Actually, they very well might have waited if he needed to be stabilized in order to optimize or even survive the surgery. This was already noted above by me and others. Read the thread.

Also, if I understand correctly they didn't wait as long as you said. It was a very long surgery.

Anyway, I'm bothered by the tea-leaf reading about the timing of his surgery -- nutty malpractice type talk on one side, downplaying the injuries talk on the other. The truth is nobody has enough information to offer any intelligent speculation on this point.

This is a horrible reminder that nothing is promised in life. My prayers are out to all those affected by this directly...

I've never felt this torn about someone I didn't directly know.

Wahl just updated. Said USSF has retracted part that said injuries were possibly career threatening.

Yeah that's a bad job by the USSF. No reason to speculate hours after a crash and when someone is in surgery.

It could be an internal injury or a head injury. Sometimes things like that may take time to manifest themselves.

I hope Charlie is OK.

Mario, I am so sorry to hear about your family's tragedy. That is truly awful.

For the sake of clarity for people who may be learning about today's tragedy in realtime and reading backwards, I don't believe there has been any indication that alcohol was involved. Someone correct me if this is wrong. It may turn out to be the case -- although I could easily see it not being so as well -- but at this point that would fall in the category of speculation.

Really not trying to nitpick. Just trying to clarify. And I am deeply sorry for your family's prior loss.

Absolutely horrible news.

My condolences to the families of the deceased, the other passenger and Charlie. Let's hope there's a golden sky for him at the end of this storm. Get well soon.
