Actually, knowing some of the core guys in ESC as well, I have never known a group more hard done by and truer, for them sticking it out with that never ending turnstile of managers, sucky results, and security mistreatment. They have proven their worth time and again by sticking by their local team even though it would be easier to give up on MLS altogether. The BBs are nice guys, but the ESC have toiled and paid their dues. They deserve success in the stands once they finally move into their new building. I think the North Jersey/NYC area deserves their soccer legacy back and it was called the New York Cosmos and they most famously played in Giants Stadium. I don't think NYC2 has any more claim to the Cosmos name than NY/NJ1.
yeh, obviously there's quite a few ahead in the que now. particularly St.Louis. but 5 years down the line. a DC, NYC Cosmos, NY MetroBulls, Philly Union quadrupel rivalry thing goin on? that would be cool. The intense competition would drive the league standard right up. it is pretty sickening to see so many just give up on their NYRB team but after one bad season, after all the work that other teams put into starting up.
for the hardcore... not so sure that the majority of them would want a change to Cosmos though - I think they would ideally like "Empire Soccer Club" as the team name, or failing that the "New York Metros". I think they consider the Red Bull thing as a temporary sponsorship distraction covering over an underlying club, the empire club / metros, which will always be there no matter the sponsors and will one day return. Cosmos is a different thing really - I suppose some of them supported it back in the day, but its not really them on the whole. Eventually, in the future, it might become realistic as NY2?
Err, I forget the unofficial name, but it's supposed to be a bastardization of the Buffalo Bills + NE Revolution. Logo mashup (courtesy of Bolton)
Wouldn't that require someone to care about the Revs? Because that might be a dealbreaker right there.
True. I don't know which has more credibility, a fictitious NY2 team that will most likely never happen or the New Englerland BuffaRevoluBills.
Wow, look at all I missed by being away all day. And really I have nothing constructive to add but pull-out jokes. Didn't stop me from posting though, did it?
While the name "Cosmos" is like an orgasmatron to some BS posters, the team was only around for 14 seasons. Next year it will have no more tradition than Colorado Rapids and the KC Wizards.
I like having a Philly vs NY rivalry going! We live in the Philly area and are within driving distance to 2 of the best soccer only stadiums in the country! You have to love that!Personally, I like the Euor style NY stadium better than ours!
There are only five teams left that have had the same name and identity since 1996, since the Wiz, Clash, Burn, Mutiny and MetroStars are no more. And yet the L.A. Galaxy still call themselves that...weird.
But the "brand" has stayed in existence since the team folded, as evident by the apparel still available for purchase.
I would not want to soil the Cosmo name with this shoddy run club. Speaking of shoddy run clubs, it never made any sense to me how the RB team has one 2 of the last 3 Austrian Bundesliga titles, while this team can't do crap. There obviously is enough money to make the club better. Meanwhile, Red Bull invested in two other clubs (Brazil and Germany) but both of those are lower level clubs. In the meantime, my friend from the Philly area keeps telling me to become a Union supporter because RB is a shadow of what it once was. And he is right, if RB does not come in with wholesale changes between now and the off season, and leaves the below pub league caliber team on the pitch, then RB, no matter how fancy and cool the stadium looks, are dead to me.
Neither did the MetroStars. Renaming the Metros the "Cosmos" makes about as much sense as renaming them the "SuperFriends" on the theory that them people will think Batman plays for them.
It seems to me that Empire Soccer Club is an awesome name, but only if the team is actually playing in New York (since that is the "Empire State, not NJ). So that would be appropriate for a team in NYC or Long Island if that happened. If RBNY gets sold and rebrands, I would think New York Metro would be good or buying out the Cosmos name would make sense (especially since, as noted, the NASL team mostly played in Giants Stadium/New Jersey so the tradition is there).
Repped! Great minds think alike I think this is really an attempt to rebrand them as "Gotham" and tie them in with NJ's greatest attraction, SixFlags, which featured Batman rides. I will now re-join Bryan, Dave & Travis in wearing our hats while listening to the Art Bell Coast to Coast radio show .
