How about South Florida United join forces! be ONE! like the ********ing Wonder Twins! Wonder teams activate in the form of South Florida United! I love it! LOL
I guess kind of like Rangers or Celtic. They don't have city names. Strikers FC wouldn't be bad... ....but, there is no precedent in the US or Canada for a team with no city, state or region in it's official name. I still think you have to put a city in the name, and it should be the one the team plays in. Whatever the team is called we are still one big metro area and if the team can last it will be embraced no matter what. Minneapolis and St. Paul are like Ft. Lauderdale and Miami, but they are the only market with pro sports in Minnesota, so all their teams take that name. It would be easy just to call the team "Florida Strikers", but a) they did that once already and the team failed, and b) there are other noteworthy cities in Florida. At the time the Marlins were founded they were the only baseball team in the state, and the Florida Panther is an actual animal, so they work. Other than those two, it sounds decidedly minor league to call a team the "Florida anythings". Here's a list of defunct minor league teams from various sports with "Florida" in the name: Florida ThunderCats(NPSL) Florida Thundercats(ABA) Florida Flame(NBDL) Florida Frenzy(NIFL) Florida Strikers(USISL) Florida Stingers(CBA) Florida Sea Dragons(USBL) Florida Sharks(USBL) Florida Jades(WBL) Florida Beachdogs(AFL) Florida Blazers(WFL) Florida Seals(ACHL) Florida Hammerheads(RHI) Florida Stars(USISL) Plus "Strikers", in my opinion, just sounds wrong after anything but Ft. Lauderdale. That's the name people remember. Anything else and you lose a lot of the marketing clout the name brings. If they decide on Miami I say keep Miami FC as the name and continue to try and build that brand. But if they move to Broward it would be downright stupid not to change the name to Ft. Lauderdale Strikers. I know we all have differing opinions on where the team should play, but can we all agree that if they do choose Broward as the full time home the team should take on the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers name? They'd have the perfect opportunity to resurrect a well known, popular local brand, and they'd be silly to do otherwise.
There is. It's not a team per se, but more of a soccer training program, and here's their website: http://strikeforcesoccer.com/ Next.
A youth soccer program that fields teams in various youth leagues. Last time I had anything to do with them was @ 10 years ago when they played all their games at Miami-Dade CC South Campus. Maybe they still do. Nice to know that they still exist.
Also, Crystal Palace "Baltimore" is like calling Arsenal, "Arsenal London", it's erroneous. The official name is Crystal Palace FC USA.
Okay but Chivas is a whole different animal. If your starting a new team(or in this case rebranding one), at least in the US/Canada, you put the city or location in the team's name. Chivas is only named as such because it's owned by Chivas Gaudalajara. It really should have LA in the name somewhere. I could live with the foreign owners and identical logo if it was Chivas LA, or even better Club Deportivo Los Angeles(or even better than that San Deigo). The parent club gets their marketing out of it from the logo and jerseys etc. and the smaller club gets to not have a stupid name. Anyway for the Strikers I think you need Ft. Lauderdale or Miami in the official name.
So there is a "Crystal Palace" type building in Baltimore? Because I know the real Crystal Palace in England is named after THE Crystal Palace!
I have to agree with you on that one. Manchester United named after they UNITED several teams in the area to form Manchester United. So, I assume D.C. United did the same? or is it just a name they came up with? What about South Florida United?... uniting past and present NASL, USL,and MLS teams in South Florida, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale? Just a suggestion, sort of makes sense. Includes everyone...
Both of them just came up with it. Man Utd used to be called Newton Heath and just decided to change their name to Manchester United. Newcastle United is actually a union of Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End.
If memory serves United came up during the discussions about naming the MLS expansion team we were supposed to get last year. It was not popular. Personally, I think it may be the best way to go if it can unite this often divided area of Florida. Other's opinions differ...
That was uncalled for sir lol. Say what you want about the Fish, but they win more ball games then they lose, and unlike all those Florida teams I listed, they still exist.
I'm a Phillies fan. I just couldn't help it. And from what I understand they'll be called the Miami Marlins anyway once the new stadium gets built.
Yep. They'll be changing the name in 2012 and, unfortunately, probably the team's colors. Also, Phillies fan?! *shakes fist* lol
Well don't shake that fist too hard. Remember the Fish have as many World Series titles in 17 seasons as the Fightins have managed in 127.
Actually, he's right (sort of). There was a minor league team called the Miami Marlins. There were two incarnations of it, really. To be honest, this is the name the Florida Marlins will switch to in a couple of years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miami_Marlins
Yep. I just pray the colors don't end up the same as the old minor league club(or anything close). Blue and orange won't look so hot when the Mets come to town >.<
