He was brought in to replace one of the draftees, Kris Banghart, who was released on Sunday. Link.

I think this is pretty good move. We picked up a good young player with potential for basically nothing. I thought that he looked promising in the College Cup two years ago and for the U-20 team. I'm surprised that he couldn't find a team in the year and a half. He may have been a first round pick last year if he had signed with MLS.

You heard wrong. Unless if something changed since Monday, Williams is on RSL's roster. He joined the team for preseason camp on Monday.

The lottery seams pretty redundant... if the player in question is influential enough he gets to go pretty much where he wants anyway (McBride, Perkins, Gil...). Should be interesting to see where he ends up, and how he gets there.

Interesting. When did you post that? I've been checking your blog, Ives, and Goff today to try and learn more about the kid. The best I'd found was on rsltothecore.com stating he had joined the team (didn't say on trial), and was replacing Kris Banghart. I figured by that statement that he had joined the team. This whole situation is really strange.

Edit: I also just checked WVHooligan, the Offsides, and duNord, but couldn't find anything else.

Update: I was able to verify that Williams will be subject to a lottery in the future (timeframe not set). He paid his own way to come on trial with RSL as he wanted to get in shape, and have a shot at proving himself.

its not like we needed another defender anyways...
it is encouraging to see him want to come train here though. JK is obviously doing something right (gil and williams both wanted to come here).
Now if they could just find that "prolific" goal scorer...

Thread title updated to reflect new info.

Since KC won the last lottery (hehe) RSL's chances increased slightly for this lottery for Williams. In other words we have more balls now.

Speaking of balls, it was interesting to read the Behind the Shield update about the Rapids jealousy of our silver balls. He he.

Maybe our tagline should be RSL: We've got silver balls!

This coming from the guy who is constantly bagging on David Horst and saying we need to dump him.

We need good players at every position. Depth can not be underestimated.

True - we have 5 established defenders for 4 positions. Not exactly the deepest spot on the team. That's why you saw 3 defensive draftees, a defender picked up from waivers, and now a defender on trial.

In response to this. Does anyone know who Wililams agent is? All this can be clarified. I don't think he would be training with RSL if he is not on the team. He could be training anywhere since he was spotted training with the REVs before the U20 World Cup. I'm sure he has lots of ties to Boston and I don't think a kid who has been in 2 World Cups would be sitting around or having to prove himself. I'm sure the kid was training somewhere. If MLS signed the kid and he is playing for RSL why is everything such a hush hush and why wasn't he in the draft. Everything about this kid has been kept in low key and know one seems to know what really took place with the draft. Hummmmm No response from MLS also on this kid makes me wonder.

I have come to the realization that we are going to keep this kid. Depth is valuable, however, the roster size limits being seriously deep anywhere. I think our depth in the back, as of now, is pretty solid. The only position I have questions about is the front line. If Findley goes down, what happens? God forbid, but what if 2 forwards go down? Espy and Findley out? Where does RSL go from there?

Players without teams do this all the time - they are called trialists.

These were youth World Cups, and he and the US team did not perform well at the last one. He has also been recovering from a foot injury, and so it's possibly that he's not even fully fit yet.

He was not in the draft because he was exploring options in Europe, but apparently there were no takers. MLS signed him to a developmental deal, which would be $25K-ish. According to a league spokesman he'll be subject to a lottery in the near future. I'm not sure what's so hush-hush about it (other than the fact that info in MLS is generally hard to come by).

Agreed. At the end of the day, I don't think he'll be around. And I don't think anyone will notice.

"In addition, Real Salt Lake decided not to bring U.S. Youth National Team product Sheanon Williams along to Utah for training this week, parting ways with the young defender after having him train with the squad during its last week in Arizona."

    So it ends.
