Who's the English (probably Irish or Scottish, actually) guy that does the commentary on Gol TV? I've heard him doing the Bundesliga and La Liga matches. There's another guy with him who has no accent if that's any clue. Anyhow, he's a hoot to listen to.
I don't think I've heard him say exactly that, but it seems that everything else he's said is funny. He's the one who was talking about the "magisterial" play of Barcelona and Messi, and went on and on about Grafite's back heel goal a few months ago. If I had to guess, I'd say he sounds more Scottish or Irish than English, tho I know people move around a lot these days.
Okay. So is it Ray Hudson? EDIT: did what I should have done as soon as I was given a name- went to youtube and searched his vids. Yep, that's who it is. This guy's off the damn chain funny. Thanks, and rep to the both of you.
Ray is my favorite as well. He had a not so successful stint as head coach for DC United back in 02-03.
It seems like a lot of people don't like Ray Hudson as a commentator, but as a person, he's damn funny. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ray_Hudson#Coaching <-- must read. Anyway, back when he was coaching DC, he made a stop in Columbus. After the game, as was (and still is) tradition, the post-game press conference was broadcast on the stadium videoboard for fans to watch. Some of his comments included statements similar to "Columbus is a DAMN good football team" and "they scared the piss out of me." (I forget the exact score, but I think DC had either won or tied, but he was indicated the level of potential Columbus had.) I was watching the post-game press conference from the concourse directly beneath the videoboard with a group of DC fans. Every time he "semi-swore", the DC fans went nuts, and starting banging their drums and cheering. Little did he know that it was Cub Scout Night at Crew Stadium. This entailed (and still does) many scouts attending a Crew game, then watching a post-game movie on the videoboard before retiring to their on-site tents for the night. Needless to say, he got a phone call from the league the next day. League headquarters was NOT happy about him making those comments. Several years later, I asked him about that nightover beer and pizza. He said "Yeah, the league was PISSED." His defense was that "if I had known about the scouts, I wouldn't have said that."
Wow. Like Cub Scouts don't already use that language as soon as they're out of their parents' earshot..
I think there's three different possibilities here: 1) It might have been more the fact that he did it (when he was in an official capacity as a head coach) rather than the audience. If he was cursing in front of his kid's friends while watching a match on TV one Wednesday afternoon, that would be an entirely different situation. But when he's representing the team and league? Different story. 2) It also seems like he has an uncensored, tell-it-like-it-is attitude about some things and still said that stuff. He didn't know the conference was telecast though. Had he known it was telecast, he would have censored himself. 3) He would have said that stuff if it wasn't telecast, even though he was in the official capacity. I'm betting that had he known it was telecast, he would have watched his language, no matter who the audience. If it wasn't telecast, he would have said exactly what was on his mind. The trouble probably came from the fact that it was telecast and he was in an official capacity.
Hah, agreed. I love everything about Ray Hudson. I understand a fair amount of people can't stand him, but I would rate him as the best color commentary guy we get out of FSC/GolTV/ESPN.
don't forget the Fusion! I remember them interviewing him on local TV. Great interview. I guess he liked it so much that he's sticking with GolTV in Miami. I have a love/hate relationship with Hudson. I appreciate his out-of-left-field idioms or metaphors or whatever, some of which you really have to think about and laugh at the creativity. But it's the other 80% of the game - the interrupting play by play, the "ay-ays" and the "oooohs" I think him in a studio show would be excellent, except the part where he gets stubborn and will not concede a point (saw that on American Soccer more than a few times)
