...would be the hottest ticket in town, I kid you not. I know this has been discussed ad nauseum and yeah they had a nice crowd going but just think of the possibilities if this team were the Cosmos! It's all marketing and name recognition. Why do you think there's so many remakes and sequels in Hollywood these days.? It's a down economy everybody's goin' with their sure fire guns.
Yeah your right. Theres no way RBA could have been electric tonight and packed right? It was dead. (sarcasm intended in case your as slow as i think u are)
Why is everyone so hung up on the Cosmos name? RBNY has absolutely no connection to that old team besides the city. And most fans under 35 would not remember a thing about the Cosmos.
Another rebrand would look amateurish, plus Red Bull have pumped far too much money and effort into the team this past couple of years to want to give up the team name. Furthermore, Cosmos were a different kind of animal than could exist in MLS under the current rules. Cosmos were about buying up (admittedly aging) superstars. Almost a Globetrotters of soccer. NYRB isn't like that and happily for the sustainability of the league neither is MLS. a new Cosmos would have Beckham, Angel, McBride.....all the league's DP's in fact, in the same team. To call NYRB the Cosmos would be like getting a Ford Escort, painting it red, putting a Ferrari decal on it and saying you had a Testarossa.
The Club and name "Red Bull New York" is far cooler than The New York Cosmos could ever be- I don't care who played for them. It's time to let go of the past.. What happened the last two weekends in Harrison is the future, and though it may be a slow grow, that future looks bright.
Seattle had thousands on the season ticket waiting list before the name was even chosen. And I don't see San Jose breaking any attendance records. To the original poster, if fans are unwilling to support their local team due to a team name then I don't want them as fans. It means they are flakey people who will turn against your team at the drop of a dime if something bad happens.
+1, just like rebranding to the Tornados will not help the FC Dallas much And as much as I would like the Cosmos to make a come back, I respect the millions and millions of dollars Red Bull spent on the team and the stadium, so I understand they want all the publicity they can get
In 95 and 96, MLS was very anti NASL We could have had the LA Aztecs, Washington Dips, Cosmos, SJ Earthquakes, Tampa Bay Rowdies, Dallas Tornados, etc...
And the ticket would have been even hotter (and I would have scalped it for thousands) had Chicago been called the "Sting."
I think the energy drink should drop their drink named stupidity and that will sure as hell get me to go to the harrison stadium and support the rebranded team....so as long as its a proper image just like i wont support a energy drink named team i wont support a team named after a Car or a Computer software or if it was Playstation NY FC....... The cosmos name was on the table since day 1 charlie wanted it for the metros how ever pepe pinton has a SHIT attitude about the league and actually wanted to LEASE the name for some crazy ass dollar amount number...... so Charlie and the owners went a different way and Metrostars came to be... This is what charlie told me a long long time ago in a mls galaxy far far away......... the second time Metro wanted to simply borrow the name for 1 GAME pepe pinton again said no.... the metros wanted to play in a tribute to the NASL and NY COSMOS in cosmos gear 1 game but were unable to do so......the logo was not used that day.... How ever Metros looked pretty dapper in the all white nike uniforms with the original metro logo crest on the jersey.........pepe could have been a nice guy and let metro do it for 1 ********ing game but did not allow it... finally pepe pinton has sold, not to long ago the Cosmos Logo media rights archive such as video print and photo rights over to a british lord named Paul Kemsley.....its kemsley who owns the rights to the image and name and archives... Pepe did secure himself the right to continue to use the name Cosmos and the last cosmos logo for his camps which are quite a buisness venture for pepe... the trophies and all the silvareware is unkown if that will transfer over to kemley or if all those trophies plaques and so on will remain with pepe... i also think paul while owner of every thing cosmos may not own the cosmos logo that pepe uses.... paul might be owner of the original New York Cosmos Logo... but who knows right now thats the feeling I get after seeing the paint job in the Cosmos new office in Soho........ Energy drink can not name their team cosmos cause that image and name does not belong to them.... and while i would welcome and as a matter of fact WISH that the local team was named some thing else rather than a drink... Red Bull want nothing to do with a name change or any thing else they want their brand for the teams name and thats the end of the story............there was a really good artical about why the drink does things the way they do..... in the end you could have all the fans screaming they want a cosmos look or any new look for that matter, but the drink aint going to change what THEY FEEL LIKE DOING........they want their brand as the full image of the team and that is the end of the story.......... you can tell the drink a cosmos name would be a better way to sell the team but thats going to fall on deaf austrian ears.... the drink while with an unacceptable image has done some thing nice that has re energized NJ about a team the stadium the soccer 1st mentality and the stadium treatment of fans is some thing that is going to get people to accept their image even if deep down inside they may dislike it..(except for me I'm stubborn and want no part in that image i think is wrong...) they aint changing the name and you have to accept that and it comes down to each individual person at the end if they choose to support the brand or choose not to..... to those that have accepted it are having a killer time in harrison to those that dont well i guess they wait for an alternative to pop up, support a LI second division team or pick another MLS side or do what ever floats their boat.....
They were a team in the old North American Soccer League. In 1975 they signed Pele which was a HUGE deal in world soccer, and quite important in american sports at the time. They eventually started signing a bunch of other players as well, most notably Giorgio Chinaglia, Franz Beckenbauer, and Carlos Alberto. In 1984 they folded with the rest of the NASL. this freaking thread is an epic fail. jesus everyone just needs to STFU about the cosmos. THEY'RE DEAD.
While we're at it, we should bring back the offside lines, the shootout and all the other stupid crap that the NASL did back in the day. Then maybe we could be as successful as the NASL and burn out in a few years! YAY!
And those thousands also overwhelmingly voted to keep the name Sounders. Try as MLS might, the legacy of the NASL isn't going away anytime soon, nor should it. It still is the golden age of US and Canadian soccer. The MLS has yet to get that type of buzz.
