found this on a Sochaux board, the response of his club manager who was passing along information.

    the quick points:

    Charlie was lucky

He was in back seat behind the driver wearing a seatbelt

The girl that died was in the front pasenger

Charlie will be in intensive care until the weekend, and bed rest for a month

Definately out for the season, but they are hopeful he will be back

Davies was going to miss the Costa Rica game with a minor injury, which might explain why he would be out so late the day before a match.

Sochaux is in the s.... and trying to recruit a medical wildcard to fill in for the rest of the season.

Cisse broke his leg in 3 places 2 times. Larsson broke his leg in 4 places and both of these players hit their past peak. Davies will be back.

In Colombian news it stated that his partner, 22 yold girl, has died. This true?

The "lacerated bladder" is what frightened me the most. That's how I just couldn't understand people being so insensitive yesterday. Any time there is a lacerated internal organ, its serious.

Obviously the broken bones are worrisome, but they have more to do with his playing career, while the "internal injuries" were more threatening to his life.

Not quite, she wasn't his "partner", if I'm correct in my assumption of what that word means here.

With a Tibia and Femur Fracture in the same leg he will probably be non weight bearing for 2-3 months, and then 3-4 months of rehab to get his strength and speed back, I've seen patients with femur fractures still limping at 6 months post injury. I see virtually no chance of him being back for WC2010.

It depends on how much muscle damage and if there was any vascular or nerve damage in the leg as to whether he will play competitively again. Since a big part of his effectiveness as a forward is based on his speed, I'm concerned about his ability to get back to his recent form.

I think he is fortunate to have survived this accident, my thoughts and prayers are with him and I hope for a speedy and full recovery.

I said end of the world, not world cup. ;)

Meaning, he will recover in time and be just fine.

This isn't necessarily so. The lacerated bladder was in all likelihood less of a worry than the femur fracture. If someone injured in an MVA picked up a bladder laceration, it's a sign that the injured party was wearing their seat belt: if you're in a serious accident, and you're wearing your seat belt, 19 times out of 20 you'll pick up a bladder laceration. I provided pre-hospital care at dozens of motor vehicle accidents, and from the patient update we got days or weeks later, "bladder laceration" was a ubiquitous feature of accidents where seat belts were used. They're almost never life-threatening, although they can be made worse if the bladder was full at the time of the accident. Normally, time can be taken to stabilize the patient, and then surgery to fix the laceration or rupture can come hours later.

EDIT: some changes to make things more clear.

Regarding the injuries - and let me first note that I am not a doctor - from my observation of cases of players sustaining major injuries, each break is different, and each person recovers differently. While we can look at Eduardo, Cisse, or Larsson's reasonably good recoveries but those aren't the only cases. Some players never truly recover from their injuries but with advances in medicine the odds of a good recovery are better than before. One thing that worries me is that the comparison with players who have had bones broken on the pitch may make for overly optimistic assumptions about CD's chances. A car accident can apply considerably greater force to a human body than any clumsy or brutish challenge. Since we haven't much info about the details of the breaks we cannot rule out that they may have a character that would not indicate a quick or full recovery. For now we just have to trust the word we are getting from the USSF docs for now, but we aren't exactly sure whether they have the most extensive info to judge his expected recovery either. If they say 6-12 months expected recovery, then this may be the truth, but 6 months is unlikely and even if he was back on the pitch in 6 - 8 months, I would not expect to see him playing in South Africa.

The quote from the USSF doc:
"Injuries of this nature usually require a recovery period of six to 12 months and extensive rehabilitation,"

Having said that, I for one hope against all rational expectation that he will be fit and back to terrorize centerbacks at the WC in 2010 and maybe even help Sochaux avoid the drop.

He's not going to be back for the World Cup. He's very lucky to be alive (the picture of that car is horrible - the kind of thing that makes you wonder how anyone could have survived that). He might have a chance of playing again at some point, but at the same level, not for probably for a couple years if at all. Honestly there's a very good chance his playing career is over, which is awful, but being alive is of course much more important.

Who was the driver and why has the name not been released yet?

Surely the family of the driver has been notified at this point.

    why does it matter?

as you said, i'm sure the family and friends of the driver have been notified, and isn't that all that matters?

Privacy laws. If the family doesn't want her information released then the police and hospital usually don't release that information. And yes, there is a double standard for "famous" people and normal people.

it was good to see this story getting coverage in the news. unfortunate that it has to come to a tragedy for the media to pay attention to soccer, but its good ESPN atleast has been following the story and updating

From Goff's weblog: "Officially, the Park Police is not allowed to identify the survivors"

Since the hospital isn't allowed to identify anyone without family OK, I presume the family hasn't given the OK.

I'm sorry, but the name should be on the accident report. It's public record and one would expect to see this information by now.

It's not public record if the family say no. That's what makes it private. lol

If/When the driver is charged with a crime, it will then be public record and released.

Prayers for the lady and for a speedy and complete recovery for Charlie....

Sorry for the earlier version of this post: I neglected the more recent and up-to-date U.S. reports of this story (Sporting News, etc.) that said there were two passengers and the driver. I ASSumed that it was a 2-person accident, driver and passenger.
