    If Giggs is fit I'd love to see him play behind Rooney. Anderson is rounding into form, and he and Fletcher together should hopefully anchor down midfield with help from a tracking winger.

    Should Giggs be ok, I too would like to see him play a part.

    This is gonna be a bum twitcher... Chelsea have scored 4 or 5 goals in there last 4 wins. If there was ever a game we need our defence with its head on this is it. After the shambolic defensive display in Europe and Rio out for weeks this is gonna have to be a you score 3 we score 4 strategy...

    For some reason, I'm not really worried about this match. Usually, my gut is right on these things. The really good news for me is that my wife is going to be out with a friend so I will be able to watch the match in peace.

    Obviously if Giggs is healthy then he plays as he is a touch match-up for Chelsea. I'd also like to see Anderson and Fletcher out there, although Anderson may be too undisciplined. Valencia will almost certainly start but I'm not sure what Fergie will do on the other side. And it would not surprise me to see Berbatov begin on the bench.

    I would counter their diamond with our diamond. Giggs as an AM behind Rooney and Berba. If Berba not fit, we will probably see something like 4-5-1, similar to the Arsenal match. The problem with the latest is that there isn't a lot of goals in it.

    I expect Rooney to start by himself, tbh. Giggs maybe slightly forward as part of the middle 3 in a 4-5-1, helping support Rooney.

    And maybe it's just me, but I'd bring Owen off the bench before Berbs.

    ^^ think Rooney starts (nominally) on the left; Berba upfront and Valencia right. Giggs, Fletcher and Anderson/Carrick form the midfield 3. Evans-Vidic with Evra on the left.

    I think the only questions are Anderson/Carrick and at RB.

    Lets see what we have here...

    -22----------------------3-
    -----------16------------
    ------24----------8---------
    -----------------<---11-->--
    --------10-----9--------------

    this would be my line up if Giggs, Berbatov and Fletcher are good to go. I''m not sure if Valencia will start three games in a row. I cant see why Anderson would not have played on Tuesday if he were not going to feature in this match. Thats been our best XI players, but the shape is debatable.

    We all remember how much success Giggs had vs. Chelsea's midfield last season. Evra will own the left side of the field, with Giggs tucking in. Not sure if thats a direct match up with Ballack, Essien or Lampard [who has dropped slgihtly deeper in recent weeks to accomodate Deco and/or Joe Cole.

    SAF has talked about doing better in the big 4 ties compared to last season. With Anfield debacle already down, we need to make a statement in this game. lets hope our players are up for it.

    Either that or

    Anything, anything but a 4-4-2... That's all I ask for. I'm hoping for a nice, compact system with no isolation of Rooney and Berbatov. I also don't want O'Shea going forward too much because he doesn't have the speed to get back when Chelsea counter.

    I wonder who started off the weather in match thread trend :p

    A win is possible but I am going for a 1-1. We'll be slaughtered if we play a 442.

    Agree 100,000,000%, if we go two in central mid again (like we did against Barca, 'pool etc.) we are gonna get slaughtered.

    Big ask to get anything out of this game, will be happy with a point. Away to our main competitors, gotta consider the opposition a bit more.

    RB/RMid is gonna be important defensively - no Neville is a shame as he would be handy against Cole and poss Malouda. O'Shea has horrible distribution but seems more comfortable against pace then Wes.

    LB/LMid is gonna be important offensively - Ivanovic is probably their weak link. Nani too lazy for this game and Obertan too inexperienced / untested defensively. So would go Evra Giggs (even though not Giggsys best position anymore).

    Don't think we can afford Berba in this game as a starter - is going to be a war of attrition and he doesn't contribute enough when we don't have the ball. Likewise, Carrick has not been his old self lately, would go with Scholes as again he has more industry.

    Their system leaves them vulnerable down the flanks, but you still have to compete with their midfield three. So away from home 4-5-1 is our best bet. Valencia has not been that convincing creatively, but he does compete well. So would start Rooney up top and have Giggs nominally on the left (owing to Ivanovic) but able to have a more free role helping out.

    -------------------VDS
    O'Shea-----Vidic----------Evans-------Evra
    ------------Fletch------Anderson
    -----------------Scholes
    Valencia------------------------------Giggs
    ------------------Rooney

    Their likely side;

    ----------Anelka---------Drogba
    -----------------Deco
    --------Lampard---------Ballack
    -----------------Essien
    Cole----Terry-------Carvalho----Ivanovic
    -------------------Cech

    Our subs;

    Kuszczak, Brown, Fabio, Carrick, Obertan, Berba, Owen

    it will be really (tragically) funny if SAF does come out with a 4-4-2 when everyone on this board knows we will get kill if he does that.

    Not expecting any points from this one in all honestly. If the sleepwalking offensively and poor marking of late creep into this match, we'll be done early. Hoping we see an inspired performance with some sense of urgency. Seeing Cashly Cole , Michael Bollock et. al , happy makes me want to puke
