This was mentioned on the Off-Season thread, thought it was worthy of its own thread.

Here is a pic of Rolfe taping a photo to his name that appears on the door of former Fire players. Look whose name appears below Rolfe's.

You just can not wait in MLS to extend player contracts. Since they are always looking for chances overseas you have to lock them up when you get the chance or they get away like Blanco and Rolfe. I do not get it,nobody wants Mapp or Pause and those are the 2 guys they locked into here for years and years.
Waiting to the end of the year makes no sense in this league.

Months ago Blanco, Rolfe, and Segares all said they would like to return to the Fire. At the time, Klopas said there was no rush to re-sign. All are gone now. Blanco and Rolfe both said that the Fire never even made them an offer. The same thing happened with Pickens.

Just what in the hell is Klopas doing?

Don't know about Blanco but the Fire did make offers to Rolfe but he said in an interview with Sam shortly after he signed that in effect the offers were not even close to being respectable. Not sure about Pickens situation either but my guess is that he was made a low-ball initial offer as well.

I asked the question to Ives about Rolfe, and he said the Fire offered in the range of $200,000 - $250,000, which Rolfe and his people didn't like. I love Rolfe as a player, but I don't think his output is worthy of much more than $250K a year.

Segares and Conde I can see being worth $300K + and Schelotto worthy of a DP slot around $800K.

That offer came after his offer from Denmark--not before and was closer to the lower figure.

IIRC, Pickens contract demands were pretty out of line, which is why he had such a hard time finding a team to take him here after he flamed out in England..there was a big disconnect between his perceived value and the team's perceived value of him.

I thought this thread was about Segares? Segue here http://fire.american-soccer-news.com/?p=525 but Rolfe is noted too.

I guess it's about as official as we can get right now, then. Adios, Gonzo.

Hate to see Sega gone. But hes paid his dues to MLS. Played hard and phyisical without ever complaining. Ripped off should have been MLS best eleven at left back for a few years and shoulda had more than a few all star appearances.

Rolfe+Gonzo+Blanco+(?)= "Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda". Our motto the last few years: Not "THP," but "CWS." :(

If you add, Pappa, McBride, and Conde then will be New York Redbulls in 2010. That's 6 starters (7 if you add Soumare) from our 2009 team, if Klopas dosen't replace these guys it's going to be a VERY long season.

Have we lost this many quality players in one single season before, there's a chance of losing 7 players this year.

Klopas is going to be a very busy guy from now to March 27th season opener against Redballs.

You know, if we bring in a good coach and he sweeps away a lot of this year's starters and rebuilds, I'm OK with being... well, not the RedBulls but more like the 2006 and 2007 Crew. Sigi's first two years in Cbus were wretched as he painstakingly assembled what became a damn good team. If that's what it takes to win the Double in 2012 and be at least a major contender for two or three years after that, so be it.

Well, think about it this way...

    1) Rolfe lead the team in goals the last 2 years, (and was 2nd on the team in 2007).
    2) Justin Mapp is making over 200k to ride the bench.
    3) A team in Europe is offering 330k for 3 years guaranteed.
    4) He was played out of position for most of the last 2 years.
    5) A new CBA is about to be written.
    6) He's a well liked player (by the fans) on a team that is seeing it's fans bail

I wouldn't have been disappointed if they offered Rolfe 350k (assuming the new CBA will raise salaries) aftering having signed Mapp for 200k.

I see Segares, Mcbride, & Conde most likely staying with the fire....even though it may not look like it to most

i dont see them leaving, but Blanco probably wont be resigned after the world cup

I'm not sure who DG can muster try outs with in Europe. Sega road the pine for country and missed a good chunk of the season due to injury. Then again, he ain't getting any younger, so he's probably not going to get too many opportunities to live the Euro dream.

I wish him well, but for purely selfish reasons, I hope to see him back here next year.

    The Fire didn't protect Segares.

    They must know he's gone.

Pickens didn't have contract demands, Guppy at the time didn't seem to have any rush in dealing with him until he offered a last minute offer that basically matched QPR's offer to him. Guppy's lack of initiative to deal with Pickens until it was too late was the "straw that broke the camels back" for lack of better phrases. Anyways, his return to MLS was delayed by the league as there were teams interested in him immediately after his return. Also, the Fire felt they should get their fair share giving up one of there own best young players. Not sure where you got your information.

I don't think getting Segares tryouts in Europe will be a problem. IMO, they tend to look for young players they can develop and they look at their potential which even if they had a tough year, opportunites exist. Even if Segares had to take a step back in compensation (which he wouldn't) I think there is sufficient interest in his potential that getting tryouts won't be a problem. Gonzo has shown plenty in the last two years or so to warrant a decent amount of interest.
