Any chance of a brief synopsis for those of us who are Spanish language challenged?

He says though he knows he's not the player he was in 93,but he still feels he has the heart and enough talent to help the team move forward. (They lost the apertura, clausura and Copa SudAmerica qualifiers to The Strongest their bitter rivals)

He wanted to thank the team that gave him his real first shot. He says they are a real class operation (They are, they have all the money) and he wants to give it his all.

Good Luck Marco, watch out for that Tiger.

Nice to see DC United's website on the ball as usual... Greatest player in team history departs and no one bothers to mention it.

If this league gets any dumpier they should start advertising for landscaping companies. Right now its so f-ing BUSH LEAGUE.

    WAY TO GO DC UNITED.

How lame indeed. DCU really needs to do better than this.

As I implied earlier, this is a horrible way to find out about this. How old is this story? Is it possible that they are working on the story for DCU's site right now............... oh, what the heck. you guys are right. this should be on the DC United site. I guess the 2 drunken teenagers who are responsible for the upkeep of dcunited.com have gone home for curfew. :(

The website that the article appeared is dated today.

If there is no tribute match, United will lose alot of face to me.
I have been vocal in saying Marco's time is done here, but that doesnt mean I want to see him leave disrespected and dumped.
Marco led United through some great times, I am just sorry I didnt get to see him play in his prime.

There simply MUST be a tribute match, because his is the most important name to be added to the Ring of Fame (or whatever our list of famous names is that we started with Harkes last season). My only regret was that he wasn't the first name on the list. Harkes deserves to be on the list as well, and he was our first captain, but Marco IS DC United.

Best of luck to Marco. Best wishes for Marco leading Bolivar to great things. Also, I would definitely hope that when Marco is done playing (whenever that is), that he comes back to DC and helps United in some capacity.

Congrats Bolivar, and Marco, thank you for your class, skill and achievement. To me, you will always be DC United's defining player.

This has been a long time in the offing, but it really should have been done in a better manner than this.

Best of luck to Marco in all of his future endeavors.

Point taken but the truth is DC United should be on top of this and they aren't.

Exhibit A: Payne should not have been dropping bull$hit comments that Marco was 95% gone. The team should have been firm while also planning a fitting end to his career here. We should not learn of his leaving via a Bolivian newspaper!

You would think after the Diaz Arce fiasco this team would have learned something about f-ing public relations. And while I am not saying the same will happen in Marco's case (simply if for no other reason then the fact that there are many less Bolivians locally...) they should realize the ingratitude DC United is seemingly putting on display right now.

Spot on Owen. DC should have at least put up some sort of "fond farewell" on its website. Not only was he the face of our club for 8 seasons, he was one of the players that gave the entire league credibility.

    Best of luck El Diablo.

As it stands now [less than a day on] there's no official statement from DC United, but that could be because Marco hasn't told them. Of course comments coming out of the front office have leaned towards the inevitablity of Marco's departure -- there's no arguing against that, but I bet they want to give him a proper send off.

Stinks for it to happen this way, but let's not hang anybody before it's time to do so.

It's a Sunday AND everyone is at the combine.

Plus, what exactly do you expect DC United to say? It's a really awkward position for the team. They've basically told the greatest DC United player ever that he's no longer wanted at the club. The said that despite the fact that Etch wanted to come back to the club. The whole situation is unseemly.

If I were in the DC United front office I wouldn't want to say anything either. Maybe next year when things calm down some sort of tribute match can be arranged but right now EVERYONE - DC United and Etcheverry - just look bad.

The shame is that it had to come to this and for that Etcheverry does hold partial responsibility. This isn't just DC United's fault. Etch holds some blame here.

If you want to go out gracefully you've got to know when to make your exit. He didn't. That's part of the reason we've got this situation now. Etch didn't know when to stop. He didn't know when to call it quits. He pushed and pushed and he never gave anyone the chance to say an appropriate goodbye or to honor his contribution to the club in a fitting manner.

That Etcheverry refused to give the fans or the club the chance to do those things, I think, reflects badly on him.

    Think people . . . .

Would an active player want a tribute match? Also, would an owner of a club allow a recently signed player to participate in a tribute match? Didn't it take DCUnited 3 years after he left the team to finally acknowledge his contribution to the team.

Finally, because Etch was out of contract with the league, he was allowed to talk with other clubs without letting DCUnited know about it. One reason why we know he was talking with clubs in the Middle East, as reported after the end of the season, was because he was still under contract and they were required to ask permission of the league/club. I have a feeling this caught DCUnited by surprise.

    I totally agree

How about DC United getting excited about the contributions Etcheverry has made, rather than leave one of the greatest players in MLS history, Diablo, just hanging/twisting in the wind until some Chicago Fire guy Nowak decides he doesn't want him

Thanks to El Diablo, he just may be one of my MLS favorite players of all time. I felt privileged to get to see such a tremendous player play soccer here in the DC area.
