Here's what Im seeing currently Through TripAdvisor.com -$1952(including taxes and fees) through Iberia June 10-June 24 the good- Cheapest flight I've found, under 2k including fees and taxes the bad- 13hour layover in Barcelona (switching from one red eye to another). Really only a bad thing if you want it to be. -$2200 (including taxes and fees) through Emirates June 11-June 24 the good- layover is only 2-3 hours in Dubai the bad- considerably more expensive Both flights get you into JNB around 10am on June 12th I also checked Ethiopian airlines (ethiopianairlines.com) -$1956 (including taxes and fees) June 10-June 26th the good- short layovers, sub 2k pricetag, arrive in JNB in the afternoon on the 11th the bad- Requires a few extra nights paying for hotels
How did you arrange for the free hotel on your layover? My travel agent said that I may get a free hotel room on my outbound flight (15 hour layover in Madrid), but that is subject to change based on the airline (Iberia). Is there any way to influence (ie, increase) the chances of getting a free room?
I think this is something that Emirates offers (and I'm guessing they only do this for Dubai which is their home base). When I was booking the flight with the airline over the phone, they just offered it to me....
You could definitely do worse than 13 hours in Barcelona. Heck, I'd probably pay extra for half a day in Barcelona.
For Folks Flying Out of Denver Delta / Air Namibia flies from Denver -> Atlanta -> Accra -> JNB. $2021.
Odd flight options: The top choice that I'm finding for an itinerary from Orlando - Johannesburg (June 10 - June 20) Delta: $3114 round trip. Flights (this is where it gets odd): Orlando - Cincinnati Cincinnati - Columbus Columbus - Atlanta Atlanta - Johannesburg
That's a weird one. Probably worth an annoying seven-hour bus ride to Atlanta to get a flight from there ($2200 as opposed to $3100).
I utilized Kayak.com and found some pretty decent deals. Still haven't booked mine yet though...I'm sure most you guys know this, but flying out and returning mon-thurs is far cheaper than fri-sun flights. http://www.usa2010.org - "Wear your support for the USMNT!" Over 3,000 sold to date!
It's "only" $2007 on Travelocity if you leave JFK on June 9 and return on June 24. The flight out stops in Atlanta and arrives the evening of the 10th in JNB and the return leg arrives at JFK on the 25th after a stop in Amsterdam.
Those Emirates fares are sweet...one thing to check: does the mileage count for Status (Premier, 1K, etc)? Pretty sure you will get the mileage for future free flights, etc...but it will not count towards status. If so, 20K miles is a lot to give up.
You're right. Although I'll credit credited with miles, but this doesn't count towards elite status. That's OK with me. I can't really justify paying another $1500 (per person) for the elite status...
Found a decent fare from NYC on Delta/KLM/Kenya Airlines on Expedia, $2099: NYC-->Amsterdam-->Nairobi-->Johannesburg 6/9-6/10 Johannesburg-->Amsterdam-->London-->NYC 6/24-6/25
Internal flights in June are insane. I was hoping to stay at a friend's in Cape Town and fly back and forth to Jo'burg for the 3 US games, but the prices are about $300 each way, when during the year they are $100 and below...even on the 'low-cost' carriers 1time. Anyone else find lower internal flights?
Lowest I found was around $700 round trip (JNB <=> CPT) on British Airways. An interesting thing I noticed was that the actual ticket costs about $450, and the rest are taxes (incl. VAT, airport fee plus other surcharges). It looks like "taxes" are around 50% (or more) on domestic flights.... I believe trains take over 24 hours between Jo'burg and Cape Town, and driving will take about 14 hours (traffic permitting)...
SAA to increase capacity for Soccer World Cup http://www.businessday.co.za/articles/Content.aspx?id=90724
Not sure if it's related, but I've noticed a drop in their fares on routes to Jo-burg from JFK since this announcement. If I could book now, there's a pretty good deal on Swissair out of Boston, leaving on the 9th and coming back on the 24th for about $2,500 in total. Return leg would be via Lufthansa.
If anyone is still looking for flights, Iberia's prices just came down. I just booked JFK-JNB (long layover in Madrid, which is great if you wanna get out) June 9-July 12 for $2300. Booked on Iberia's US Site. Now I am really excited.
Thanks for the info, SAA direct from jfk to jnb has gone down almost 1000, wonder what they will do, if they drop it to 2500 or so then they will get so many more people since the flight will save people about 8-12 hours in connections from 1-2 stoppers.
If the price from USA to JNB via Europe/Atlantic is more than 2800$, you might be able to fly via Asia with ~2800$. Round trip ticket from Chicago to Thailand/Malaysia is ~1500$ in June, and round trip from Thailand/Malaysia to JNB is ~1300$ in June. With the two round trip tickets, you would fly: USA -> Thailand/Malaysia -> JNB -> Thailand/Malaysia -> USA. A. Per Kenya Airline web site, round trip Thailand - JNB costs ~1300$ from June 13-June 18. B. Per Malaysia Airline web site, round trip Malaysia-JNB costs ~1400$ from June 13- June 18. C. Per expedia.com, round trip Chicago-Thailand costs ~1500$ from June 10-21. Buying A and C will cost ~2800$, and it should be cheaper if you fly out of the west cost. The down side of flying via Asia is that it will take longer but it will work out OK if you also want to visit Asia.
Flying from D.C. to johannesburg. im currently active duty so i can take a free flight to Germany and then try to roll from there. I have seen a couple diff sites that are decent, does anybody have any experience or know people with experience in regards to travel associated with these sites? http://www.cheapflightstocapetown.org.uk/ http://www.asaptickets.com/cheap-flights-to-fifa-world-cup **from the reviews that i have read regarding asap is that there fairs are generally more than what they quote you online (you have to call to actually purchase) and its virtually impossible to change flight days after you buy, but other than that it may be a good deal. I just want to get there without paying 3500 if possible. any words of wisdom in regards to these flights or if they know of a diamond in the rough from germany to jburg, let me know. thanks
I've found some decent fares from NYC-JNB using Kayak (under 2500). You could try out of there. Also, Swissair has some good deals to JNB from Switzerland and Germany.
I'm leaning a bit towards a flight on Swissair that goes from Boston - Zurich - Johannesburg, leaving on June 9th, arriving on the 11th. It stretches out the travel a bit, but you have about a 12-hour layover in Zurich on the 10th and with downtown a short (10 minute) ride on the S-Bahn from the airport, it's not a bad option. Get out, stretch your legs, take in some sun and have a few beers at the Bauschänzli (pictured below), then back to the airport for an overnight flight to Jo-burg. The return would be on Lufthansa through Frankfurt with about a 6-8 hour layover there.
Yes this is very good site for cape town flights it's providing cheap flights and affordable accommodation.
Is anybody else having difficulties geting the South Africa Airways website? I went there earlier this week to www.flysaa.com, but no the website does not appear. All I get now is a generic website wanting to sell the domain name to me. Did the airline go bankrupt overnight? Or is it just a temporary website issue?
