Should we feel bad for the cRapids?

I'm going to get crap for this thread, but I was snooping on their boards and the general feeling I get from them is complete and udder defeat.

    For example:

So we have, in my opinion, a great owner, a great stadium, great sponsors (especially for right now), a team that, in spite of eeking into the playoffs, at least shows promise year to year, a decent coaching staff and management group (FM I know you disagree, but I am mostly comparing here, yes there is room for improvement)

I would say a bright future.

Now I derived as much pleasure as anyone from watching New England win and officially knock Colorado out of the playoffs for the 4th year in a row. And I giggled all night Saturday at the fact that we pretty much killed their chances for the 3rd year running, and kept the cup again.

    BUT

It similar to the Utah BYU argument. Do we want our rivals to succeed?

I hate to see any MLS team struggle, but out of all, I want Rapids not to fail the most.

    Any thoughts?

My thought is, the difference between Colorado and RSL is not as big as many may think. One goal here or there....

These two franchises are very similar - we've been dealt the last second jolt the last two years, that is for sure.

Well, when you consider how the league is set up financially all teams benefit when all teams succeed. When one team is constantly on the bottom and they loose their fan base that will hurt the league and in turn hurt all teams in the long run.

I'm sure we don't mind the Rapids being on the bottom as long as it's not all the time, for the good of the league anyway.

Yes, but teams can still fail, and be sold or decommissioned or what ever the word is. Like the Fusion, or even how San Jose left San Jose for Houston. I know cRapids have a stadium, which will make it harder. But bottom lines are bottoms lines. And if they are getting sponsors or buts in the seats, there is only so long that can go on.

On the field, I hope they don't get a single point in the next decade.

Off the field, I'd love it if they packed their stadium every game and sold tons of merchandise. In the single-entity structure, a rising tide lifts all ships. Plus I love knowing that Robbie Findley's goals that knocked CO out of the playoff are being paid for by their own fans.

On the field, I wouldn't root for the Rapids to do well even if it benefitted RSL. Off the field, I wish them nothing but success. When any team does well in the stands, that's a win for MLS and U.S. soccer in general.

    Let me try and translate....

So you hope Colorado fans are dumber than doorknobs and brave the snow, sleet and cancelled firework shows to buy merchandise, concessions and tickets for a team that literally sucks on the field and constantly loses ;)

That sounds eerily similar to another recent expansion franchise... oh wait, nevermind.

I feel sorry for Crapids fans (talked to a couple friendly guys on Trax who drove out to the game—had to do a double-take at first: "that's not an RSL scarf…wait a minute!"), but not the Crapids.

Last year I could at least feel a bit sorry for them because Colorado outplayed RSL in the last game in Denver, led much of the game, and were victimized by the late tying goal. (They should of course finished us off but blew a few chances to do so during that match leaving themselves vulnerable for Yura's late heroics) But this year they came into Rio Tinto and were clobbered so there is no sympathy this time.

Has to stick in their craw that we keep on keeping them out of the playoffs on the last day of the season.

I agree. We all want to see the MLS be successful, including us and our rivals. Why? It makes for a much better rivalry. The reason why saturday night was so great was because of what was on the line. When it becomes a blow out each year, its not a rivalry anymore, it just becomes ridiculous and it loses its appeal. Colorado will get us, sooner or later.

I'm always of the opinion that I want my opponents to succeed. I want my closest opponents, my biggest rivals to succeed even more. That way, when my team beats them, the satisfaction is greatest. Also, the rest of the country has to take note of the quality of the rivalry and the teams in it.

Rivalries between last place teams is a collective Meh. Rivalries between two perennial powerhouses is something everyone wants to watch.

I honestly would rather New England had not made the playoffs so that the East had only 2 teams, because I'd rather the west had more teams. I'd rather Colorado made the playoffs (though, not at our expense) so that our rivalry is enriched.

Imagine if the Eastern Conference Finals had come down to RSL vs Colorado, played at the RioT! LOL! How much fun would that have been?

Do I want them to fail? No. The RMC games are the highlight of my season, and that's because of the rivalry. I hope that Colorado is a financially successful club in the long term. But do I feel bad for them? ******** no. They came to our house and got their asses kicked. Their team, and especially their captain, has a history of disrespecting other clubs, players, and fans. I ********ing despise the Rapids and there's nothing I enjoy more than watching them crash and burn.

I agree - but I think we're in the minority - seems like most fans HATE their rival to the point of cheering against them regardless of who they play (ie Utah-BYU).

I dislike the cRapids not so much because they are in Denver and Utah fans don't like them, but because I feel that Colorado is a blackhole for MLS. When they used to play at Invesco, they got no crowds. When they moved to the Dick, they stayed about the same. In fact if it wasn't for their 4th of July fireworks games, I believe they would have the worse attendance in MLS. So in that respect, they dishonor MLS and therefore RSL.

Before moving to Utah, I had a opportunity to move to Denver. While I thought that move through, I thought I might need to become a cRapids fan too. It made me sick! Now of course my decision had nothing to do with MLS (its all about fam and $) but I never forget that feeling.

Anyways, I hope cRapids turn it around and get some fans. And I always hope they are a good competitor. But when it comes down to it, I am just as happy eliminating them from the playoffs every year if it happens that way.

no. They had arguably the easiest schedule at the end of the season and blew it. they might as well incorporate the letter Y on their jersey cuz I couldnt care less (yes its better for the league blah blah blah...)

I hope they finish with 0 points next year and Pablo blows out his knee and is forced to retire...

...I also hope they average less then 5k people per game and the team threatens to leave. Screw the Crapids on every level.

When we did the trifecta again on Saturday I laughed so hard it was great!

Amen, UPinSLC--It's fun to read the playoff prediction thread in News & Analysis and watch Rocket Science's (Jasonma's) head explode. Anyone that annoying deserves all the karma he generates. Same goes for the team he supports.

  21. I cheered for the Crapids before we got our franchise because they were the closest MLS franchise (Hi, my name is Poqui and I am recovering Crapid fan... Hi Poqui). I wonder if the Crapids folded how many of their fans would become RSL fans? I'd love to see Newman with an RSL shirt on. He is a smart fan and would add much to our discussions. Or have we alienated them with the rivalry?

I cheered for the Crapids while Mooch was their coach...now, after their behavior both at RSL when they won and at Dallas (seriously, Sala should be considered a hero forever at Dallas) they have shown themselves to be much worse than bad losers...they are a$$hole winners...and should suffer from the soccer gods until they learn respect for the game and their opponents.

The fact that RSL has bi!ch-slapped them out of the playoffs for 3 years running is just karma...wonderful, wonderful, karma.

i dont really care about the Rapids. other than when they play us or when their results affect RSL i couldnt care less about the cRapids. i dont really wish them harm or that they do awful or what ever. i just dont care about them. I love RSL. im ambivalent to colorado.

i dont hate Colorado. they just dont even come up on my radar. Except of course when they play RSL. Of all the other teams in MLS i am most happy when RSL beats them. but other than game day their invisible to me. i dont think of them with hateful thoughts or anything else.
