That place looks pretty good. Technically it is a block east of the Zona Rosa but it is close enough. $35 sounds like a steal if it is anywhere as good as the reviews on TripAdvisor say. The Metro is only MEX$2 (about US$0.30) per ride and it will take you everywhere you need to go. You'll be able to get by on less than $10 for transport during the trip. Food is up to you, but it is also relatively cheap. Match ticket is anyone's guess at this point, but should be well under $50. Hmm, depends on the person but your $150 ticket/food/taxi above could cover it easily.
For those of you who haven't seen, there were some interesting information posted on Twitter about this match in the last two days: First, Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl: http://twitter.com/#search?q=grantwahl "Ha! Mexican Fed sets 3 pm kickoff time (4 pm ET) on a WEEKDAY for huge USA-Mexico WCQ on Wed Aug 12. Smog and heat! ¡¡¡Qué gamesmanship!!!" "No English TV for USA-Mexico WCQ Aug 12? ESPN still doesn't own rights, price said to be "extortionate." May only be on Telemundo." And This is American Soccer posted the following: http://twitter.com/TIAS "Azteca tix update: nothing before end of GoldCup. Mex gives USSF tix, Ole Ole gets priority, than USSSC, where a lottery may need to be used"
Are there really that many people headed to Azteca / members of the USSC to warrant a lottery? They would have to have 10,000 requests
Also anyone have an idea as to what hotel the US will stay at? I'm so close to booking and very excited.
They usually stay at the Radisson. It's way outside the city center, just off the beltway. It's not a pedestrian friendly area.
ticketmaster in Mexico does online ticketing with the ability to print out tickets on your home printer....
I booked a flight for my wife and I, we'll be there. Just awaiting the ticket sale. Our buddy, Bryan from Sacramento is going, too. We met him and his wife in Germany '06. He just returned from USA-Brazil final in SA. I was at Azteca four years ago. The atmosphere was more intense than the Euro Final last year in Vienna. Just imagine Azteca swarming in green, roaring with every touch of the ball. Very intimidating to visiting teams. The seats for the US section was right up against the fence. You don't want to miss this match.
so i just read on ticketmaster.mx that tickets go on sale Monday http://www.ticketmaster.com.mx/Mexico-vs-Estados-Unidos-boletos/artist/840695
I hope they have that "US supporters" tab available when purchasing tickets. If not I will sit with the rest of the Mexican crowd. There is no way I'm missing out on this one.
Regardless of what section your ticket is in, you WILL be seated with the American supporters, for your own safety and enjoyment.

I'm not certain that's true... When I was in Azteca in 2005, there were Americans who bought tickets elsewhere in the stadium (likely through Ticketmaster) and sat amongst the El Tri fans. Apparently, they had a good time. No problems. YMMV, but I'm waiting for the US Soccer allocation to get my tickets.
This sounds bogus, a lottery that is. I don't want to be forced to pay $50 or whatever it is for the right to spend more money to buy tickets (or as US Soccer calls it - a Supporters Club). Anyone know if the remaining allocation will be offered to the general public? There is no way 10,000 US fans will be at Azteca midweek. Btw where did you get the 10,000 figure as the allocation from? Thanks.
10,000 Americans at Azteca would be fantastic. I've not yet been there, but I thought we're normally more like a few hundred. Maybe there's just so many Mexican supporters there that it swallows us up? I'm still on the fence about this trip. But if I do decide to go, a ticket will be way low on my list of concerns.
That is a number I came up with while simultaneously pondering and scratching my head.. In other words I'm calling Bull•hit on A lottery. Sorry bout the confusion
How many US fans were there in 2001? If memory serves we had about 150-200 in 2005? Can we better that this time around?
Worst case scenario... forced to scalp for tickets on gameday. People have plane flights months ago, should be no issue getting tickets. But who knows what US Soccer is up to.
I think we need some media help here. I know a lot people hate World Soccer Daily & Steven Cohen but I like the show, so I'll call in this week and try to pimp the trip. we could pick up some stragglers.
The consensus of our squad of 1st Minnesota Volunteers is to hold our horses and await word from USSF regarding tickets. This approach recommended by one of our experienced Azteca invaders (Thunderpac). Albeit, we as a whole are adventurous and not planning on lavish hotel accommodations or motorcoach to/from the Azteca.
