I know it's impossible to do but just give it a shot for me. Who makes the 23 man roster?

its hard enough to do for 2010 let alone 2014, but this seems fun so here's my prediction. I hope somebody digs this up 4 years from now and I can see how dumb I look

Def: Onyewu, Spector, Gonzalez, Alston, Marshall, Bornstein, Opara, Agbossemounde
Mid: Bradley, Feilhaber, Dempsey, Donovan, Torres, Holden, Edu, Gil

We had a thread like this in 2006..............and even the most knowledgeable fans on these boards............were completely wrong. We knew there was going to be big turnover from 06 to 10, however. If you look at the number of players from the 06 squad that will make the 10 squad, it looks to be at the very most 9 out of the 23, with Ching a big question mark (and Onyewu as well due to health concerns).

1 GK Tim Howard Manchester United
2 DF Chris Albright LA Galaxy
    3 DF Carlos Bocanegra Fulham
4 MF Pablo Mastroeni Colorado Rapids
5 MF John O'Brien Chivas USA
6 DF Steve Cherundolo Hannover 96
7 MF Eddie Lewis Leeds United
8 MF Clint Dempsey New England Revolution
9 FW Eddie Johnson Kansas City Wizards
10 MF Claudio Reyna Manchester City
11 FW Brian Ching Houston Dynamo
12 DF Gregg Berhalter Energie Cottbus
13 DF Jimmy Conrad February Kansas City Wizards
14 MF Ben Olsen D.C. United
    15 MF Bobby Convey Reading
16 FW Josh Wolff Kansas City Wizards
    17 MF DaMarcus Beasley PSV
18 GK Kasey Keller Borussia Mönchengladbach
    19 GK Marcus Hahnemann Reading
    20 FW Brian McBride Fulham
21 FW Landon Donovan LA Galaxy
22 DF Oguchi Onyewu Standard Liège
23 DF Eddie Pope Real Salt Lake

We're going to have a MUCH younger squad in 2010 than 2006. The only "aged-out" players will probably be Cherundolo, Bocanegra, Hahnemann, and veteran forwards like Ching. Even a player like Beasley is only 27 right now. The "veterans" on the squad like Donovan, Dempsey, Onyewu, Howard, etc. will still be around in 2014. I see some rosters on here without Tim Howard. Tim is only 30 right now.................34-35 ain't old for a keeper. He'll still be on the squad.

2014 team shown as starting XI and reserves:

    ----------Altidore----Davies---------

    Donovan----Edu--Bradley-----Holden

    Spector--Gonzales--Onyewu--Lichaj

    ------------Howard---------------

    Backups by position:

    ----------Adu----Tracy-----------

    Palodichuck--Torres--Jones--Dempsey

    Orozco--Cameron--Marshall--Simek

    ---------------Guzan-------------
    -------------GK#3 Seitz-----------

    * Only 4 of 20 field players will be age 30+: Donovan, Onyewu, Dempsey, and Jones, because even at age 32 there won't be any younger guys good enough to knock them off the Nat's. Donovan and Onyewu will still be starting. Dempsey might, if Davies never regains his top form.

    * 15 of 20 field players will be prime ages between 24 and 29: Altidore, Davies, Edu, Bradley, Holden, Spector, Gonzales, Lichaj, Adu, Tracy, Torres, Orozco, Cameron, Marshall, and Simek. This will create a rock solid, dependable, proven professional core for the team.

    * Only 1 field player will be truly "young". I'm taking a flyer on Nicholas Palodichuck, who looked good with the U17's this year and has pro physical tools. The other promising U17's like Renken, Lletget, Gyau and Gil won't be ready to knock off the prime age guys by 2014, but will form part of another deep prime age core for 2018.

    * Spector will be the desperation starting LB when the US pool continues to fall flat at this position. ;)

    * Guys like Boca, DeMerit, Goodson, Cherundolo, Clark, Ching, and Casey will transition out of the team during 2011-2013, just like Mastro, Wolf and Lewis did during 2007-2009.

    * Feilhaber and Bornstein will play a lot during the cycle, but will peak before 2014 and will just miss out on the Cup roster, only making the alternates list. Beasley will play when healthy, but periodic injuries will knock him out as he enters his 30's. Rogers will often be part of the team, but in the end just not take the next step into the firm 23. A lot of very good players will miss the 2014 team.

i wont make any snide remarks about people attempting to guess the unguessable

but who would have guessed (in 05) that players like Clark, Holden, Torres, Edu, Jozy, Guzan & even MB would have been either starters or top prospects to filling the 2010 roster??

i would like to think that more youthful euro based players will start making their mark on the USMN seniors.

players like Picault (cagliari), Packwood (birmingham), & Lletget (West Ham) just to name a few. While they are in fact young players (17-19) i would imagine 2-3 yrs of euro training and PT would improve their likelihood of stepping up. But then again this topic has been brought up for years about other "promising" Euro based youth players.

who knows what we'll see, but it certainly looks promising as we continue to move up

    2014 team

Howard, Guzan, Donovan, dempsey, Gooch, Holden, Jozy, Bradley, Davies

Throw in 3 average MLS players that will blossom and make the team.

Throw in one current stud youth player

Throw in 10 guys no one's ever heard of at this point or who aren't curently professionals.

    Voila! your 2014 Roster

I hope someone like Renken, Gyau, or Agbossoumande blossoms and makes it.

    My pure guess:

    GK: Howard, Guzan, Seitz
D: Spector, Onyewu, Marshall, Bornstein; Lichaj, Agbossouomande, Opara, Beasley
M: Donovan, Bradley, Jones, Rogers; Holden, Edu, Renken, Gyau
    F: Davies, Altidore, Dempsey, Adu

I usually don't participate in these things, but I'll give this one a go:

GKs: Brad Guzan, Tim Howard, Dominic Cervi - big battle for the #1 spot after big Brad retires. Does Timmay hold on to the #1 spot? If he doesn't, does he hang around to be the backup? Dominic Cervi has the best club situation of any of the young keepers, so I'll tab him as #3.

    DEFENDERs:
Onyewu - he will be the leader for this squad and is athletic enough to still be damn good at 32.
Spector - whether it is as a CB or RB, he's got it. As long as he's healthy, he'll be there.
Marshall - how are Conrad, Demerit, and Califf still talked about more than Marshall? Just because he hasn't gone to Europe yet? Marshall is right behind Bocanegra and Demerit.
Lichaj - he can play both flanks and should be getting plenty of playing time by that point.
Garza - we should see him integrated into the squad the same way that both Altidore and Adu were integrated in after their U20 World Cup. Possibly the best LB prospect the US has ever had.
Gonzalez - showed great improvement in just one MLS season. At 6'5", he'll fit in just nicely in the US's CB ranks along side Onyewu and Marshall (both at 6'4").
Alston - he's so damn athletic and became a shut down guy on the right for New England. He couldn't ask for a better coach. The only question will be whether or not he can hold his spot over Marvell Wynne, who will either improve or crash when he finally heads to Europe.

    MIDFIELDERs:
Donovan - he has already embraced his role as provide and should develop even more into a Blanco-type role as he slows down a bit over the next 5 years.
Dempsey - why count him out now? He's proven everyone wrong time and time again. He's 27 and he hasn't even come close to peak yet; Clint just keeps getting better and better every year.
Bradley - duh. It'd be awesome if he was starting for a Champions League team by this point.
Holden - has the best career upswing of any American player at this point. A few years in Britain should do him so good.
Edu - CM on a Champions League team. Yep.
Torres - can't see him staying in Mexico too much longer. The first American player to make a major impact in La Liga will not be ignored.
Feilhaber - Aarhus is only the beginning.

    FORWARDs:
    Altidore - duh.
Davies - I am the opposite of the most paranoid BS posters. I think CD will be back, score plenty of goals for Sochaux, and then be bought by one of the best French clubs.
Adu - the next coach will change the senior team's style, and Adu will be influential. Whether it is in Greece or MLS, Freddy will get his swagger back in time for 2014.
Cooper - like I said, the next coach will change the style. In that style, a forward who is smooth with the ball at his feet will be valued.
Renken/Gil - both are longshots, yeah. But their style is similar to Adu's. If Adu becomes important to this squad, then a backup is needed.

I don't know about the 23rd spot, depends on if another defender steps up. Those who will be close: Robbie Rogers, Johnathan Bornstein, Michael Orozco, Chris Pontius, Rodney Wallace (would probably make it if he chooses the U.S.), Alejandro Bedoya, Chris Rolfe, Marcus Tracy, Sacha Kljestan, Robbie Findley, Brek Shea, Fuad Ibrahim, etc.

Like this one the best. I would swap out Seitz for Cervi however as I see him having the bigger upside, but who knows. I think Abossouomande is going to be a beast. And how quickly do most forget about the next Adu, Charlie Renken. I see him and Gyau being ready in 2014. Don't think Adu will ever matriculate and we'll see a different 4th forward come 2014. Who knows if Davies will ever come back fully.

At the very least we are going to find one hot shot forward instead of the list of the known quantities today. Right now that guy is 16 or 17 years old and only his mom knows he is going to be on the WC team. You haven't heard of him yet.

And Brek Shea is the starting left back. Don't ask me how that is going to happen, but it will.
