You must not have been in the parts of Durham that I've been to and not seen some parts of France that others have seen. Although it is true that Carrboro > Durham.
Can we please stop bickering over if Davies is going be able to find prostitutes locally or have to drive to Germany? I really don't know much about sochaux except that they are so-so...ha! Looks they have been doing a bit of signing and it doesn't look like he's stepping into a Monaco situation where they have 7 other players playing his role... so that's good.
Folks, the comparisons of Sochaux to my lovely adopted city are both puzzling and way, way off-topic. It's reasonable to point out that Sochaux is a tiny, industrial town of some 4,000 souls and that a twenty-something professional soccer player might opt to live elsewhere. We've had plenty of similar discussions in relation to other YAs. Editorializing on the perceived romanticism of French small town life vis-a-vis the perceived decadence of American semi-urbanism is less reasonable, given the context of this thread. With that, let's cut short this digression. Thanks.
Fair enough. I was thinking more of the smaller southern cities that do offer quite a bit of character and many can be quite interesting. The suburbs I can live without. In any case, Sochaux isn't really my cup of tea, but it is not an island and I am sure Davies will make out just fine. It may be better with fewer distractions at his age.
Like omgz, you've been to Europe? I bet NOBODY on this forum has been there. I know many Europeans who say that they love the forward-looking mentality of US cities as opposed to European cities, especially the smaller ones, that are often almost-constrictively entrenched in history and old sets of values. It's really a matter of preference so don't go and pretend that one is inherently better than the other. My favorite cities in the world are San Diego, Canberra, Sydney, Wicklow, Edinburgh, Bordeaux, and Rennes, a little variety never killed anyone. If I had the choice to live in Sochaux or Stockholm, or San Diego, or Los Angeles, and as long as I had the choice of equal jobs (Charlie does not, Sochaux is a clear step up) Sochaux would be last on that list despite it being a really nice town. Anyways, glad that Charlie Davies is going to France. This gives me another opportunity to try to work on my French by reading a French forum before I inevitably give up like I did with Boca and Freddy.
YES. Finally some ********ing confirmation, I was worried this wouldn't go through. Absolutely stoked for the kid, I just hope he gets some playing time. I understand there are 2 strikers (19 and 25), who have a decent scoring record for them already, so hopefully Charlie takes his chances and shows the Frenchies what he can do.
Carrboro is WAY > than Durham. There's just something inherently wrong about the city of Durham... ...but I can't seem to remember what that is right off the top of my head... I just can't see why anyone would want to live in Durham... Heck, even though West Village is a cool place and the DBAP, I get nauseated going there for some reason. On a serious note, I hope Charlie does well and sees plenty of playing time this coming year. I hope, especially with this being a World Cup year, that our players are making moves that won't prevent them from seeing the field. There's not time to go to France or Italy (Gooch) and sit for six months.
I love Durham. (and NOT because of Duke.....Go Pack!) Good for Davies. From what I hear, France is very defensive-minded, so I suppose it'll be challenging (in a good way) for the speedy fella? It also seems to me that he could use some refinement on his touch/ball skills, so hopefully that'll improve.
Here are the four players wikipedia lists as strikers for Sochaux. Keep in mind that Erdinc, who was their main striker last season, was just sold to PSG. And Santos, who was their third choice striker last season, just finished out the end of his contract. And, Sochaux mostly played with two strikers last season. -Sverkos, who is a 25 year old Czech international that scored in last year's Euro's, had 8 goals in 19 appearances for Sochaux last season. I'm guessing he starts. -Privat, who is a 19 year old French U-21 player, had 4 goals last season in 15 appearances. -Traore is a 29 year old Ivory Coast international who spent last season on loan to Strasbourg in Ligue 2, where he scored 4 goals in 13 appearances. -Some French player named Previtali does not appear to be in the picture at all. He was loaned out to a Championnat side a couple seasons ago, but I'm not sure where he's been since then.
On his twitter page Davies can't confirm the move as of yet. And I confirm that yes, Fire and Ice is a real nice restaurant.
I would call F&I a real 'fun' restaurant...pretty cool take on Mongolian BBQ. I wonder if he's showing the rest of the boys some of his old stomping grounds. I wish I could make it into the city!
I think it'd be a good move. A solid chance to start and good defenders to play against a lot of the time. Way more than at Hammarby.
Oh, there's no question that Ligue 1 is top quality 'football' CD is going to be tested week in and week out. The prostitutes are top notch in France as well!
I'd neg rep you for that . . . but I have to spread rep around before giving you any, yada yada yada.
ESPN has picked up on the L'Equipe article. http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=659997&sec=americansabroad&cc=5901 Surely this deal deal will be finished within a few days.
This is great for Charlie. He deserves it. Anyone know how the coverage is for Sochaux games? Will we be able to get some streams?
There are NO deal with Sochaux (Friday 10 July 1500 GMT), so there are still no way CD will go there forzza Bajen

Nope, and it's not all that great of a restaurant to boot. So, maybe it has something in common with Pat Benatar. After overrated restaurants in Boston and living in Sweden, maybe Charlie discovers better food in France. Then again, he might not find an all-you-can-eat joint like Fire & Ice.
