Surprised I did not see this thread before. If anyone has questions about Nepali football feel free to ask. Nepali soccer is really getting better these days. A few years back the Nepal FA opened a youth academy and the fruits are paying off. Half the Nepal SAFF Cup side consists of players that came through the youth academy. Club football is really on the rise too. We never had a proper league before - just micro tournaments scattered throughout the year. Now we have a 15 team first division with a double round robin format. The standard of play is quite low, but players are now getting a chance to train and play on a regular basis. It's wierd, in South Asia Nepalese people are considered to be the best footballers. All the elite Indian boarding schools are loaded with Nepali players, but for some reason it does not translate into club or national team success. Part of the reason is families tend to discourage their kids to play football after high school, so there is a big talent drain. Now that Nepali clubs are starting to pay decent wages, hopefully that trend will end. By the way if you guys are looking to support a Nepali side Machhindra FC (www.mfcnepal.com) is it!

KUALA LUMPUR: The AFC President's Cup and Challenge Cup Organising Committee, chaired by Ganesh Thapa, decided to allot the opening ceremony of the maiden AFC Challenge Cup to Bangladesh at its meeting here on Monday. Bangladesh and Nepal will co-host the tournament which features 16 ‘emerging’ countries, divided into four groups, and will run from March 25 to April 9, 2006. The final of the coveted event will be played in Nepal, if Bangladesh does not make it to the summit clash. Nepal will be the hosts even if both the hosts make it to the final. The final match will be played in Bangladesh only if they reach the final against any other team. Group A comprises India, Chinese Taipei, the Philippines and Afghanistan while co-hosts Nepal, Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Brunei are in Group B. Co-hosts Bangladesh are alongside Palestine, Cambodia and Guam in Group C while two the Central Asian countries of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan have been drawn in Group D with Pakistan and Macau. Former AFC Director of Grassroots and Youth Development Thomas Flath has taken over the coach of Nepal for the upcoming two tournaments – AFC Challenge Cup and South Asian Football Federation Championship. Thomas Flath arrived in Nepal this week and has been briefed by the ANFA technical director, Bhim Thapa about the players and the structure of the Nepalese Football Association. Flath has been the junior coach of Schalke in 2004 and is currently working in German’s Football Association. Flath has taken over the practice sessions which have been started in March of this year under the guidance of Bhim Thapa. The German’s contract runs until June 30th which covers the upcoming two tournaments. Meanwhile, Nepal played two friendlies against Pakistan prior to Flath’s arrival. Nepal won the first match by 2-1 meanwhile, Pakistan came back strongly in the second match to win by 2-0. After two years hiatus (There was a big dispute withing the FA), the Nepal League is back. The league consists of 12 clubs, all the minnows have been relegated and there was no promotion, thus the matches have been very exciting thus far. The tournament is wide open and any of 6-8 clubs could potentially win it. About half of Nepal's player pool has gone abroad to work or study, so lots of young new faces in the league. Nepal has tightened visa regulations so there are no African players in the league thus far. Manang Marsyangdi have 5 Korean players, Sankata 2 Bangladeshi players and there is 1 French player and 1 Danish/Iranian player playing for Three Star and New Road respectively. The Koreans are Korean university students and the European players are expats - all of whom have played at the amateur level in their home countries. Crowds have really dropped since the last league. Before it averaged around 2,500 with about 5,000 on weekends.
