Exactly. Soccer has a proud tradition of clubs' unique initials being their shorthand names:PSG QPR CSKA PSV RSL is enough. Anything else is contrived to the point of inducing cringes and/or vomit. So if minimally-talented 'writer' hacks need a nickname crutch to enhance their so-called 'writing'.... frankly that's not our problem. If anything, the use of abominations like lakers or royals is helpful--for it betrays the credibility of the author and his/her opinion. Just as use of claret & cobalt suggests an author is a un-independent FO/MLS lackey. We are RSL. Deal with it. EDIT: correction... editor ^^
Well said DO6 and FM. Cheap writing/lyrics makes me, as FM said, vomit. There is no creativity involved, but when its like something like this we can just stick to what sounds good and what works. ReAL and RSL. If you go on any other MLS teams forum you can find them having a hard time picking a name for us (IE- Fake Salt Lake- Crapids, Rocky Mountain Taliban- Shitcago). So maybe having kind of a weird/abnormal name is a good thing.
make it something completely random 'the Pies' sing "I had a wheelbarrow, the wheel fell off" to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey and twin with Sven Goram Erikson and the new mega rich middle east consortium at Notts County, exchange players & technical knowledge in symbiotic growth
Dare I add to this discussion? IF you really, really want a new nickname for the team, you don't sit around and toss out ideas -- you pick one you like, run it up the flagpole and see who salutes. That is, use it and see if it sticks. If you want the team to be the taffies or the jellacticos or the...handcarts?, then only refer to it by those names. If people like it, they'll use it too, and it will eventually enter the lexicon. If not, you'll be branded a failure forever and ever. Either way, it's time to nut up or shut up.
as an outsider to the team, I have to agree that 'RSL' or just 'Real' is what sounds best. None of the other ideas presented in this thread sound good to me. Of course, Fake Salt Lake is what the rest of us call you most often on our gameday threads and a side note concerning FCD: Quite a few FCD fans refer to them as Toros or Red Stripes. We've got many nickname threads as well, and quite a few fans don't really like Hoops. The Front Office stopped referring to the team as the Hoops this year, although all other teams, tv announcers, and writers have kept going with it, so it may never die. Recently I bought this official MLS jacket from the MLS shop that has Toros on the sleeve, so this is proof the FCD FO is trying out this new nickname and attempting to get away from Hoops. - and also congrats on the Playoff win!!!! I enjoy watching the Crew, but it was fun to watch RSL steal that series too. Both games were really fun ones to watch.
thats a classy jacket... just replace the crest with an RSL one and insert... well whatever nickname we eventually (or not) come up with on the sleeve. Toros is a sweet nickname, same with red stripes (jamaicans would love it I believe, no?).
I dont know how everyone else feels about this but I like the nickname of the "Xango's". Now I realize we may not always have Xango as our sponsor but since it was the first front of jersey sponsor in MLS I think it is a good tribute and it is a big part of our history. It is also unique. Of course we are RSL or Real and for the most part that is how I refer to the team but the more I hear "Xangos" the more I like it. Go Xangos!
Word, Cotton. Maybe our nickname should reflect on something in our logo, kind of like how England is knows as "the three lions" based on their crest....."the yellow crowns", or something like that.
"its time to put your mouth where our balls are" the yellow crowns aint bad... it could work, who knows, give it some time.
It doesn't work for me. "Go Yellow Crowns". Nahhh. Plus, it's easily perverted to "yellow clowns" or other taunts. RSL could add a lion en rampant to the logo and we could call them The Lions. That would be too simple I guess.
Didn't we used to play that Bob Marley song, "Iron Lion Zion"? I've always thought the Zion Lions was a cool nickname.
Zion Lions... it could grow on me. I like the Lion nickname personally as well, it just makes sense (its our "mascot" and its the king of the jungle, so its "real") the winners is good... in October and November its too bad that we dont have 10+ years of good performance. The Dynasty would be a great nickname
I was just reading an article on soccer365.com where Greg Seltzer refers to RSL as "The Royal Army".....I have to say I really like this nickname. It plays off the whole Real/kings/lions theme we've got going on, and acknowledges our local predominant religion (see LDS Hymnbook pg. 251 "Behold! A Royal Army"). I know these things can't be forced, but I like this better than any of the other nicknames I've heard, including my own suggestions.
I LOVE Royal Army. I'd also be open to a Lion replacing the ball in our crest and playing off Zion Lions. Lions of Zion. Los Leones de Zion.
I still like "the Sundays" as a nickname, BUT, Lions of Zion, Royal Lion Army, Royal Zion Army, Zion Lions, Army Royale, Lions Royale or something to that effect.
You know, not to be totally sacreligious (though it is, kinda), but all you would have to do is change three words in the chorus, and that would be a great song to sing before a match. (Looks around for the inevitable lightning.)
How about "Saints" for Latter Day Saints? The best nicknames are the most local; Cowboys,Patriots,Packers,49ers,76ers,Bulls,etc. Salt Lake Saints doesnt sound half bad IMO.
