Re: Gooch a Galactico? http://goal.com/en-us/news/85/engla...madrid-consider-usas-oguchi-onyewu-as-back-up
Re: Gooch a Galactico? Seriously, it's not like Real Madrid has anyone better at that position. I don't really believe that they're looking at him, but if he was on their roster, he has enough quality to start for them. They really, really need a rock solid defender who will only defend, quickly pass the ball, and then stay close to his correct position while the team is on attack.
Re: Gooch a Galactico? Christoph Metzelder is his competition, German national teamer who barely saw any first team action until Pepe got himself suspended. Made the German EURO 2008 team though and played every single match. It might not actually be a bad thing riding the Real Madrid bench, especially when you practice with that much talent.
Re: Gooch a Galactico? Has Pepe made it clear that he's coming back after his meltdown? I thought that at one point he said he was done with the sport altogether.
Re: Gooch a Galactico? Pepe is still serving his 10 game ban isn't he? So if Gooch were to signhe could use those games to win a spot at the back. Metzelder is gone I believe so Pepe would be his only competition. So an injury somewhere and he gets a chance to play.
Re: Gooch a Galactico? Apparently the Madrid rumors were b.s. and he is going to have settle for a little club called AC Milan.
Re: Gooch a Galactico? Good move for AC milan in terms of getting americans to pay attention to them. I know I def like them a little more now. Hopefully he gets playing time and uses it to his advantage!
Re: Gooch a Galactico? These guys have got to find starting 11 spots, or there is little use in playing in Europe. Nothing replaces match experience.
Re: Gooch a Galactico? ....except being 3rd string at AC Milan where you can improve technically and tactically and step in whenever an old, injury prone Nesta is out. Yes, I wish he was still "getting playing time" in MLS
Re: Gooch a Galactico? this is what is on AC's web site A.C. MILAN OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT 7/7/2009 AC Milan announces to have signed defender OGUCHI ONYEWU, from Standard Liege, at the end of his contract. The player, who played the American national team, is also in possession of the Belgian passport and signed a contract which expires on June 30 2012. This operation proves once again the excellent friendship between our club and Standard Liege, and in particular, with vice president Luciano D'Onofrio.
I don't like this at all. I would much rather have seen Gooch go to a mid table team where he would have a better shot at starting. This seems to me like a roster building move by AC Milan and I'm afraid that Gooch will be riding the pine leading up to the World Cup next year. Improving in training sessions while you ride the pine is not NEARLY as productive as improving while starting for your team...obviously. I could be wrong and hope I am, but I have a BAD feeling about this...
He would have been a starter at Ajax, probably partnering Oleguer and allowing Vertonghen to push up into his natural position in the midfield. Bummer.
Congrats to Onyewu. Mian is a big successful club. But if he does not become a starter, Milan needs to loan him out so he can get minutes.
This is fantastic news for the USsoccer community. Finally, we have a player with a club who is a legit final 4 UCL contender year in and year out. The experience he will gain with the club will go lighyears in further tightening up our backline for SA2010. The cold, brutal truth remains however that he may not start. The good news is that Milan is no amateur club, and they know how to deal with their young talent. If they dont feel he has a chance to start, they will loan him out and he will (hopefully) get some meaningful minutes. all that said, congrats GOOCH!!! lighting the way for the future of the USSF
