I'm thinking this is Montreal, and all throughout the interview I was waiting for one of the Fox guys to ask him about it, but he brought it up without prompting. So now, it seems, it is all but confirmed that MLS expects to announce the 19th team this year.

So,.. will it be Montreal?

Will it be 2011 or 2012?

Interesting to say the least.

It's gotta be Montréal, with the way Joey Saputo has expressed confidence in recent weeks. No other city has said anything at all. Who else could it be?

Seeing as how Garber stated 19th team, it seems to finally refute all of the speculation regarding a team moving to Mtl or Montreal replacing the Timber's bid. So based on that, if it is 2011, then we're looking at 3 teams in one year. Granted, like Seattle this year, they all will have pre-existing bases to draw the core of their team from thus easing the burden on the existing MLS squads.

1) Highly doubtful or Arthur Blank is beyond good at keeping such a thing quiet
2) Even if Atlanta gets it, rumor has it the team will get dumped in Kennesaw. I think it's possible to put a soccer stadium farther away from more soccer fans in Atlanta, but it would involve sitting it between two runways at the airport.

That's what I wanna know. If you say St. Louis, while I hear positive things about the market, MLS has been decidedly lukewarm to outright cold. If you say NY2, I can see that one but there would have to be an owner step forward and Wilpon looks less and less likely.

If I knew that - i would gladly let it be known - but after all that hoopla with the bidding process - they expand again - with no bids! Most likely going to be Monteal - makes me think - they have a plan!

St Louis - Yes but for some reason - the league isnt turned on by this market - not arguing if they are right are wrong - I like Sport Billy too! But I just dont know why the league is so against this market!

NY - Yes - the League wants it - We Know that - EVERYONE KNOWS THAT! If a bid came in - NY2 would happen BUT who is the investor. While I still hear that Wilpon is not OUT OF IT (take it for what its worth) he has bene quite and the Economy, Madoff and the Mets sucking have a lot to do why he has been soooo quite!

Atlanta - Yes - Blank wants a team, South East is not represented - That is a wild card. This is the type of City that can come out of no where with a bid!

Miami - You will hear this again - im sure of that!

Those are probably your 4 main candidates -- rumors are going to run rampard but I really think in the grand scheme of things - Garber knows WHO he wants!

For this thread! I really think the IMpact is in - and deservingly so! Great fan base - great rivalry with TO - it would be a solid pick!

For once MLSR might actually be right for a change. The only caveat is the shoe that has yet to drop; the 25 million in funding from the Quebec govt.

I believe they originally kept 7 that were on the 2008 USL squad and currently have 6. A considerable amount, so if you just take the lower number among the three coming in that's at least 18 players that the existing MLS teams don't have to worry about giving up for expansion. Saputo's remarks have also intimated that he won't need so many new players to start with in 2011. I feel that he plans to keep more of his existing team than Seattle did.

I think the Kennesaw thing is over for MLS, unless KSU's new stadium is expandable (and what about the Beat?). It's more likely that Atlanta MLS would play at the Georgia Dome, until either a soccer/football stadium is built somewhere for both them and the Falcons, or one for each is built (possible, but unlikely).

But that's just me. Your source may be better than mine (me, just speculating ).

Couldn't they play at Stade Saputo as is, and expand as they go? They'd have almost a guaranteed sellout for every game, and a waiting list for season tix.

Yeah they could play there tomorrow and easily still be enough for MLS. They probably can start expanding at the end of this season and have plenty of time for 2011. The plans for expansion have been set for a few years already. All they need to do is get the go-ahead from MLS.

I read on the Montreal expansion candidate forum that someone thought the Stade Sapudo expansion could be done in less than a year. If that is true, then it is definitely 2011. Either way, Montreal is the only possible city they can announce unless someone has been really quiet.

Could they, yes. Will MLS accept it? Not sure about that. Perhaps if there was a guarantee that it would be expanded within a year, but that would likely still require the approval for funding.

I'm guessing that, once the approval is given, MLS will announce Montreal. This whole out-of-the-blue statement by Garber looks for all the world like a now-familiar carrot to a governmental entity, the semi-official word to the Province that the franchise is there if they fork over the cash.

If team #19 is anywhere else, I'll be absolutely shocked.

we shall see
Portland and Vancouver also plan to use their current players as a base for their MLS franchises.

From their play against Seattle and TFC they are not that far behind before adding additional players. I think sometimes we over estimate the MLS and under estimate USL1

Seattle was a championship-calibre team in USL and only a quarter of their roster is holdovers. Vancouver is a championship-calibre team in USL. Portland is a point out of first in USL-1, so they're a very good USL-1 team. But "base?" I don't know about that. Some parts? Sure.
