It is the same teams from last year but the teams typically change from year to year. here is a wiki link of the history of the tournament This year, I understand they had six MLS teams interested. I know TFC and DCU were kept due to the large fans contengency of fans that came down for the games in the past. RSL was invited back to retain their title from last year. The Tournament is pretty competative even though they are just friendlies in preseason.
Spoke with Andrew Bell (Charleston Battery president) at length last night at our supporter group meeting. Nothing is confirmed but they would like to do the webcast again for Carolina Challenge Cup. They have the equipment and the know how, so hopfully everything will come together!
I hope RSL gets some of the new guys more involved with this tournament. I want guys like Warner, Cox, Alexandre, Schuler to get more involved. Can Tino and Nimo cut it as strikers with the Senior team? We have to know these things.
Absolutely true. I want to see Tino and Nimo in more games this year, theyve been tossed around from project to project and want them to be here for more games.
I knew we were heading towards problems when Tino Nunez was sent down to USL2 Harrisburg City Islanders because he wasn't getting any playing time. With the busy int'l schedule this year, this shouldn't be an issue.
or maybe its time to drop tino and nimo and look for some other players. If tino and nimo havent cracked the 11 let alone the 18 in regular season games, then why would we want them in the international games and such?
Alex Nimo is a young player - he needs time to develop. In addition, because of his GA status he can't be "dropped". Tino will definitely be battling for a spot this preseason.
If Abe Thompson is possibly there to replace Yura's spot, then in theory, who is Tino Nunez fighting for a spot again? As a forward, is he competing against people, yet?
FYI For those making the trip down (or even comtemplating it), there is going to be a large youth soccer tournament in town the 19, 20 and 21 of Mar. Last year there were more than 170 teams involved with many coming from out of state. Most the matches will be held around Mt. Pleasant area so hotels might be at a premium in that area for the last weekend. I would expect many of those teams to be attending the match on Saturday night as well so it should be a good crowd the last night of the tourny.
Thanks for the updates Mikey. We're still planning on heading down, but only for the Wednesday and 2nd Saturday matches. Lookin' forward to the trip and we'll get our accomdations worked out sooner than later based on the kiddies tourney being around.... Any suggestions for a section for tix for the RSL fans, or just buy the cheap ones and figure it out from there? Cheers!
I'd go with the cheap ones and go from their. dont forget to leave open Thursday evening for the pub crawl. would be good to have a couple of RSL fans this year.
So when do you play the inexperienced striker Mr. Nunez? Do you play him in important league games where every point counts or do you play him in the CCL against strong competition and a tournament that you want to advance in? There is the US Open Cup!
Ill post all the info on the Battery board, via our supporters group Facebook page and will cross post to the team forums as well. I have a few of the particulars worked out It will be Thursday night, starting around 7 at a a place called the Buccaneer. Looks like our first drink there will be free! We'll end up at a Irish place called Tommy Condons around 11. early enough for the locals that might have to get up the next day and if others want to continue through the night... Tommy's has a house band that does traditional irish music but also does covers of some classic rock with the fiddle, badaron, guitar. in between I there are quite a few places that are in that area. Once i work out the other stops between. Ill put together a map with times
Got the scarf order in and they will be available during the Carolina Challenge Cup. The front of the scarf Here is the back. It features the Charleston "skyline" as well as the obvious "Carolina Challenge Cup 2010" The scarf will have a white fringe and will be the typical European sytle quailty and size. We have only made a small order and price will be $20each. If you want one we will be selling them at the tailgates, pub crawl, soccer viewing parties at the Madra Rua and will have a table in the stadium before the games, and between the halves. If you can't make it and still want one, PM me and we can work out the details.

Well, due to some unfortunate events with my mom out in CA, we are not going to be able to make the CCC trip....not too happy about it, but whattya do...
thats too bad. Hope everything works out. But all is not lost, I hearing there might be webcast of the matches....
I'm worried this tourney won't happen given the labor situation... what's the word? Will a strike only happen for regular season, if at all?
