Having Greek, Turk, and Dutch league over Brazil is a joke. Brazilian teams are preety good. Any team can win the championship on any day. Sao Caetano were in the 2nd division not long ago and now they are in 4th spot in the Brasileiro over powers like Fluminese, Gremio, Corinthians, and Flamengo. Hell, even historic teams like Palmeiras are in the second division right now.

What I would love to see for all the major leagues is a salary cap. This would improve the game beyond belief if you ask me. The powerhouses of the league would have to do it with other means and not just buying a team, no offense to anybody. I just think it has been great for the NFL, I would change a couple of things with its policies and such, give teams more of a chance to have a longer run on the top but other than that is has leveled the playing field and given more fans a chance to be invovled with winning a title than ever before.

Just think of it this way, say in the EPL if you told me Birmingham City was going to win the title I would laugh at you. I mean no disrespect to their fans I just don't see a lot of people thinking that. If you got the right type of a salary cap installed that could be a reality.

This is just a thought since so many of you bring up the fact that leagues aren't deep. This might also keep homegrown talent at home. If european clubs couldn't outbid for players more players would stay at home and improve their home leagues. Just think if Dutch teams could pay closer to what Spain and England pay??

    oh dear oh dear..
    that isnt good enough..

when tottenham played dc united in a friendly they fielded a team of 40 year old ex players..
thats your definition of "taking a couple of players out"?

I bet you also believe that the euro teams play 100% and take it totally seriously..
    LOL you're clutching at straws..
    get real..

    Thats stupid man.

To all those people that don´t understand the game: technical ability and quality are VERY different! I played together with people(turks) that made tricks like Ronaldo, but what happened? they lost most of their game cause they didn´t understand the game!
If you don´t understand the beauty of tactical perfection you should better shut up.

This is like asking: What do enjoy more watching:
    A) And 1/Harlem Globetrotters
    B)NBA

man, thats so, so... ah, forget it.

except and1 style hoops would never win world championships. brasilian football has won 5 times, right? i have little doubt that brasil could field a team of all home based players and at least make the wc semi finals.brasilians just seem to play at their very best when they play for the national side in major competitions (read, the world cup). they play so well together it is amazing. the way they won the last wcup is a good indication. they won all 7 of their games. and this was after struggling to qualify. when it really comes down to the biggest competition they are almost always clearly better than everyone else. i would say this of brasilian domestic football: it would be like the nba if you took the top 20 or so guys out of it and sent them to play in europe. plus you would add all of the young players who play in college hoops in america to the nba. so the nba would still be a very very strong league. ameica in basketball=brasil in football

Brazilian domestic soccer is: Take the best 50 players out + 100-150 mediocre players and you got it.

Brazil tried to field such a team in their last WCQ and guess what happened???

THEY NEARLY FAILED!!! And in the end they needed again all their players from europe to make the qualification.
Brazilians team at the Gold-cup was such a team and they lost to Mexico and nearly to the USA, so why did that happen? cause their league is so great? And against the USA it was a player from europe that brought them to OT. So why did they need him?
And another problem is that the best players from that team now also play in europe! So what do we now still have there??
A team THAT CAN`T EVEN WIN THE GOLD-CUP!!!

So how shall they reach a WC-semi-final??

    They wouldn´t even qualify.

Do you wanna know what happens to the rejects of Brazilian football? They end up playing in Germany.

Now using the Gold Cup as an argument, that's a joke. After all that was an U-23 side playing a senior tournament which anyway was able to reach the final losing only to the Mexican hosts. And for your information Kaká hadn't yet played for Milan at the time.

But this U-23 was the best Brazil had to offer!

And of course Kaka hadn´t played for them, but he does now! So the Brazilian has again become a little weaker.

Oh: MIG Killer, you´re from Rio, so you should know who Fernando Baiano is, since he was Flamengos best striker.
So what is now worse? Being a reject, as you call Baiano, or having a reject-player as your best striker, like Flamengo had?

vasco made the final of the copa liberdadores last year. that competition is the equal of the european cup.perhaps even better. after all, boca juniors are world champion now. do you think that bayern munchen would win the copa liberdadores?

Are you just a wind up merchant or have you had a lobotomy?

Boca won the Toyota cup, but that doesn't make them the best team in the world. To suggest that the Libertadores is the world's toughest competition is way off.

Also Vasco were not in the final, you are thinking of Santos.

Finally what on earth are you doing supporting Swansea, York City and Preston North End?

One wonders how on Earth Ronaldo manages to score so many goals with his Harlem Globetrotter game. Okay, he learned tactics in Europe...

Maybe you could name those teams that exhibit these technical perfections? Illuminate us to some of these superior tactics of German and European teams that the rest of the world can’t seem to understand. They seem to be quite effective, what with the current state of affairs:

    Intercontinental Club Champs.....Boca Juniors, Argentina
    Senior WC.........Brasil
    Under-20 WC.....Brasil
    Under 17 WC......Brasil
    Olympic Defending Champion.......Cameroon

A naive poster like me – unaware of X’s and O’s of football, and oblivious to the differences between superior technical attributes and street-ball – could be forgiven for thinking that tactics aren’t quite enough on their own to make the difference on the pitch.

Seriously, its going on 2004 -- everyone has access to information and the ability to view games from the biggest leagues around the world in order to learn and compare. Coaches regularly exchange ideas in coaching seminars and international competitions at all levels. Plus, what tactical revolution has occurred in football sinceTotal Football? Since then its been evolutionary tweaking of well known and existing principles. European tactics -- whether German, Italian, English (whether AC Milan’s, Inter’s, ManU’s, or Schalke’s, because its can be quite different within leagues) -- are NOT a mystery to anyone, and definitely not an indication of footballing supremacy.

    Talent + Tactics + Execution

You need a good measure of each. Talent trumps them all. If the biggest European clubs of today have any claim on supremacy, it is due to their stockpiling of global talent (often with internationals sitting their butts on the bench), and not their tactics.

However, as pointed out by many on this thread, the drop off domestically after these mega squads is precipitous and invites closer scrutiny before calling any of those leagues as clearly the best.

i was aware that it was santos. i just mistyped. i saw santos play rangers in new york in 2002. i support those english sides because i have deep emotional attachments to them. i visited york and the abbey in 2001. nice city. swansea has a very tidy firm of casuals and i am a former hooligan meself. plus i am a practicing pagan. so i dig wales. and pne i support because the great eddie lewis plays there.

If you want to support a Welsh team for their hooligan element, then the Swansea Jacks are not for you. They are puffs. The Soul Crew are by far the biggest firm in S. Wales.

oh, i've been to old trafford as well. i'm sure the inner city jibbers and the cockney reds rule that part of manchester. kind of a tough area. i was walking around by the cricket ground and i got into it with a few kids.
