The Breakers announced today that the team will donate the entire proceeds of all new 2010 full season ticket sales between Friday, December 11th and Friday, December 18th to assist USWNT legend Michelle Akers as she works to rebuild her Horse Rescue and Outreach sanctuary for abandoned and abused horses which was recently destroyed by floods in Georgia.

The plan went into action when Tony DiCicco learned through friends that Akers planned to fund the estimated $50,000 in repairs by auctioning off her world cup and olympic medals and mementos. Horse Rescue and Outreach is a 501c3, so fans who wish to support Michelle by direct online donation - rather than Breakers season ticket purchase - may also do so. Links are provided in the news story linked below.

Many other soccer organizations are expected to chip in and spread the word as well. The Breakers felt the need to take a leading role, both because of Tony's long-time connection with Michelle and because Michelle actually suited up as a Breaker for her farewell tribute game against Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom in September 2002, an exhibition match that drew more than 10,000 fans to Boston's Nickerson Field.

    Please spread the word.

    Andy,

Major applause and gratitude to you and the entire Breakers organization for the initiative (sp?) with the season tickets!

It just shows the fine (understatement) organization that the Breakers are, and reflects the interview with you-- in which you said that you hope the Breakers will serve as an example to other WPS teams.

Well Done and Best of Luck!

Just made a donation. Kudos to the Breakers for stepping up. That match in '02 was great - I felt honored to be one of the people who got to see Michelle Akers play for the last time.
