Hey, if it's personal opinion that one wants Raul to start, e-high five. Good for you, have a cupcake. However saying Higauin had a worse pre-season as an argument, is not an opinion because somebody doing worse than another is something which can be shown, and seeing as the arguments thus far are: 1) Raul scored more......while playing more.....and not as good as Higauin when comparing the time played, but whateva 2) Due to some of Higauin's better qualities he can create more chances, but he doesn't score all of them....despite already doing better than Raul...and having better qualities 3) I'm not convinced Not exactly showing he did worse in pre-season at all.
I believe the objectives you refer to are : change his name to Raul, get slower, age untill he gets close to retirement age, score less goals on average, get a haircut. Only when all these objectives have been met, and the real Raul has retired, then he will finally be a starter....for Castilla.
Let's have a show of hands: First, the scenario: It's our first game of the season. At home in The Bernabeu. Many new players on the squad. Perez in the stands. Now for the question: Under those circumstances, how many of you really thought Raul wouldn't be starting? I would have been shocked to see him on the bench for this game.
I believe that is the entire reason of this thread that one wouldn't be surprised to see Raul starting Major, have you skipped all of my boring & repetetive reparté again?
My point, Oscar, is that it's too early for anyone to be saying Raul is an automatic starter after one game in which I'd fully expect him to be started. If he's still starting every game after the month of September is finished, I'll start complaining again.
How many people expect him to be on the bench next game? Cause in all honesty it's kind of stupid benching a player after having a good game. Plus the fact he was the first to be subbed out and as early as the 60th minute should say alot about his untouchable status this season.
He doesn't necessarily need a haircut, a simple shape-up around the edges will do. If he does that I like the kid's chances. Please believe me when I tell you I understand where you're coming from. I just think it's not as cut and dry (that might not be the best phrase) as you are making out to be. I guess as the season progresses we shall see and if my original premise (feelings) are wrong I will admit it as such. But for now I'm off to polish my Raulista Fan Card and come after your puppies
I watching the Juve-Roma game and the commentators mention that Alex Del Piero had not played yet in this Serie A season. This is comparative to our situation with Raul with people saying he should be starting because he did well in meaningless pre-season friendlies against weak opposition. In the Peace Cup game against Juve, Raul was made to look helpless while Del Piero was instrumental in setting up both of Juventus goals. But at Juventus everyone knows that Amauri and Diego are the better options for the AM/SS role and they play even though Del Piero is a captain and legend for them who makes the occasional good play.
When have we used just the one striker? I think we'll get far this season, probably win the league, but as it has been proven in recent years, when it comes to the Champions League we need to play a team to win. In a way I hope Milan find some form this season (and some how players) because we need a test to see where we are at on that level.
A player started and played a good game. It is logic that he will start the next game, regardless if he is Raul or Pavon. And I also agreed that the 60th minute sub is a message. He never got subbed before.
On a lighter note, Raul is 28 league goals away from being the top scorer in La Liga history (probably should be there already if he never had 4 complete shit seasons. Sorry, just a little jab). That would mean he would hold all these titles simotaniously: Top scorer in Real Madrid history Top scorer in the Spanish National Team history Top scorer in UEFA Champions League History Top scorer in European Cup history And, possibly, top scorer in La Liga history. You think he can do it?
Di Stefano( he knows all ) said Raul could play until he's 84 years old... so... that's 53 years of automatic starting. Surely he could score 28 goals.
its possible but he would need to score like 3/4 goals against easy teams to beat that record in just one season.
I don't think its unreasonable for him to get 19-20 goals this season in La Liga. Anymore than that is not very likely, given the wealth of attackers we have. He'll need like four or five games at least next year to break the record.
Look Di Stefano knows Raul can't play that long. Ol' Alfredo is just eyeing a Michael Jordan move. The man clearly wants to come out of retirement.
