Israel are doing no better than Sweden in the Europa cups at the moment and their UEFA league ranking is just about the same... In any case they always seem to get eliminated when they face Scandinavian teams... So considering that IFK were unseeded, the other options seemed more difficult (PSV Eindhoven, AaB, Donetsk from Ukraine and PAOK from Greece) ... Elfsborg were also among the unseeded, so Braga is not that bad an opponent...

Btw... I can see that Hapoel Tel-Aviv narrowly beat AIK (0-0 and 1-0) to qualify for the UEFA Cup group stage in 2007/08, but in the group stage they lost 1-3 at home to AaB Aalborg and finished last in their group...

Yes indeed Ceres. But danish sides are frankly much better than swedish sides. As is norwegian teams for that matter. We are close to the same level as the Finnish league soon...
A team like IFK are having serious problems with injuries at the moment, as well. This team will most likely not win the league now. Bjärsmyr and Wernbloom sold. Adam Johansson, Nicklas Carlsson are injured.
Kalmar look dead and burried, lol.
Elfsborg might get lucky against Braga if they get passed Haladas.
And to be frank with you Ceres, I am rooting for all Scandinavian sides.

Go Scandinavia! Especially IFK and Aab;)!

FC København and Stabæk were the only Scandinavian clubs that progressed from this 2nd qualifying round, though Swedish Kalmar FF came very close, but was eliminated on away goals... quite unfortunate actually, since Levadia Tallinn from Estonia surprisingly managed to eliminate Wisla Krakow from Poland and would have been Kalmars next opponent, if they had managed to progress....

Dammit, RBK is out. I was hoping we would go to Azerbaijan and pile up goals, but it was not to be. The inability to score at home cursed RBK for sure. This was a big upset.

Well, time to focus on winning Tippeligaen and getting that Champions League spot.

Not a good day for Norway abd Denmark, since both Rosenborg and AaB Aalborg quite shockingly were knocked out by their opponents from Azerbaijan and Bosnia... or perhaps it was not quite as big a surprise that Aalborg were eliminated, because the past many games they have not been able to secure a win and they have also made considerable changes in their team this summer on request from their new Swedish head coach... and to be honest, their newly signed replacements did not perform well in this match, which again will make the head coach look bad, since the Aalborg management have more or less signed exactly the players he has asked them to get. Rosenborg on the other hand, do not have any real excuse for their defeat..

HJK Helsinki from Finland were also surprisingly eliminated at home by Vetra Vilnius from Lithuania, after having made a good result in their first leg away game...On the positive side the two other Finnish sides managed to progress and since Rosenborg were eliminated, Honka Espoo now got a much easier path to a 4th qualifying round, facing Quarabag Agdam from Azerbaijan. Both Swedish sides survived, though Helsingborgs IF only were minutes from being eliminated by FC Zestafoni from Georgia. The only big positive surprise of the day was Icelandic KR Reykjavik eliminating Larissa from Greece.. So congrats to Iceland :).

Firstly I am so surprised still Ålborg couldn´t go through despite their awful form. They should go through anyway and I am frankly extremely frustrated right now over this:mad:!!

Secondly I am convinced all three swedish clubs goes out. Normally they should probably loose against these opponents. Maybe Helsingborg can get lucky again:confused: against a bosnian team...

Good luck to all the Scandinavian teams....and ohhh shame on Rosenborg:mad:! The world is up side down!

2008/09 UEFA Champions League, third qualifying round :

FC København (Den) v Stabæk (Nor), 3-1
    1-0 Jesper Grønkjær (11)
    2-0 Cesar Santin (41)
    2-1 Palmi Rafn Palmason (58)
    3-1 Cesar Santin (80)

Though Stabæk put up a good fight and had their moments where they were able to keep up with FCK and produce some huge opportunities, it was still FCK being in charge in most of the match, so they won quite deserved even if they did not play one of their better games. But it was FCK dominating from start and they could have been 2-3 goals in the lead before Stabæk were able to create their first big opportunity. Especially Ailton Almeida should have scored on a close range effort, but the attempt was saved by the Stabæk keeper. However, it was FCK pushing forward and as expected it didnt take long before they took the lead... Though as the match progressed, the visitors also got their moments were they were able dominate, but you still had the feeling that FCK was able to step up their game a level when they were in trouble... and so they did... Still, both teams seemed quite vulnerable in defense at times and both FCK and Stabæk managed to hit the woodwork and also produced some huge opportunities they should have been able make much better use of, so it would probably have been more telling if the match had ended 4-2 or 5-3... never the less, a 3-1 victory seemed quite fair, looking at ball possession and the big opportunities that was created, besides the four goals.... As for the return leg, then Stabæk got the advantage of playing on artificial turf, but FCK are on the other hand usually as strong, if not actually stronger, away from home, which they also showed in last seasons Europa cups.

Stabæk was the better team in Copenhagen, but you can't expect at danish lad to admit that i guess. On a normal day Stabæk woukd have won that match. And you danish need to stop talking about Drillo-footall. No team here has played that kind of football since the national team under Drillo (yes, he is back for a short while), and FCK showed us that dansih football is behind norwegians when it comes to attactive attacking. Rosenborg, Stabæk, Molde, Brann, Start, Tromsø and some times even VIF play nice football to watch.

I saw Randers on EuroSport today, and that was not a good team.

Fredrikstad lost 6-1 against Lech, but that is a team in trouble these days. They have problems both on an of the pitch.

Can't really evaluate Randers in a game against HSV tho. I'd wager that almost any Scandinavian team would look like amateurs against opposition at that level - and do note that Randers isn't exactly a good team by Superliga-standards either, they're in the Europa League due to fairplay award, not due to league performance.

Regarding the FCK-Stabæk game, FCK played a horrible game, tbh. I'm in no way a fan of the club, but they usually play a lot better than that. Still, they won 3-1 while playing probably their worst game of 2009. I wouldn't say Stabæk was the better team as such, they seemed pretty equal to me - but I can't say how much of that was due to FCK failing their passing and sleeping defensively and how much was due to actual quality in Stabæk's squad.

IFK Göteborg played their worst match I have ever seen. They are struck by three notable injuries and they sold two starplayers abroad. Aweful performance by IFK Göteborg:mad:!!! If they are to play good in Europe they must be able to keep players like Wernbloom and Bjärsmyr. Amateurs!

Brann played HSV under two years ago in the UEFA Cup group stage. We lost at home, 0-1, but played an allright match against them.

My point is that it seems like dansih people believe that norwegian football is behind the danish. I'm pretty shure thats not the case. Our national team is struggeling, but the league is doing better. I consider the norwegian league to be stronger than the swedish and about equal to the dansih league.

I kind of miss Royal League, casue playing swedish, and particularly danish clubs was fun.

I would call our performance at home loosing 3-1 as close to being a fiasko as well even if our league generally is crappy?! I guess you don´t agree if one looks at it strictly statistically. But I was at the game and we definately played our worst football for very long, believe me. As I wrote in my earlier reply, we can´t continue like this in swedish football, selling our best players, if we are to make some kind of mark in Europe. Besides this we have f. example an NT-player like Adam Johansson injured. Yeah Christmas comes early this year.

    Frustration is just the fore-word!

    Please, stop the Norwegian bias...

FCK played rather poorly, but probably still had around 60% ball possesson. They also produced more shots on target than Stabæk... You could of course argue that Stabæk should have scored on the opportuntity that hit the top bar and also on a few of their other big attempts... but the fact of the matter is that these attemps were saved by the FCK keeper/defense, just as the Stabæk keeper/defense saved some just as big opportunities by FCK... each team had a shot on the woodwork, and when Stabæk finally managed to score, FCKs Zdenek Pospech had just misused an identical opportunity... so no, on a normal day FCK could easily have scored 5-6 goals instead of 3 and Stabæk could have scored 3-4 instead of one, which again makes the result quite fair.... unless of course you chose to look through your Norwegain glasses and only see the big Stabæk opportunities that was misused and totally disregard all the big FCK opportunities...

..again you show your Norwegian bias...

First you say that Randers is not a good team and then make the excuse that Fredrikstad lost because it's a team is in trouble and in poor shape....

First of all, you cant really compare the two results, because Hamburger SV is atleast a level or two better than Lech Poznan... secondly, If you had looked at the danish league table, then you would have noticed that Randers is in a worse shape in compare with Fredrikstad in the Norwegian league, so it does not make any sense to make excuses for Fredrikstad and then attack Randers for just being poor..

Quite right... No scandinavian team can expect to beat a team like Hamburger SV, unless they are in top shape, which Randers obviously is not at the moment...

Or perhaps I should remind the Norwegians that the last time they faced a German team in Europe, Rosenborg lost both home and away to Schalke 04 (in 2007/08) and HSV finished 5th in the Bundesliga last season, while Schalke 04 finished 8th... and the year before they finished side by side in the league table.

FCK got a much better squad than Stabæk or any other team in Scandinavia, which is also why they were able to win 3-1 without playing all that well... which is the trademark of of big teams, because they have better players. So ther are always 2 or 3 playing a good game and making the difference, while small teams need all their key players to be at the top of their game to beat the big teams...

So I dont really think the match was even in any way... FCK just stepped up their game a level each time they seemed to be in trouble.... and that was enough to secure a 3-1 result...

The funny part is than Norwegians like you keep saying that Danes are bias against Norwegain football, when the fact is that ther actually is no proof or sign that the Norwegian league is on pair with the Danish league or as good as you want to think it is ... Looking at the Europa cup results/rankings and the export/import of players from the bigger leagues, then the facts rather show that it's the Norwegians who are bias against Danish league, thinking it's not as good as it really is :

    http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2011.html

The actual results in Europe the past 3 seasons show that the Danish league has been taking a giant leap forward, while the Norwegian results are not really improving... The Danish league has also had a much bigger export and import of players from the big leagues of Europe, which clearly indicate that ther actually are better players to find in the Danish league. So looking at the fact and figures, the bias seem to be on the Norwegian side...

I think most Danish newspapers agree that Stabæk played some nice football against FCK... and I can see on Norwegian forums that some Norwegians feel very proud of the Stabæk performance... and I also agree that it is nice to see a Norwegian club play a good away game in Europe, but if you really took of your "Norwegian glasses" then Stabæk did infact lose 1-3 and were never close to actually win that game, just as both you and I know that Stabæk does not really represent the average quality/style of play you see in the Norwegian league, while FCK has just started their season, being a bit up and down, looking very rusty in defense in their danish league games (they lost 0-2 to FCN, that is regarded to be a smaller team than Randers), so they are very clearly not at the top of their game right now. ...

I know that some Norwegians (and Swedes for that matter) like to think that ther are only 1-3 good teams in Denmark while you like to believe you have more depth in Norway (and Sweden) so that your league is actually on pair or perhaps even better than the danish league, but this is just fundamentally wrong... Aalborg did not even finish in the top half of the Danish league table last season, but still progressed from both the Champions league group stage and reached the 4th Round of the UEFA Cup... Perhaps the top team from Norway and Sweden could match the Aalborg performance if they were in absolute top shape, but no mid table club from the Swedish or Norwegian league would be able to do the same...

But then I do not have to argue about the quality of the Scandinavian leagues because I can just let the UEFA ranking do the talking :

    http://www.xs4all.nl/~kassiesa/bert/uefa/data/method4/crank2010.html

    12 Denmark 24.850
    19 Norway 16.600
    23 Sweden 13.566

This ranking does not reflect the actual league quality, but more the quality of the best teams in the league that usually do well in Europe...

So the interesting part is what this league ranking would look like if we removed the absolute strongest Europa Cup team from each of the leagues... because it would give you a better clue about how good the more average league teams are in Scandinavia, So I now remove all FCK results from the danish ranking and all the Rosenborg results from the Norwegian ranking and finally Helsingborg from the Swedish ranking, because they have better results in Europe than the rest of the Swedish teams the past 5 seasons ... The league ranking then look like this :

    Denmark 21.875
    Norway 13.000
    Sweden 11.583
    ---

So really no major difference,... and proof that the Danish league is not mainly about 1-2 top teams, but actually has more depth and is better from top to bottom...

Btw, if it really was so that a team like Randers was as poor as you would like to think they are, then why do you think their squad is valued higher at German transfermarkt.de, than all the teams in the Tippeliga, except for Rosenborg ?...

Ceres, nothing about the crowd trouble at BIF? From what I'm reading, there's controversy about flares that injured two children, along with five Legia supporters who have been arrested. Ekstra Bladet (I know, I know) seemed to imply that there was a chance that Faxe Tribunen (the supporters' area) could be closed.

Any thoughts or anything more you can add for those of us who have poor Danish skills?

The 2 injured children + one seriously injured adult, was because some idiot Brøndby supporters from 'Faxe-tribunen ' (Brøndby supporters' area) were shooting and throwing fireworks/flares at 'Familie-tribunen' (the area for Brøndby supporters with small children)... I dont really know more than you can read here :

...but to me it seems that the stadion security had their main focus on keeping the Legia supporters under strict control, so they did not have time to search for fireworks among the Brøndby supporters... which was a huge mistake...

Not at all :) ... The 'lack of depth' claim is just something you often see in Norwegian soccer forums and at times also in Swedish forums...

I think the reason for this is that the top 2-3 teams in the Superliga often seem to break away and take a solid lead at the end of the season... and then when a team like HB Køge lose 7-1 to FCK this is also used as "evidence" of a poor Danish league, mainly because ppl forget that the smaller teams in the Superliga hardly ever lose by this much and actually also produce a few big surprise results themself at times... (Just look at newly promoted Silkeborg )... However, over 33 rounds the top teams just show that they got more depth, are more experienced and perform at a more consistent high level ..

But look at the top clubs in Norway. Rosenborg is back on top, and you can't find a scandinavian club with more continuity in Europe and in the home league. The exit from Europa League was highly suprising to everybody. Behind Rosenborg you got Vålerenga, Brann, Lillestrøm and Viking, who are all teams to be recond with, and are all clubs who was fairy good results in Europe to look back at. And every year we see at least one or two clubs who preform better than first expected.

There is a ongoing discussion at VGDiskutér about the difference between danish and norwegian football. Mabye it would be intersting for those who understand norwegian (or dansih).

Not that I don't agree with you overall, but I wouldnt use that site as a fact in this matter. For one I'd guess a german site have much closer connection with danish football than it would with swedish and norwegian. And it's already proven wrong with Diouf's transfer to Manchester United at twice his set "player value". Diouf and Thioune alone are most likely worth the total amount set on Molde at transfermarkt.
