Whenever we want to. It's not likely we'll sign any MLS free agents until after the season ends, though--same for USL players and anyone else in a summer league.

In all likeliness he would be.

He is the most decisive player playing in Brazil right now. If he was not a 32 year old with a history of serious injury problems and have a hefty price tag, he'd be on his way to europe.

    Re: Success in Year One

I was walking around town today at work looking at the people on the street taking a toll of what they were wearing.

People wearing Phillies gear - Too many to count

People wearing Eagles gear - 1

People wearing Flyers gear - 0

People wearing Sixers gear - 0

People wearing Union gear - 2

A note- the Union people were not together (one was in Rittenhouse Square, he had a hat and a t-shirt, the other was near City Hall, t-shirt). Let the tally begin.

Not bad at all...but baseball is the only sport in season so it's not a huge deal.

They'd make him buy two seats on the plane, though.

    Re: 2009 Expansion Draft

Seattle's first player was Sebastian Le Toux, who at the time was playing for the USL Sounders. He was signed 8 May 2008, 6 months before the Expansion Draft. Sanna Nyassi was also signed around the same time.

Keller and Ljundberg were added on 14 August 2008 and 28 October 2008 respectively.

So Union is a little behind what Seattle did, but not too much. I would say Keller and Ljundberg (and Moreno) were by far bigger and more important signings for them. And we haven't hit those dates yet.

Well, so much for that... http://voices.washingtonpost.com/soccerinsider/2009/07/arnoux_to_england.html?wprss=soccerinsider

Yes, Ellinger's first of many, many dumb-dumb mistakes at RSL. In fact, when they announced this pick, I literally groaned in frustration at the decision. Who was looked over for this pick? Brad Guzan (ugh...), Michael Parkhurst (man...). Chris Rolfe , Gonzalo Segares...etc, just to name a few. Depressing. Don't make the same mistake Peter!

    Re: 2009 Expansion Draft

I thought Nyassi wasn't signed until after August as well. And the only reason the Sounders could sign Le Toux when they did is that he was playing for the USL Sounders at the time and didn't have to wait until after the season to move. Since we don't have an active team, so I wouldn't expect the Union to sign a player that early.

    Re: 2009 Expansion Draft

I think as well, that the earliest we can "sign" someone currently under contract would be within 6 months of the end of their contract, ala Beckham agreeing to his deal with the Galadies before his Milan contract was done, but before the end of the season. Of course, that's a european rule, so may not apply to MLS... but it would likely apply if we are looking at a currently european based DP.

It was Real Madrid and not Milan but you're correct. And there's no free agency in MLS really.

    Re: 2009 Expansion Draft

MLS Cup was on November 23rd so the protected players lists were due the day after the season ended. This season, MLS Cup is November 22nd so, if they follow last year's format, we can expect to find out about protected players on November 23rd with the expansion draft on the the 25th.

    In other words, you're right.

Not sure about Nyassi, I just remember he and Le Toux were at a meet and greet with fans before Keller was signed. He, like Le Toux were USL Sounders. And you are correct, they were signed because they were USL Sounder players. But Sounders could have signed Keller or Ljundberg any time. Just like Union can do now. And even Keller's later date of mid-August is coming up, so Union can start any time now to start signing players. With Gros and Nowak in place I bet they can start soon.

Has Nowak/Gros been seen scouting players during the GC (besides the Philly game)?

Who Should the First/Second Signing Be?

So theres a lot of discussion about potential players for the Union and we can all start speculating about expansion and superdraftees. But those all important first few signings can definitely set a tone for the team and provide some great exposure. So the question is, staying as realistic as possible, who are the first two players the Union should sign, and when would you do it? (You may include one DP signing)

Im tossing in a vote for Pavel Nedved. He's already looking at MLS, and hes a proven attacking threat with great passing ability. He's DP money, but not gonna break the bank. And I'd sign him before someone else does, so in the next 2-3 weeks.

Re: Who Should the First/Second Signing Be?

BOBBY CONVEY. The kid is talented, and has already said he wants to be here in Philly. He's working with Starfinder a little bit, and it would be GREAT to have a Philly hometown guy here with the club as the first signing. I'm not sure if he needs to be a DP or not, but then I'd like to get a striker or a holding midfielder.

I've already said that I like the idea of Fat-naldo coming here... I think he's LETHAL. I would NOT want to see a guy like Riquelme. I think his pace is anti-Philly.

What about a guy like (dare I say it...) Torrado?

    >>gag<<

    >>gag<<

    >>RALPH!!!<<

Or a nice big, big, technical European? A Bundis-midi or a guy from Seria A (both leagues have good work rate legacies on the defensive side). How about a Dutch league player? Any clockwork orange folk... aside, from Seedorf, who apparently is NOT coming, according to St. Nick.

    What about a Brit?

I'll through one last name out there and see what you think - if Zizou said he would play in Philly, would you want to sign him?

    There... that's my $.02

With Convey and Nedved, we would wreak total havoc on the wings. Any chances Convey would could be had for less than DP money? I mean... his career is sorta in rebuild mode after those injuries at Reading.

Re: Who Should the First/Second Signing Be?

I really hope we DONT go for an aged star like Nedved or Ronaldo for a first signing. We need someone to build a team around that will be a framework for the future. I would suggest we look into someone in the 23-26 age range from a Western European/Scandinavian leage, English/Spanish/Italian/German 2nd league, or South American. Perhaps a versatile midfielder or strong defender.

I like to follow the college draft, and would just really hope for some mid-atlantic school grads, who were hopefully from the mid-atlantic, too.

As far as foreigners, what nationalities predominate in the Philly tri-state? Irish? Italian? Look at those leagues, then.

Re: Who Should the First/Second Signing Be?

I understand your thinking but look at what Beckham did a couple of years ago... yeah, yeah, I can't stand the guy but he's a recognizable name. They sold 25,000 seats (something like that) at RFK when Galaxy played DC United that first year.

So ok, we don't really base our whole team around one aged star, but maybe for marketing purposes, we add a recognizable name like Ronaldo. Just a thought.
