Americans, as in people from the United States, are among the most homophobic people in the world.

There are gay professional athletes, they're just scared to death of coming out.

This isn't BigPolitics.com or anything, but that is not at all what is happening to California. You're looking at the wrong people as 'freeloaders.'

This isn't marginally close to correct. Perhaps if you limit the comparison to the developed world this is true, but that attitude is rapidly changing (look at the age group support for gay marriage.

And whoever said white americans blame mexicans for all their problems is a moron of the lowest order and my ethnic group has endured far worse in this country than his.

Actually, you can use the word "bakka" in Japanese (stupid) and you wont burn in hell. But, using it is not polite. Politeness counts in Japan. It needs to. 126 million jammed into a bunch of islands about as big as California, and less space for actual living.

However, "bakka" is about as you can get in Japan. They really dont have swear words or curses in Japanese! (centuries of good manners!)

Sometimes, cultural understanding comes from when we realise that there are things that just dont translate across!

People do get slagged for using abusive language. Having said that, we have all but given up in England with regards UEFA. The FA has been trying hard on racist abuse, and does report it to UEFA. Unfortunately, UEFA only pays lip service to its racism campaigns, and punishes teams with fines of about $20,000. The players make that just by waking up in the morning!

I know what Bakka is. And I know quite a bit of japanese. Or you could just go with むかつく. But thanks for the classes.

You know what the whole thing is. Cultures and languages are different everywhere and what works in one language doesn't work in another. ******** in spanish does NOT mean you are a homophobic! It's a multi-use word.

As for your last paragraph… That's about racism.
First of all… as you saw in a previous vid, the greeks did it to the english and we didn't see 5 threads pop out of nowhere to call the greeks shit people just like americans do with Mexico. SO in that regard… it is not fair treatment of Mexicans. Other can do shit and Mexico can't.
Now… again… your paragraph was about racism. ******** is NOT racist in any way. The ******** thing is again is for fun. It can mean "dumb" (which we all obviously have no problems with as we apparently accept the japanese say it too), or it can mean "chickenshit/that that person has no balls".

Quick thing… FIFA punishes racist behaviour like we all know — No threads in the US forums of about how shit human beings are the Argentine, Greek, Italians, etc…

Mexico does something it is also done in the us and FIFA does not move a finger about it nor cares — Threads pop up in a an instant in the us forums all just to criticize and condescend Mexico. There have been times when 10-15 threads on mexico on a single page.

    Now quite the same, eh?

You people are CLEARLY making such a mastodonic huge deal about this about a culture you all dislike/hate/see as easy targets for criticism, when this culture sells the futbol product to its first target audience… families. Futbol is in way worse shape in south america, europe… tons of racism, violence, insecurity, inability from families or children to attend games, etc… But cmon! Mexico is nowhere near that. It is ridiculous. And then americans are barely wetting their toes in this futbol world and aren't used to any kind of true violence, harsh crowds and stuff like that. You haven't experience enough the whole futbol passion quiet yet… if you don't liek to admit it. Just don't make your beliefs or standards the actual standards worldwide.

This clearly is about the fact that we are talking about "mexico". Period.

You realize you sound exactly the same as people who say they use "gay" or "******" without homosexual connotations. They say it just means stupid. Anyone routinely saying "******" or "********" is most like an uneducated ignorant person. In other words, it doesn't speak much for many Mexican soccer fans.

MarlboroDude, hope you are not levelling all those "you's" at me, given that I aint from the US.

I know what I was talking about was racism. Not homophobia. Fact is, that someone who is gay does not often conform to any kind of visual norm. OK, there are those you can guess at, but even then, its no guarantee! I get this a lot here in Japan! A lot of young men here enjoy a taste in fashion that is definitely more feminine, but given the bevy of attractive girls that hang out with them and join them in frequenting love hotels, their sexuality is not really in question.

Racism is easy to identify, since people attack someone on the basis of their appearance. It is easy to identify, and then take action against. The FA has tried quite hard to do so, unfortunately, this action is not followed at a federal level. UEFA talks about taking on racism, but then hands out fines which, quite frankly, are laughable. There does not seem to be the stomach from UEFA to actually punish teams that would encourage fans to amend their ways.

On occasion teams get ordered to play games behind closed doors, but this is too infrequent. If the punishment for racist behaviour was points deduction/removal from competitions/extended runs of games behind closed doors, then those idiot groups that engage in racist abuse would hopefully realise that their actions are genuinely hurting their team, and would curtail their activities.

With regards homophobia, this gets much harder. After all, the original meaning of the word "gay" is to be happy. This duality allows for legal types to tie up proceedings for long periods of time. Add in the fact that it will be legally doubtful you could 100% guarantee you can identify the target for the abuse since no one on a football field looks "gay." (Yes, there are jokes, but I am trying to be serious here)

Then add in the fact that culturally many words have different connotations, such as ******** in Mexico. With it being anything from homophobic, to coward, to stupid. If I read the list of definitions right. Depending on how it is used. Problem with trying to get FIFA to act on this type of language is you are asking them to essentially become thought police. They have to analyse the word, look at the context, and then make sure that the use was for homophobic reasons. Little difficult to do so!

Should Mexico be punished? Hardly. The language may not be to the best taste, but FIFA cant really take any action since its meaning is less than 100% clear. Racist abuse tends to be clear and easy to punish. This is not. It could simply be the Mexicans trying to put a player off his game.

With regards fans chucking stuff. That should be stopped. Quite frankly, I want to see a football game, not spend half my time watching behind me to keep from getting cold-cocked by a bottle of whatever.

But that is something for another debate.

This doesn't surprise me. I admit that my first-hand experience with the fans of Mexican teams is basically limited to CONCACAF competitions and "Superliga" games involving DC United, but I have noticed that whenever DC is playing Chivas or Pachuca or whoever, there are always lots of families, and the kids have replica kits just like Dad. It's really cool.

We certainly have room for improvement, but this is crazy. There are probably only a handful of cultures in the world with greater acceptance of homosexuals. Try being gay in Eastern Europe. Or just about anywhere in Africa or the Muslim world. Or in India. Or in much of Latin America. There are a handful of Western European countries who probably are more progressive than us...and that's about it.

    No doubt.
