy all the time as the creative guy, but Dempsey is very good at headers and can draw some good fouls with his quick feet. It could be a very fruitful thing if Bob ever tried it.

Personally I think the only American forward who can cause enough trouble against England is Mr. Charlie Davies (in top form, obviously). We can only hope that'll happen.

I found it interesting that on Hull corners, it was Dempsey vs Altidore. Anyone else notice that Dempsey was marking him on corners?

Yeah I did as well and that was why I put V in the header. Then I realized as someone else pointed out their games are very different. However Jozy contributed far more to Hulls victory then Demps did for his side's chances.

    I should have put a "&" not a V.

As far as going Jozy down more easily, until most refs call the fouls evenly for the big guys, the big guys only defense unfortunately is to play like an Italian.

Imo, the problem w/ this is that Jozy is strong/fast/skilled enough to get in on goal if he's single-marked. Can he finish? Who knows - he doesn't get many chances at Hull. But, England (or whomever) will have to give Jozy a lot of attention, or he's going to be one v. one against the keeper more than once in a game. He'll be drawing a lot of contact in the box - but will the ref call PK's on Terry, Rio, et al.?

My hope for Jozy is that he has enough confidence to take shots that he appeared to be passing off in the CC. Looked like he would have been well-served to have been a little more selfish in that tournament.

I re-watched the last 30 minutes or so of U.S. v. Holland. One of the commentators (JP, I guess) noted that Holland was basically doubling Jozy. And, that certainly appeared to be the case.

something he's done quite well for the US already. Not saying he's the next biggest thing since sliced bread, but pointing out that for the US, he's done quite well for himself

Jozy is 2x every match now. Everton still 2x after the match was basically over. Jozy is the real deal and if opponents do not recognize that Jozy team will posses the ball DEEP in the opponents territory a lot.

It is not Barca style, more Jozy style. Right now that is brute force. Jozy's technical skills are coming along very well; glad he is an American. Stay healthy Jozy!
